Vitamin D refers to a group of fat-soluble compounds responsible for enhancing absorption of calcium and other minerals. The most important forms are vitamin D3, which is synthesized in skin exposed to sunlight, and vitamin D2, which can be obtained through diet and supplements. Insufficient vitamin D levels are defined as 50-100 nmol/L, while severe deficiency is less than 12.5 nmol/L.
