1) Housing is a fundamental human right, but over 1 billion people live in inadequate housing such as slums or as homeless. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this global housing crisis by making adequate housing essential for public health. 2) People living in inadequate housing like slums have been hit hardest by the pandemic due to crowded conditions and lack of basic services, facing increased health and safety risks. While governments have provided some temporary protections, long-term policy changes are needed. 3) World Habitat Day 2020 provides an opportunity to discuss transforming housing policy to build back societies better after COVID-19.
