Mahatma Gandhi Said...

“If Village India perishes,
 India will perish.”
APNO
Ø APNO is the social work arm of Malikar, a
  known management consulting company
working with some of the leading and
  successful organizations in the country.

Ø APNO is committed to strengthening the
  small, not-for-profit enterprises and
initiatives in India, so that they realize their
  optimum potential.
The Cause - I
Ø Of India's population 35-40 percent currently live
in cities. This proportion is expected to increase to
  about 60 percent by 2025 (Brockerhoff, 2000).

Ø The creation of employment has not kept pace
with the growth of urban populations. As a
consequence, the traditional pattern of poverty
incidence is rapidly shifting from rural to urban
  areas.
The Cause - II
Ø Demographic and economic expansion of
cities, through processes such as migration
 and industrialization, tend to be
 accompanied by spatial expansion, resulting
in encroachments by cities upon adjacent
peri-urban areas. At the same time, areas
that were earlier distant from the city and
rural in character subsequently start falling
within the cities' reach or "band of
 influence".
Effect - I
Ø Characteristic of peri-urban areas is the
concentration of poor people, consisting of inner-
city as well as rural migrants and/or marginal local
  farmers.

Ø Natural resources are under increased pressure in
the peri-urban areas because of the use of land
for, inter alia, clay pits, quarries, sewage disposal
tanks and garbage dumps, and as a result of air
and water pollution from local industrial and
urban sources (Druijven and Singh, 1994).
Effect - II
Ø Urbanization and industrialization affect
agriculture in the peri-urban areas, as population
pressure from the city results in changes in land
use - from agricultural to urban land use, be it for
housing, commercial, industrial or other purposes.

Ø The livelihoods of the poorest inhabitants of the
rural-urban fringes in cities are adversely affected
by problems of land and water degradation
Impact
Ø Nutritional deficits in macro-nutrients and
    essential micro-nutrients particularly in children
    and women
Ø Unhygienic (disease inviting) living conditions
    and surroundings
Ø Education considered a non-priority expenditure
Ø Child labour is rampant
Ø The young are reluctant to join family trade. But
are not qualified/trained to pursue other vocational
    options outside the village
Ø Substance and alcohol abuse on the rise
Need
Qualitatively the following areas need URGENT attention:

Ø Health and Hygiene

Ø Education completion

Ø Employability spectrum

Ø Opportunity generation
Village Welfare Programme
Ø APNO directs it’s expertise to organize and
manage ‘Spear Head Groups’ (SHG) in
villages. SHG in turn galvanize the target
  audience into adopting beneficial habits,
  practices and outlook.

Ø SHG work closely with APNO team in
  understanding problems, designing
  solutions and effectiveness monitoring.
Walk With Us
Ø The task is humungous, resources (financial and
  human) inadequate. Therefore external assistance
is always needed and much appreciated.

Ø The best way to support us is by making financial
contributions. It can be in the form of a single
  donation or a recurring one.

Ø Please call us for more information.
Every Indian Matters!
