2. Kuntaka
कु न्तक was a Kashmiri
Sanskrit poetician and
literary theorist who is
remembered for his work
Vakroktijivitam in which
he postulates the Vakrokti
Siddhanta or theory of Oblique
Expression, which he considers as the
hallmark of all creative literature.

He lived roughly 950–1050,between
Anandavardhana in the ninth century and
Abhinavagupta in the tenth century and
was a rough contemporary of Dhananjaya
and Rajasekhara.
Vakrokti for Kuntaka is synonym for the
principle of beauty underlying all kinds of
poetic language.
4. Continue…
Vakrokti consists of two components
1) VAKRA 2) UKTI
VAKRA crooked indirect unique.
UKTI:-poetic expression or speech.
5. Theory of VAKROKTI
The origin of VAKROKTI could be found in
Bhamaha’s “KAVYALANKARA” and Dandin’s
“KAVYADARSHANAM”.
In this theory Kuntaka wants to convey that a
certain strikingness of expression is essence
of poetry.
Kuntaka belives that the beautiful and
miraculous in the poetry is the consequence
of vakrokti.

According to Kuntaka:-
“VAKROKTI is the source of beauty in
kavya which is quit opposite to the
description of a thing as it is.”
According to Bhamah:-
“VAKROKTI as a made of exprression
because it is the fundamental principle of
figurative expression.”
7. Kuntaka’s concept of Vakrokti
Vakrokti is a mode of expression in poetry,
which underlies and forms of all poetic
figures.Therefore,Dandian uses the term
vakrokti as a almost co-extensive with the
generic term “Alamkara”.
Vakrokti is a felt of skill going beyond the
theory of Anandvardhan’s
“Dhvani”because kuntaka feels that poetic
meaning had not been properly classisied
in the Dhvani theory.
8. Types of Vakrokti
The phonetic level, [varṇavinyasa]
The lexical level [pada purvarddha]
The grammatical level [pada pararddha]
The sentential level [vakya]
The contextual level [prakaraṇa]
The compositional level [prabandha]
9. Example
“Mudrarakshasa”
• Parvati :- Who is this blesses damsel on your crest ?
Shiva :- Shashikala ( Crescent of moon or lady's name )
Parvati :- Ohh !!!!! is that the name of the lady ???
Shiva :- surely !!! How is it you have forgotten her
name?
Parvati :- My query is about the lady and not the moon.
Shiva :- Let then Vijaya , the lady in attendance reply and
not the moon.
10. conclusion
According to Kuntaka,Vakrokti alone dose
not make poetry. It must delight the mind
of the reader who is responsive to the true
beauty of poetry. Thus the test of vakrokti
is the contribution to chamatkara,the
aesthetic enjoyment experienced from
composition.
