A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

The Self Development Academy
Vegam – Veda Ganitam the Amaging Mathematics
Where Maths is Fun
Mastering mathematics without tears
‘He knew all the sums; but failed because he made silly mistakes in calculations’
‘She tells all the answers at home but cannot do it well in the math exam’
‘She scored so well in English, Biology and Sanskrit. I wonder why she scored so poorly in math.’
‘She took so much time doing the first three sums, she did’nt have time for rest of the paper’
‘My son avoids mathematics until the exams are on his head’
‘My daughter is waiting to get to Junior college, so that she can leave mathematics and take a
group without math’
‘Honestly, even I never liked mathematics and did it as a compulsion only’
Are these comments by some parents sounding familiar and similar to thoughts in your mind?
Well they are all result of the math phobia suffered by one in five from all over the world.
One important reason could be the way math is taught in schools.
How can you help the situation?
Would you like your child to
- Love mathematics and do it voluntarily every day
- Learn math with fun and games
- Be not afraid of long calculations and complicated arithmetic
- Acquire skill of long mental calculations which sharpens the brain and memory
- Learn techniques of quick rechecking of calculations
- Acquire magic formulae for doing complicated sums in seconds
- Show overall improvement in academic performance
- Get full advantage of the great secrets of math hidden in our ancient scriptures, without
reading them and learning Sanskrit
Then Vegam is the right choice for you and your child
Human brain has amazing power. Carnatic Classical Violin maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman was once asked
after a concert in Germany as to how he could play so many compositions without a score sheet before
him. He said “not only me but almost all classical musicians in India play thousands of compositions only
from memory and never keep a score sheet in front of them”. But it appears very tough for the western
musicians as they are not used to it. Thus, it is only a matter of practice and habit. Children, if trained
properly can carry out amazing mental arithmetic.
The unique classroom and homework material provided in the course along with the class room
exercises, games and competitions makes learning fun and amazes you by the way it attracts your child
towards math.
2. Even parents may be surprised to know how new approaches and alternate methods of learning make
the same old math interesting and easy.
Levels of Vegam
The course is organized at four levels.
Level 1 - Basic course: covers basic arithmetic operations on small numbers through higher tasks in basic
operations, recurring decimals and Squares.
Level 2 – Advanced course: covers advanced multiplication and division techniques, Divisibility by any
number upto 53, squares and cubes, fractions, decimals, Square roots , Cube Roots, LCM and HCF,
percentages, time and distance, Work and time sums are covered. Introduction to Binomial theorem
and compound interest calculations and Vedic Binary system are also included. In addition exercises and
word-sums in 6th, 7th and 8th standard text books are used as examples.
Level 3 – Expert Course: covering Vedic Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry
Level 4 – Master’s Course: covering advanced algebra, trigonometry and calculus etc.
Pedagogy
The pedagogy followed in the course addresses the different types of intelligence dominant in a child
(Linguistic, Logical – Mathematical, Musical, Bodily – Kinesthetic, Spatial – Visual, Interpersonal or
Intrapersonal) and learning style of the child (Audio, Visual or Kinesthetic), to impart the new math skills.
Every session (total of 18 - 2hrs per week sessions or 36 - 1hr per week sessions in Level I) starts with a
game based on concepts learnt in the earlier session with gift vouchers for fast and accurate
performance. It is followed by introduction of a new concept/ method with classwork session for good
absorption. Then a fun math concept/ quiz/ problem is taken up for discussion and lateral thinking
development. An interesting/ fun/ math video is shown at the end of the session. Children do not feel
learning a burden throughout the course.
Two workbooks are provided to each student. One of the workbooks (say Workbook A) is used for
classwork and the homework is marked in another workbook (Workbook B) which is handed over to the
child. In the next session, child would submit this (Workbook B) with the homework completed. In this
session second workbook (Workbook B) is used for classwork and homework is marked in Workbook A
to be given to children. Workbook B is retained by the teacher for correction and handed over to the
child in the next session and so on. In addition several chain recitation mental arithmetic challenges are
assigned for home practice (to compete with others in the class) and earning gift vouchers.
A mid-term exam and a final exam are conducted. Certificates are awarded by SWIS® to students
successfully clearing the final exam.
Motivation
There are gift vouchers for various good practices like attendance, punctuality, completed homework
and active participation in class activities, which can be exchanged for attractive gifts at the end of the
course.
Vegam, if appreciated and followed by child, parents and the teacher, can be a turning point
in the career of the child.
