Value at Risk (VaR) plays a central role in risk management. By definition, VaR is the maximum
expected loss of a portfolio over a given time horizon with a certain confidence level. VaR can be seen
as a quantile on the lower tail of the distribution of portfolio returns. Although VaR is a simple
measure, it is not easily estimated.
There are several approaches for the estimation of VaR, such as historical simulations, the variance
covariance, and the Monte Carlo approaches. The first approach does not assume any underlying
distribution, whereas the last two approaches demand the joint distribution to be known, which
frequently assumed to be normal distribution. However, the deviation from normality could lead to an
inadequate VaR estimate. In this case, the portfolio could be either riskier than desired or

I am writing this journal with the goal of recounting my travels to different philosophical societies.
Remarkably, each one of the three societies I was privileged enough to travel to r igidly followed a
renowned philosophy. These were the philosophies of Plato, Soren Kierkegaard, and Friedrich
Nietzsche.
The Republic
The first society I visited was that of Plato
s philosophy. The residents were very kind and sought out true meanings of different vi rtues solely by
dialectic. They structured their city much the same way that
Plato structured the renowned

. Plato said that a just city would involve each man doing his own work, or specializing in a certain
task. The cobbler would be a cobbler, the builder would be a builder, the farmer a farmer, and so on an
d so forth. Each of these focused on his work and in such a way maximized outpu t, as is logical. The
army protecting that city stood as a c ourageous wall around it, ready to defend it whenever necessary.

Reaction time is the time between the presentation of a stimulus and the initiation of the muscular

happens to reaction times as different independent variables are applied. The nervous system helps all
parts of the body to communicate with each other, it is responsible for making sure all of the body s

nerves in the body part of the peripheral nervous system. Inside nerves lie neurons, neurons are found

Who Is Truly Evil In Lord Of The Flies
For centuries, philosophers have debated the question of whether man is truly evil. William Golding
strikes this question in his highly realistic novel, Lord of The Flies. The story is set in a tropical island
during World War 2 when a plane is shot down holding British schoolboys. No adults survive and they
are left to govern themselves until they are rescued. Through Jack, Golding demonstrates what will
happen to man when law and order are taken away, and that ultimately man will choose safe gray over

powerful black leader, narrates his story on how books transformed his life forever into the realm of

attaining literacy and how this process influences him to espouse black separatism and resent white
people, while providing historical fact and jarring criticism in his arguments. Using first person

protagonist Sarah in this coming of age film. The story follows Sarah on her quest to find her younger

Throughout the first act of the film, just by being introduced to Sarah s family the audience can see
that Sarah is a stubborn and selfish character. However, as Sarah is first implied as being elaborate and
mean we also see Sarah s considerate side come out as she begs the Goblin King to give Toby back to
her.
The first character from the labyrinth Sarah is introduced to is the Goblin King Jareth himself, who is
the antagonist in the film. Jareth takes Toby as he believes this is what Sarah wants.
Throughout the film we see that Sarah is drawn to the character of Jareth, however she also shows
annoyance towards the character. We see she initially has an connection to Jareth at the start of the
film as she s reading the book. Jareth gives Sarah the opportunity to grow courage and heroic
characteristics throughout the film. He does this by taunting her. We see that Sarah s character develop
as she gains courage and becomes heroic in the last act when she defeated Jareth. Jareth says at the
beginning of the second act when they are both outside the labyrinth Go back to your room, play with
your toys. When Jareth says this, it suggests Sarah is childish. However this can also be perceived as
Jareth taunting Sarah into taking up his challenge of the labyrinth. We then see Sarah pluck up the
courage to follow out this challenge.
