2. "MUSIC VIDEOS DEMONSTRATE GENRE CHARACTERISTICS (E.G. STAGE PERFORMANCE IN METAL
VIDEO, DANCE ROUTINE FOR BOY/GIRL BAND, ASPIRATION IN HIP HOP)."
• Goodwin's theory suggests that specific genres have characteristics that define them.
Walk this way is a hard rock song.
• A key convention of rock/metal videos is a form of stage performance in the music
video. This is illustrated in the 'walk this way' video, when the band are performing
live in front of an audience in the video. Also, the costumes of the people involved in
the music video are important, as Aerosmith are known for hard rock, glam rock and
funk rock, Steven Tyler, the lead singer of Aerosmith is shown wearing brightly
coloured robe looking clothing to show this, thus reflecting of the bands usual genre
of their music. However, as Run-DMC are more of a hip hop type artist and so are
depicted wearing more darker items of clothing and trainers, with accessories such
as gold chains and such. This shows a fine contrast between the two artists, and the
genres of music that they are both associated with. also, the hip hop group are
shown to be using equipment such as records and record decks, whereas Aerosmith
are shown to use equipment such as guitars, keyboards and microphones.
3. "THERE IS A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LYRICS AND VISUALS. THE LYRICS ARE REPRESENTED WITH
LYRICS."
• The music video to the most extent contradicts this part of the theory, there
are very little if any links between the lyrics and what is happening on the
screen. I was able to pick out one very subtle and small example of something
that happens where the singer says 'walk this way' and two members of the
Run-DMC group are shown walking towards the singer, apart from that, I was
unable to find any other links between the lyrics, and what is happening on
the screen.
4. "THERE IS A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE MUSIC AND VISUALS. THE TONE AND ATMOSPHERE OF
THE VISUAL REFLECTS THAT OF THE MUSIC."
• This is shown throughout the section of the music video where the band
are performing in front of a live audience, the lights that are being used
are flashing to the beat of the song, and when the song gets the the
chorus, the lights brighten, as the chorus is a louder section of the song.
• This is also shown throughout the certain instruments that are being
played and such. For example at the beginning, a guitar riff is played by the
lead guitarist, when this is heard, the video shows the guitar player, playing
the guitar. this is also used when at the beginning, a record is scratched to
repeat a short part of the song, when this is played, a member of Run-
DMC is shown scratching a record on a turntable.
• Therefore, this convention is illustrated throughout the song, and is used
on several occasions.
5. "THE DEMANDS OF THE RECORD LABEL WILL INCLUDE THE NEED FOR LOTS OF CLOSE UPS OF THE
ARTIST AND THE ARTIST MAY DEVELOP MOTIFS WHICH RECUR ACROSS THEIR WORK."
• Throughout the entire music video, many close ups and even extreme close ups of
the artists are shown. Many close ups of Steven Tyler's face and clothing are shown
throughout the video. Steven Tyler's clothing is a large part of his image as he wears
almost always the same style of clothing through all his performances and this has
grown to be a defining factor of him and the Aerosmith band image. Also, a very
important part of the image of Steven Tyler is having a scarf or other piece of long
material, hanging on the microphone stand, this is perhaps the largest contribution
to creating an image for Steven Tyler, and ultimately Aerosmith as a band.
• This is also applied to the members of Run-DMC, many close up of their trainers are
shown and also their hats, as these two pieces of clothing, have become a large part
of the Run-DMC image, not to mention the large gold chains around their necks.
These clothing and accessories and become a defining part of this band/group's
image and they are recognised by these things. There is also a part in the music
video, where a large sign is on the wall reading 'RUN DMC' which links to the demand
of the record label, as this is almost advertising the band.
6. "THERE IS FREQUENTLY REFERENCE TO NOTION OF LOOKING (SCREENS WITHIN SCREENS,
MIRRORS, STAGES, ETC) AND PARTICULARLY VOYEURISTIC TREATMENT OF THE FEMALE BODY."
• Through the music video, there are no parts where there are mirros and/or
screens within screens that I could pick out or find. However, for the most
part, the music video does take part on a stage at what looks like a concert in
front of a live audience.
• There is also nothing relating to 'voyeuristic treatment of the female body'
that I could pick out or find. although there are many females in the video
during the depiction of the live concert, there was no treatment of their
bodies which I found to be 'voyeuristic'.
