Virovir (Generic Famciclovir Tablets) is used for the
treatment of recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores) and for
the treatment of recurrent episodes of genital herpes as
well as for chronic suppressive therapy of recurrent
episodes of genital herpes in immunocompetent adult
patients.
In HIV-infected adult patients, this medicine is used to treat
recurrent episodes of orolabial or genital herpes in HIV-
infected adults.

Virovir Tablets are manufactured by FDC Limited, India in the
strengths of 250 mg and 500 mg.

Chemical Structure

The active ingredient contained in Virovir tablets is
Famciclovir.
Each film coated Virovir tablet contains 250 mg or 500
mg of Famciclovir.

Uses of Virovir 250 mg and 500 mg Tablets:
Virovir (Generic Famciclovir Tablets) is used to treat infections
caused by certain types of viruses. It treats shingles caused by
herpes zoster, a herpes virus infection of the skin. It also treats
outbreaks of herpes simplex that cause cold sores around the
mouth, sores around the anus, and genital herpes. In people
with frequent outbreaks of genital herpes, Famciclovir is used
to help reduce the number of future episodes. This medicine is
also used to treat recurrent herpes virus infections of the
mucous membranes (lips and mouth) and genitals in HIV-
infected patients.

Uses of Virovir 250 mg and 500 mg Tablets:
Famciclovir is an antiviral drug. However, it is not a cure for these
infections. The viruses that cause these infections continue to live
in the body even between outbreaks. Famciclovir decreases the
severity and length of these outbreaks. It helps the sores heal
faster, keeps new sores from forming, and decreases pain/itching.
This medication may also help reduce how long pain remains
after the sores heal. In addition, in people with a weakened
immune system, Famciclovir can decrease the risk of the virus
spreading to other parts of the body and causing serious
infections.

Recommended Adult Dosage
The recommended dose of Virovir Tablets (Generic Famciclovir
Tablets) to treat immunocompetent adult patients for various
indications is given below:
Herpes Labialis (Cold Sores): The recommended dosage of Famciclovir
tablets for the treatment of recurrent herpes labialis is 1500 mg as a
single dose. Therapy should be started at the first sign or symptom of
herpes labialis (e.g., tingling, itching, burning, pain, or lesion).
Genital Herpes Recurrent Episodes: The recommended dosage of
Famciclovir tablets for the treatment of recurrent episodes of genital
herpes is 1000 mg twice daily for 1 day. Therapy should be initiated at
the first sign or symptom of a recurrent episode (e.g., tingling, itching,
burning, pain, or lesion).

Recommended Adult Dosage
Genital Herpes Suppressive Therapy: The recommended
dosage of Virovir tablets for chronic suppressive therapy
of recurrent episodes of genital herpes is 250 mg twice
daily.
Herpes Zoster (Shingles): The recommended dosage of
Famciclovir tablets (Virovir) for the treatment of herpes
zoster is 500 mg every 8 hours for 7 days. Therapy should
be started as soon as herpes zoster is diagnosed.

Recommended Dosage in HIV-Infected Adult Patients
Recurrent Orolabial or Genital Herpes: The recommended
dosage of Famciclovir tablets for the treatment of recurrent
orolabial or genital herpes in HIV-infected patients is 500 mg
twice daily for 7 days. Therapy should be initiated at the first
sign or symptom of a recurrent episode (e.g., tingling, itching,
burning, pain, or lesion).

Contraindications

Virovir is contraindicated in
patients with a known
hypersensitivity to Famciclovir,
Penciclovir, or any component
of the tablet.

Storage Instructions
Virovir Tablets (Generic Famciclovir Tablets) have to
be stored at controlled room temperature i.e. from
20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) with excursions permitted
between 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F).
Keep this as well as all other medicines away from
children and pets.

Warnings
Acute renal failure: Cases of acute renal failure have been reported in
patients with underlying renal disease who have received
inappropriately high doses of Famciclovir (Virovir tablets) for their level
of renal function.
Dosage reduction is recommended when administering Famciclovir to
patients with renal impairment.

Warnings
In patients with impaired renal function dose adjustment is necessary.
Famciclovir has not been studied in patients with severe hepatic
impairment. Conversion of Famciclovir to its active metabolite
Penciclovir may be impaired in these patients resulting in lower
Penciclovir plasma concentrations, and thus a decrease of efficacy of
Famciclovir may occur.
Clinical response should be closely monitored, particularly in
immunocompromised patients. Consideration should be given to
intravenous antiviral therapy when response to oral therapy is
considered insufficient.

Warnings
Patients should be advised to avoid intercourse when symptoms are
present even if treatment with an antiviral has been initiated.
During suppressive treatment with antiviral agents, the frequency of
viral shedding is significantly reduced.
However, transmission is still possible. Therefore, in addition to therapy
with Famciclovir (Virovir tablets), it is recommended that patients use
safer sex practices.

Possible Side Effects
Most common Famciclovir (Virovir tablets) side effects with an
incidence rate of greater than 10% of adult patients are headache
and nausea.

Possible Side Effects
The following side effects have been reported during postapproval use of
Famciclovir:
Blood and lymphatic system disorders: Thrombocytopenia
Hepatobiliary disorders: Abnormal liver function tests, cholestatic jaundice
Immune system disorders: Anaphylactic shock, anaphylactic reaction
Nervous system disorders: Dizziness, somnolence, seizure
Psychiatric disorders: Confusion (including delirium, disorientation, and confusional
state occurring predominantly in the elderly), hallucinations
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Urticaria, erythema multiforme, Stevens-
Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, angioedema (e.g., face, eyelid,
periorbital, and pharyngeal edema), hypersensitivity vasculitis
Cardiac disorders: Palpitations

Virovir Tablets Overdosage
Overdose experience with Famciclovir (Virovir tablets) is limited. In the
event of an overdose supportive and symptomatic therapy should be
given as appropriate.
Acute renal failure has been reported rarely in patients with underlying
renal disease where the Famciclovir dose has not been appropriately
reduced for the level of renal function.
Penciclovir is removed by hemodialysis.
Plasma concentrations are reduced by approximately 75% following 4h
haemodialysis.

Virovir Tablets During Pregnancy
Famciclovir (Virovir tablets) has been classified by the US FDA as
Pregnancy Category B.
After oral administration, Famciclovir (prodrug) is converted to
Penciclovir (active drug). There are no adequate and well-controlled
studies of Famciclovir or Penciclovir use in pregnant women.
No adverse effects on embryofetal development were observed in
animal reproduction studies using Famciclovir and Penciclovir at doses
higher than the maximum recommended human dose (MRHD) and
human exposure.
Since animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human
response, Famciclovir (Virovir tablets) should be used during
pregnancy only if needed.
