Was and Were
Using ‘Was’ and ‘Were’
It is important to be careful when choosing the correct
form of the verb for the subject of a sentence.
Was and were are both past tenses of the verb to be. The
verb be is a tricky one because it is an irregular verb and
one that we find ourselves using with great frequency, so
it is that much more important that we choose the
correct verb for our sentences.
The verb be in past
We use Was / Were to talk about

 Mood
How do we make sentences?
 Affirmative
 Negative
 Interrogative
Affirmative
 I was very happy.
 Subject + was + complement.
 They were very happy.
 Subject + were + complement.
Negative
 I was not in Bhavnagar.
 Subject + was + not + complement.
 They were not in Bhavnagar.
 Subject + were + not + complement.
Interrogative
 Was she scared?
 Was + subject + complement + ?.
 Were they scared?
 Were + subject + complement + ?.

  • 2. Using ‘Was’ and ‘Were’ It is important to be careful when choosing the correct form of the verb for the subject of a sentence. Was and were are both past tenses of the verb to be. The verb be is a tricky one because it is an irregular verb and one that we find ourselves using with great frequency, so it is that much more important that we choose the correct verb for our sentences.
