Decimal Math Vocabulary 
Place Value: The multiple of ten telling how 
much a digit represents. 
Example: in 374, the 7 is in the tens place. 
Decimal: A number that can represent a whole 
number and numbers between whole numbers. 
Example: 4.5 is between 4.0 and 5.0 
Tenths: The first decimal place to the right of 
the decimal point; 1 of 10 equal 
parts. Example: .7
Hundredths: The second decimal place to the right 
of the decimal point; 1 of 100 equal 
parts. Example: .8 7 
Thousandths: The third decimal place to the right of 
the decimal point; 1 of 100 equal 
parts. Example: .6 4 3 
Decimal Point: A period separating the ones and 
tenths in a decimal number. 
Example: 7.4 
Whole Numbers: The set of all counting numbers 
and 0. Example: 296
Rounding: Is a method of finding an estimate that’s the closest to a 
given place value. 
Example: 1.37 Rounded to the nearest tenths place would 
equal 1.4 
Estimation: An approximation for the result of a calculation. 
Comparing: Less Than, Greater Than, or Equal. 
Example: 4.256 ‹ 4.276 
Ordering: Ranking numbers from least to greatest or greatest to 
least. 
Example: 1.2; 4.3; 3.1, 1.6 Answer: 1.2; 1.6, 3.1, 4.3 
Scientific Notation: Writing a number as the product of a number 
greater than or equal to 1 but less than 10 and a power of 10. 
Example: 350 = 3.5 x 10^2
