2. VERB PHRASE
– Verb – conveys an action, an occurrence or a
state of being.
– Verbals – are words that look like verbs but
act like something else.
– Verb Phrases – are verbals and any of the verb
form’s modifiers, objects or complements.

3. 3 Types of Verb Phrases
1. Participial = Adjective
a.Past (-ed)
b.Present (-ing)
c. Some irregular participles might end in –en, -n, -d, or –et.
2. Gerunds = Noun
a.As subject
b.As direct object
c. As subject complement (follows linking verb)
d.As object of preposition
3. Infinitives = to + verb
- Noun, adjective, or adverb

4. Subcategories of Verbs
1. Transitive (or monotransitive) hit, eat, kill or break with the following
subcategorization frame: ____ NP
Example: Reginald broke the vase.
2. Intransitive – arrive, cry, laugh, swim with the subcategorization
frame: ____ #
Example: The package has arrived.
After the argument, she cried.
Optional adverbs: A woman came by a few minutes ago.
His nephew cried loudly for five minutes this
morning.

5. 3. Ditransitive – give, send, tell, lend, buy, offer or show with the subcategorization
frames: ___ NP1 NP2 or ____ NP2 PP [to/for NP1]
Example: Charles sent Maria roses.
Charles sent roses to Maria.
4.Copulative (or copula), become, seem, appear, feel, be, grow, or look and with the
subcategorization frames:

____ PP Priya is in a good mood.
5.Prepositional

They agreed to the terms.

9. CONJUNCTION
– A conjunction is a part of speech that is used to connect
words, phrases, clauses, or sentences.
– Conjunctions are considered to be invariable grammar
particle, and they mar or may not stand between items
they conjoin.

10. Examples of Conjunctions
– In the following examples, the conjunctions are in bold for easy recognition:
– I tried to hit the nail but hit my thumb instead.
– I have two goldfish and a cat.
– I’d like a bike for commuting to work.
– You can have peach ice cream or a brownie sundae.
– Neither the black dress northe gray one looks right on me.
– My dad always worked hard so we could afford the things we wanted.
– I try very hard in school yet I am not receiving good grades.
