The document discusses using social networking tools like MySpace, Facebook, Flickr, and Ning to promote a library's services and events. The author took a course that taught them how easy and fun these tools are to use, and how they can reach more people than through traditional outreach. The author plans to create a MySpace page for their library and add a Flickr account to showcase events and activities. They will present to the library's Board of Trustees on using these tools to engage more people in the library's services.
4. I would love to use social
networking as an outreach
tool in my library! This is
where our teens, tweens, and
most adults are at every day.
Where else could you go to
reach so many people at one
time?!
5.
6. Using MySpace or Facebook
would show a different face
of the library. We could let
people know how cool we
are! We aren’t here to give
you dirty looks and shush
you!
7.
8. We are trying to stay current on
technology so that we can help people
out. We want to do all that we can to
get you the information and
entertainment that you want and need.
The library is the greatest place to get
the most information in one stop!
9.
10. I would like to create a
MySpace page for my library.
I envision connecting with
many people that would not
normally walk through the
library doors.
11.
12. I could add a blog section to discuss
events and happenings at the library.
It would be great to have people
comment on events that they attended.
Not only would this attract new
people, but it would give us some
feedback as to how our patrons feel
about the services that we are
providing.
13.
14. Adding a link to a Flickr account
would be a great tool as well. We
could show off all of the fun stuff that
we do. We could tag people and
places, which would get us exposure
that we never could have dreamed up!
15.
16. Taking this course has taught me so
much! This has stretched my horizons
and opened my eyes to new ways of
thinking about using a computer. Each
assignment has been a step out of my
comfort zone. I never would have
tried these technologies without being
forced to do so.
17.
18. First of all, this course has taught me
how easy all of this truly is. I was
intimidated in the beginning, but then I
realized that none of these tools is very
difficult to use. Actually, everything
was fun, maybe even addicting!
19.
20. Second, I realize how many
people can be reached. With
tagging and adding friends
and all, I have met people that
otherwise I would have never
known. How great is that!?!
21. You can reach more people
through these tools than you
22. ever could from an outreach
trip. All of these people and
you don’t even have to leave
the building!
23.
24. I will continue to use the technologies
that I have tried, both personally and
professionally. I plan to put together a
presentation on several of these tools
to share with my library’s Board of
Trustees.
25.
26. Our Board seems to be against using
many of these tools. I feel that I now
have enough knowledge to open their
eyes to the positives of using them. So
many people can be reached, so much
that we can learn, all from our
computers!
