He became very good at it that even red coloured cows looked perfectly natural and acceptable. He had a tragic life with all his talent he managed only to sell only one of his painting. His story is also the story of two brothers, their love for each others and their sympathy to others. This seems to be a contradiction with Vincent self-portrait glazes.

Impressionism was an artistic movement that developed in France in the late 19th century. Artists such as Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, and Degas broke from traditional techniques to focus on capturing the effects of light and color through loose brushwork. Monet's painting Impression, Sunrise gave the movement its name. Key characteristics included painting outdoors and using dabs of color and optical mixing on the canvas. Post-Impressionism emerged later in the century as artists sought to combine Impressionism's techniques with more traditional composition and design.

Realism in France occurred around the same
time as the Revolution 0f 1848, largely due to
Courbet. This style champions socialism, which
challenges authority and privilege of the rich.
Courbet has painted an image of a funeral, a scene
of commoners carrying out a simple social ritual.
Devoid of political or philosophical agendas, Realism
can literally be described as real: simple, everyday
scenes and events.

Millet creates a scene of gleaners, who were
beggars of the time. These three women are
picking the leftovers of grain in a field after the
major harvesting (you can see the large harvest in
the wagon). At the time of its exhibition in Paris,
the people were scared of this scene. It reveals at
what cost society has to pay for such wealth for an
upper class.

Manet’s painting is considered to be the one that
turned the Parisian art world on its head, and
propelled the world into the Modern Art Era. It
might not look like much, but this image is actually
ridiculing what the traditionalists viewed as
appropriate subject matter. This is a contemporary
scene, with Parisians having lunch in a park with a
naked woman. Another woman wearing a Roman
toga plays in the water. It is obvious that this scene
would never really happen in real life, and that’s the
message Manet was after. He also painted it with
bold, thick strokes of color.

Degas developed a painterly approach to his
everyday scenes as Manet had. His compositions
appear off-centered, and elements are cut-off on
the edges, much like a photograph would crop a
scene. This is unusual in painting at the time, and
creates a image of spontaneity, as a snap-shot does.

2. Vincent’s father was a
reverend. A year before his
birth date, Vincent’s mother
gave birth to a stillborn with the
same name.
Vincent received a fragmented
education, was an art dealer,
an assistant teacher and then a
lay minister.
Vincent experienced
depression, mild epilepsy,
seizures and hallucinations. He
had a devotion to Theo and
religion, and was passionate
about nature and painting.
March 30,1853 –

Vincent Wilhelm van Gogh
was a Dutch,
Post-Impressionist painter
4. Theodorus “Theo” van Gogh
May 1, 1857 – January 25, 1891
He was a lifelong devoted brother,
friend, patron, and artistic agent for
Vincent.
Johanna “Jo” van Gogh-Bonger
October 4, 1862 – September 2, 1925
After Theo’s death, she took the
collection of Vincent’s art work to Holland
and dedicated herself to getting Vincent
the recognition he deserved, promoting
him to fame.
14. The Peasants
In November 1882, Vincent began
drawings of individuals to depict a
range of character types from the
working class. He aimed to be a
"peasant painter”.
He was in the fields enduring the
weather for long hours. He was so
engaged in living the peasant lifestyle,
his appearance and manner of speech
began to separate himself from
others. This was the cost he believed
was needed for his artistic
development.
18. Learning From Artists
Charles Bargue, a French artist, wrote two
books on drawing that were a significant
source of study for Van Gogh.
Vincent, like Jean-Francois Millet, viewed
farmers and laborers as truly noble people.
Vincent began doing studies after Millet
works as early as 1880. These early studies
helped him to learn the disciplines necessary
to paint.

38. Impressionism, the spontaneous,
naturalistic and transient rendering of light
and color and realism in art work.
Post-Impressionism, favored an
emphasis on a more subjective approach to
painting, as artists opted to evoke emotion
and symbolic content.
39. Still Life with Fruitilaros

“I often think that the night is more alive and

50. Impasto An Italian word for
“paste” or “mixture”.
Impasto is used to
describe a painting
technique where paint
(usually oil) is laid on
so thickly that the
texture of brush
strokes or palette knife
are clearly visible,
adding dimension and
emphasis.

67. Paul Gauguin
The colorful works
of Gauguin inspired
Vincent to use more
colors for his
paintings.

Vincent to jute

of paint and heavier
brush strokes.
Vincent also began
to use Gauguin’s
