What is Vitamin D test?
● Vitamin D is a nutrient which is important for healthy bones and
teeth. It has two forms
○ Vitamin D2 - which we get from fortified foods like milk and dairy
products
○ Vitamin D3 - is made by our body when exposed to sun
● Both the forms get converted to 25 hydroxyvitamin D also
known as 25(OH)D
● Vitamin D test measures the level of 25(OH)D in the blood
Why is Vitamin D test done?
Vitamin D test is done in patients who have
● Symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency like
○ Bone weakness
○ Bone softness in children
○ Fractures
● Osteoporosis
● Obesity
● Lack of exposure to sunlight
● Difficulty in fat absorption, such as cystic fibrosis and Crohn’s
disease and in patients who have undergone gastric bypass surgery
How is Vitamin D test done?
● Vitamin D test is done on a
blood sample
● A syringe attached to a fine
needle is used to withdraw
blood from a vein of your arm
What Results of Vitamin D mean?
● Low levels of vitamin D indicates vitamin D deficiency which
can be due to
○ Less sun exposure
○ Dietary deficiency or
○ Decreased absorption from the intestine
● High vitamin D level indicates vitamin D intoxication and is
usually due to intake of high dose of vitamin D
Measuring the levels of Vitamin D helps
● To know if any Vitamin D supplements are needed
● To know if there is a need to expose oneself to the sun
● To monitor the efficacy of treatment in patients receiving Vitamin D,
calcium, phosphorus, or magnesium supplements
