This is the first post in my series about the new features in Windows Server 2008 R2. As in my series about the new features of Windows 7, I will update the articles when I learn about new features. I will discuss some of the new features in more detail soon. Essentially, the term "virtualization" covers three different technologies in Windows Server 2008 R2: Server Virtualization, Desktop Virtualization, and Presentation Virtualization. Server Virtualization is based on Hyper-V 2.0, which will get quite a few interesting new features. The virtualization technology ehind Desktop virtualization, i.e., Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), is also Hyper-V. This is probably the most important new feature in Windows Server 2008 R2. Presentation Virtualization is nothing but the good old Terminal Server. Technically, I find it a bit odd to use the term "virtualization" in this context, but from a marketer's point of view, it probably makes a lot of sense. Note that Microsoft renamed the "Terminal Services" as "Remote Desktop Services" in Windows Server 2008 R2.
During Microsoft Techday 2012 (Malaysia), we have presented about operating system virtualization, presentation virtualization and application virtualization.

I’d like to introduce VDI-in-a-Box, an affordable all-in-one VDI software solution that delivers high-performance, high-definition virtual desktops for Small and Mid-sized Businesses. VDI-in-a-Box eliminates the high cost, IT resources and complexity of server virtualization components required by other VDI solutions. VDI-in-a-Box is… Simple to Install - Just load it on a commodity server, configure the desktop templates, the users and you’re ready to go in less than 2 hours; Simple to Manage - Using the included vdiMgr, web-based, centralized point-and-click management console; and Simple to Scale - With its patent-pending grid architecture, you just add more servers. Simple to Use - Login from over 2B devices, and a virtual desktop is readily available; For less than the cost of a PC, VDI-in-a-Box provides easily managed and secure virtual desktops with an immediate ROI instead of the 2-3 years typical with other solutions. Let me show you how we do it …
VDI-in-a-Box rewrote VDI software from the ground up to moves all the traditional VDI components into a single integrated software appliance. Start with a bare-metal server (no Microsoft O/S required) with built-in direct-attached storage and add your choice of hypervisor. Import the VDI-in-a-Box software appliance and you are ready to configure the desktops. All VDI infrastructure is built-in: from connection brokering and load-balancing to provisioning. Even high-availability is built-in! This makes it possible for a desktop IT admin to install and manage the solution without requiring network, storage and extensive virtualization expertise. VDI-in-a-Box eliminates the need for expensive infrastructure by consolidating the different moving parts required to deliver virtual desktops - such as connection brokers, load balancers, and provisioning servers, into a single software appliance that can run on any off-the-shelf server. This solution also eliminates the need for shared storage and delivers built-in high-availability using inexpensive local storage that is included on standard servers. This eliminates over 60% of VDI costs, and enables a simple and affordable desktop virtualization solution. VDI-in-a-Box moves all the traditional VDI components into a single integrated software appliance. [ENTER] Start with a bare-metal server with direct-attached storage - no Microsoft server O/S is required. [ENTER] Next, add your choice of hypervisor – XenServer, Hyper-V or vSphere. [ENTER] Import the VDI-in-a-Box software appliance and you are ready to configure the desktops. [ENTER] All VDI infrastructure is built-in: from connection brokering and load-balancing to provisioning. Even high-availability is built-in. To scale, you simply add more off-the-shelf servers and run VDI-in-a-Box on them – this forms a “grid” that you can manage centrally through the vdiManager console. So that’s the back-end. For the front-end, VDI-in-a-Box uses the Citrix Receiver to securely project these virtual desktops to almost any device: desktop PCs, laptops, thin-clients, tablets and smartphones.
By re-writing the VDI software from the ground up and moving all the hardware components into the virtual appliance, VDI-in-a-Box removes 60% of the infrastructure required by traditional VDI. This is what makes it possible to provide virtual desktops for less than the cost of PCs. VDI-in-a-Box eliminates the management servers, connection brokers and the load balancers. But the biggest advantage is that it eliminates the requirement for shared storage and clustered SQL databases and yet still provides built-in High Availability! No other solutions can make that claim. This makes it possible for a desktop IT admin to install and manage the solution without requiring network, storage and extensive virtualization expertise. To deploy VDI-in-a-Box, start with a bare-metal server (no Microsoft O/S required) with built-in direct-attached storage and add your choice of hypervisor. Import the VDI-in-a-Box software appliance and you are ready to configure the desktops. And of course it does this for less than $500/desktop. Finally VDI-in-a-Box is the only true VDI appliance .. You simply add more servers and nothing more to scale the grid to support more desktops.
I’ve already mentioned that VDI-in-a-Box is an open system that allows your choice of hypervisor, including Citrix XenServer, as well as Hyper-V and vSphere. Here are the other Citrix products used by VDI-in-a-Box: Citrix HDX technology provides an excellent high-definition, high-performance user experience Citrix Receiver enables access by almost any device Citrix Profile Manager allows you to manage all your user profile and personalization information Citrix NetScaler/Access Gateway can be used for remote access Other Citrix products that work with VDI-in-a-Box Citrix XenApp can be accessed from VDI-in-a-Box image Citrix GoToAssist enables you to manage your endpoints and set alerts for changes in your environment like a server failure, a storage or memory threshold being reached and much more ShareFile by Citrix allows you to create a custom-branded, password-protected space where you can exchange business files with clients easily and securely
New Features New product attributes necessary to achieve product line goals Key functional capabilities Performance characteristics Optimal form factor Market-driven requirements Product feature or functions to improve marketability Improvements to make the product easier to sell Partner or channel driven functions Integration (or interoperability) with other Citrix products Fit within the Product roadmap Optionally include a roadmap chart (updated as appropriate) to show how this release fits in the evolution of the product line Note 1: Tier 1 languages are: English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Simplified Chinese
All the three latest hypervisors released in recent months will be supported: Microsoft Windows 2012 Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer 6.1, and VMware vSphere/ESX 5.1. VDI-in-a-Box 5.2 allows our customers to stay current with the latest hypervisor technologies .
Microsoft Lync is a unified communications platform for instant messaging, presence, audio and video conferencing, and phone calls. In 5.2, we are building into VDI-in-a-Box the Citrix HDX optimization pack for Microsoft Lync. When delivering a unified communications client from VDI-in-a-Box virtual desktop to a large number of users, the optimization pack shifts the media processing burden from the server to the user device whenever possible, and it redirects voice and video traffic peer-to-peer (directly from one user to another, or from each user to the Lync conferencng server). These optimizations allow Microsoft Lync to work seamlessly and scale well in a VDI environment. Microsoft Lync combines the telephony features of a traditional IP PBX with IM and conferencing. With the optimization pack, SMB customers will be able to take advantage of Microsoft Lync for all their telephony needs in their VDI-in-a-Box environments. We think customers will be able to improve and streamline their communication systems at lower costs.
VIAB 5.2 will support Citrix Storefront for unified access to any Citrix CloudGateway delivered service. Users will be able to access their VDI-in-a-Box virtual desktops side-by-side with their applications and data, all in one place.
Upgrading from one version of VDI-in-a-Box to another is even easier with VDI-in-a-Box 5.2. With version 5.1, the DT agent upgrade on golden images is done through a few wizard screens. With version 5.2, all existing golden images are flagged as having an older version and with just two clicks, these images are automatically upgraded with the new desktop agent and the desktop instances created from these golden images are refreshed as per the existing refresh policy. The step-by-step wizard screens are still available so that admin can choose to test an upgraded image before publishing it.
