Introduction
Virtual reality is a form of technology that creates computer
generated worlds or imaginary environment which people can
explore and interact with. Also can be defined as artificial
environment created with computer hardware and software and
presented to the user in such a way that it appears and feels like a
real environment.

How It Works
Virtual reality environments are primarily visual experiences.
User can interact either through standard input devices such as:
mouse, key-board or through multi-modal devices like: head-
gear or hand-gloves

Applications

Advantages
• Many different fields can use VR as a way to train students
without actually putting anyone in harm’s way.
• VR also helps those that can’t get out of the house experience
a much fuller life by creating Virtual World.
• VR also helps patients recover from stroke, phobias and other
injuries.

Disadvantages
• The total cost of the machinery to create a VR system is too
high.
• Still in Under Development.
• VR is becoming much more common place but programmers are
still grappling with how to interact with virtual environments.

Virtual Reality in Manufacturing

General Overview
In this 21st
century which is also know the century of speed.
Mega manufacturers nowadays are competing to improve their
services in fulfilling the markets demand globally. Virtual
reality is a fast growing manufacturing application that has
multiple advantages into pushing the advancement of
manufacturing technology to a different level.

Why apply in Manufacturing?
• to assist in minimizing human errors
• shortening the research and development period
• reduce the expenditures
• and improve the designs reliability

CAD to Virtual Reality
It is hard to decide which software to implement when
designing for the purpose of applying virtual reality.
Adapting the designing software and translate it to a
language understood by the virtual reality hardware is
the main consideration.

Language Translation Methods
Basically, there are two ways of translating the
design. Firstly, known as the direct translation which
is directly translating the design from CAD to VR.
And secondly, intermediate translation which is by
using the aid of another software to translate CAD’s
design into VR reality.

Why CAD
• CAD is widely used to perform this task is because the price
of the software is more reasonable compared to other
designing softwares.
• Other than that, it is one of the oldest designing software,
hence, many expert designers that are capable of preparing
complex software is familiar with it.
• Furthermore, this tool is easy to use, and has the flexibility in
performing complex designs.
• And also, most education sectors provide the service in
teaching design using CAD software.

The Application
One of the top German car manufacturing companies
(Volkswagen) has applied this function, the purpose
was to implement new method for improving and
accelerating the development process in vehicle styling
and design. Three main steps were used to generate the
complete virtual reality design.

How the System is Built..
Three main steps were used to generate the complete
virtual reality design. Firstly, creating the design using
AutoCAD.

Secondly, preparing the model, this step requires to
change the design into meshes, the more meshes
created the more detailed the design can be, and then
the designer should work on eliminating the meshes
and obtain a clean clear design

Thirdly, colours should be added to the design
to vivifies the product and make it look real.

Augmented Reality!
Refers to a system in which the user views and acts
within an enhanced version of the real world. The
enhancements are virtual (computer- generated), and
can include objects or information.

wearable computer with
an optical head
mounted display
(OHMD). It was
developed by Google.
 Using Augmented
Reality Technology.

Advantages of AR

 Military Trainings which could be less expensive
 Rapid augmentation in tourism.
 Effective in Medical Field.
 Easy to locate desired places.
 A Good way of teaching.
 Increased the learning abilities.

Disadvantages of AR
o Three dimensional, real-time running augmented
reality programs like "first person shooters" have
been believed to increase teen aggression because
they normalize violence.
o The lack of privacy.
o Difficult to maintain Augmented Reality Systems.
o Augmented reality is leading to an era of no privacy,
where criminals could simply point their phone at
victims and learn anything they need to know about
them.

The Future of Virtual Reality
• Virtual Reality is a growing industry.
• PC and specialized hardware are getting better, faster and
cheaper because of development in VR.
• Maybe 3D user interfaces will replace the windows based
ones?
• Huge demand for VRML programmers in near future.
• Revolution in gaming industries.

Conclusion
• With the help of virtual reality delicate operation had been
carried out in the field of medicine. Military have been able to
train in a way that physically it would not have been possible
without the help of virtual reality. In manufacturing right from
design and development virtual reality had help to come out
with complex. Not only that maintenance had made simple
because of virtual reality. In film industry most of the effect
that we watch thinking is real they are just effect of virtual
reality. Therefore VR has greatly enhances the design,
product, delivery, storage. VR is virtually utilized in all works
of life. But it does not mean that VR has no disadvantages.

Some aspects, such as the technology that is used, pose
significant problems to developers and cause restrictions in
attempts at widespread use and distribution.
The Cost: This new technology is expensive. The cost of
developing hardware and software for the application of virtual
reality technology is too great for many institutions to
implement at this time. Computer instrumentation is expensive
after introduction but has always decreased over time; so I
suspect as this occurs virtual reality will eventually become
more commonplace in Medicine.

The Restraint: Presently the equipment used to create a virtual
environment is restrictive and uncomfortable to its users. This would
have to be overcome for more convenient uses in surgical procedures.
