LIST OF CONTENTS
oVitamin k was discovered by Danish scientist
HENDRICK DAM.
o Vitamin k is a fat soluble vitamin.
oIt has specific coenzyme function.
INTRODUCTION
PHYLLOQUINONE
VITAMIN K1 Present in plants
VITAMIN K2
MENAQUINONE
Produced by the
intestinal bacteria
VITAMIN K3
MENADIONE
Synthetic product
TYPES
FUNCTIONS
oPhylloquinone , major form of vitamin K in
diet, is absorbed in jejunum.
oThe process is depend on the normal flow of
bile salts and pancreatic juices.
oIt metabolized rapidly
oIt stored in liver
ABSORPTION
◦Some product are not excreted in urine.
◦Large quantities are present in faeces.
◦In humans, 20% of phylloquinone excreted in urine
and 40% to 50% are excreted in faeces.
EXCRETION
SOURCES
◦ Infant – 2-2.5 mcg/day
◦ Children – 30-60 mcg/day
◦ Adults – 90-120 mcg/day
◦ Pregnant or Lactating women – 90-120 mcg/day
