1) Uniformitarianism - geological processes occurred the same way in the past as today, like how cakes are made the same way each time.
2) Superposition - the oldest sedimentary layers are on the bottom, like how cake layers are placed with the bottom being oldest.
3) Original Horizontality - sedimentary rocks form in horizontal layers, similar to cake layers being placed horizontally.
4) Catastrophism - geological change can occur suddenly, akin to a dropped cake being ruined suddenly.

Years measure the 365.2422 days it takes Earth to orbit the sun, requiring a leap year every four years, except for centennial years which must be divisible by 400 to be a leap year.
