The human body is 70% water and plants cannot survive without it. Water is essential for life and is contained in many foods. However, water pollution from sewage, industries, ships, litter, and acid rain is increasingly threatening water sources like lakes and rivers. Various types of water pollution include nutrients, surface, groundwater, chemical, and oil pollution. Industries release harmful pollutants like asbestos, lead, mercury, oils, and petrochemicals into water. Acid rain is also very damaging to marine life and plants. If not addressed, water pollution can reduce fresh water and cause death, disease, and disruption of food chains.
