This week’s matchup against an Aspley side with
nothing to lose was dubbed by coach Tim
McKinley as a must win for the seniors if they
wanted to keep their season alive. A plethora of
injuries gave way for a couple of debutants in Alex
“Small Forward” Bennett and Connell “Colonel”
Fox after strong performances in the reserves and
big efforts on the training track. After a seamless
warmup the boys were left with the message to
respect the opposition and take the game on.
The first quarter started and finished in a heated
contest that did not allow for either team to
gather any momentum and meant that the
football that was played was fragmented and
messy. The close score of 17-18, however, was a
testament to the strong defense displayed by
Charlie Pershouse and Seamus Tanna who
combined for 19 marks on the day, many of which
were intercepts.
In the second quarter the Red Lions broke away
from Aspley kicking 7 goals to their 1. This epic
turn around stemmed from the 2 debutants as
they inspired the rest of the boys through their
class and composure. Despite going into the half
time break with a lead of 39 points, and suspicions
of forgetful timekeeping, the boys knew that they
were far from playing their best football. If they
wanted to not just win, but win convincingly
today they would have to turn it up another gear.
As expected, Aspley came out red hot in the third
quarter and outscored UQ 4 goals to 3. After
several questionable umpiring decisions (going
both ways) it was difficult for either team to grasp
a hold of the game and take the upper hand
Hamish “Quiche” Loraine and Reilly “Sexy”
Williamson played vital roles for the team in this
tough period as Quiche found a way to produce an
effective disposal every time he took possession,
and Big Sexy dominated in the ruck winning 35
hit outs for the day.
The Red Lions came out guns a blazing in the last
kicking the first three goals in quick succession
and finishing with seven goals for the quarter.
One of those being Josh Beattie’s 4th goal, and
another being Damian “Hungry” Ashby’s 9th, with
the two combining for more than half of the
team’s points. Another one of Hungry Ashby’s
goals came on the goal line as he managed to steal
the ball from Jake Ralston’s hands and boot it
through. In the end UQ ran away with it finishing
the match 130 – 84.
This marked an important milestone for the
seniors as it was their first win on the new deck,
and they can now begin to build their fortress on
no. 2.

After seeing the mens’ teams secure
wins on the home deck, the ladies were
eager to do the same. Coming off a big
win at home against Wilston Grange
the previous week, we set our
intentions early and aimed to meet
these in a four-quarter effort.
The team was well led by skipper
Marnie McGorm who took over the
reins for the weekend and led by
example with two-way running and
scoreboard pressure.
Jaimie Bryant, Nat Grider and Bre
Koenen were rock solid as a defensive
unit which proved tough to crack for
the Hornets. This week also saw the
return of netball cross-coder Steph
O’Brien who provided plenty of
physical dominance around the
contests. Jane Childes and Issy Hartog
provided damaging run and gun all
game, a trait they have both cemented
into their play consistently this season.
Rachel Vetter led from the front, turning
it on in a standout performance in which
she kicked a bag of 4 goals, accompanied
by Daks Davidson who also kicked 4.
Luka Yoshida-Martin went to work
quietly but effectively to kick 2 of her
own and take home BOG glory for
round 13.
Despite Maria Moloney delivering the
opposition a perfect lace-out clearance
from the centre bounce, the Hornets
appeared to struggle against a UQ team
building in confidence and composure.
We now look to the final home and
away round – an away game at Bond, in
what is set to be a big clash against the
minor premiers leading into the finals!

On the back of a huge win last weekend, the
Ressies were eager to lock in another one for
Round 13. This would mean the Ressie had
won all of their home games for the 2021
season.
The team knew this would not be an easy task,
with a disappointing loss to the Hornets
earlier in the season. Captain Lizzie Weigh
lead from the start with a huge goal from near
the 50 early in the first quarter. This was
immediately followed with a textbook tap
from Hannah Curran, straight to the evasive
Louise Tyson’s chest. The ball quickly moved
into the forward line and Emily Bowden
kicked a goal. The Hornets responded to these
early goals lifting their physicality but were
no match for Bec Barns and Hallie Pearce.
Following some quarter time height
observations, the midfield directed their
forward entry to Lucy Benjamin who towered
above the Hornets and kicked a goal early in
the second quarter. The Hornets couldn’t get
the ball past Roxy Mutschler, who took
multiple intercept marks and delivered the
ball back into the forward line, however these
unfortunately resulted in number of behinds.
Jess Middleton took a difficult mark just
inside the boundary in the third quarter,
followed up her kick to Grace Vogler and
Maddie Wood in the hot spot, and snuck a
goal through a number of Aspley players.
UNDEFEATED AT HOME
The Ressies felt the sting of the Hornets at the
end of the third quarter, with Aspley kicking
two goals, despite a goal saving block from
Amy Smothers and some strong defensive
work from Jess Heiner and Annelise Crilly.
Julia Dawson and Lilly Quinlan provided
movement down the wings and kept the ball
out of the corridor where Aspley prefer to
play. The frustration and aggression that had
built up throughout the game lead to a scrapy
and physical fourth quarter. Pressure from
Maggie Munn and Sofia Harwood-Sgorlon
kept their opponents under pressure but
Aspley hit back (literally). Ella Desrettes and
Jess Stallard shut down Aspley’s momentum
with intercept marks in the backline and got
the ball out of dangerous positions into the
safe hands of Philly Stephens. There was
plenty to celebrate when the final siren, with
the Ressies undefeated at home for 2021. It
was also a big day for two Red Lionesses, with
Maggie Munn lacing up the boots for her final
game before retiring and Maddie Wood
playing her 50th game.

With #Crumb50 trending pre-game,
anticipation was high as perennial club
pest Leo O’rouke took the stage to crack
the half century mark.
With a bye fast approaching and
following a disappointing run of results
there was no better time to take on cellar
dwellers Aspley.
A renewed focus on controlling the
football across halfback allowed
barebones midfield hit hard by exams to
command the first half.
Led by pensioner Sean Wester in the
ruck, the midfield of Spinks, Ashby and
Somerville worked hard all day with
BOG Sticks racking up touches at will.
However, stealing the limelight in an
almost complete team performance in
the first half was M. Delaney as he
booted three goals in his first 22 minutes
of football.
Supported by excellent midfield
delivery and the prolific Bagshaw it was
a dream start to a long career.
After the promising signs in the first
half, the boys went into the sheds at
halftime with plenty to look forward to
in the second.
However in a fitting tribute to Leo once
the score ticked over 50 it dried up as
the game fizzled out.
Despite not ever being challenged it was
a disappointing end to what could have
been a handy percentage boost heading
into a week off.
A trip to the ponies during the bye and a
night off training will allow a good
chance to reset with a big push into the
second half of the season.

Complacency is the enemy of success” - Alan
Woodward at Quarter Time.......probably.
Friday night football returned to the fortress with a
top 4 Red Lions outfit taking on the lowly Ferny
Grove Falcons.
5 minutes into the first quarter, onlookers could be
forgiven for wondering which team was a
premiership hopeful and which team were the
perennial cellar-dwellers.
Ferny Grove jumped out of the blocks to kick 3 of
the first 4 goals of the match, catching UQ off guard
with swift ball movement and ferocity at the contest.
Coach Woodward played his trump card early,
inserting Olly Smith into the fray, with the veterans
determination (and accurate goal kicking) helping
turn the momentum.
The Red Lions took a 7 point lead into Quarter
Time, where the playing group were greeted with a
hearty dose of home truths. Pride stung, the Red
Lions gained the upper hand in the second quarter.
Alex Francis served his midfield fleet with pin point
tap outs, Lewis “Johnny Docker” Smith ran rampant
on the wing and up forward Nate Cutcliffe posed a
major problem for the Falcons both in the air and on
the ground.
Down back, skipper Shannon Brown and Ryan
Dickson were repelling every Ferny attacking foray
with nonchalant ease. Half Time arrived and with
UQ holding a 32 point lead Coach Woody seized the
opportunity to experiment with his line up for the
3rd quarter.
Defensive Pillars Kyle Wilson and Lachlan Otto were
swung forward, the latter kicking 2 goals. Debutants
Cooper Stephens and Harry Bates came onto the
ground, both impressing with their attack on the
football.
The relentless midfield led by Wills McCulloch and
Ollie Fortescue started to overwhelm their fatiguing
and overmatched Ferny opponents. Deep into the
quarter, the mercurial Chris Pilkington provided the
play of the game, evading 3 Falcons close to the
boundary line (some would say out of bounds)
before cooly slotting the goal from a near-impossible
angle.
3 Quarter Time saw the Red Lions leading by 53
points. Coach Woody implored his charges to finish
the job in the last quarter and boost their percentage
in the process. A largely uneventful quarter played
out before a healthy home crowd. UQ kicking 3 goals
to 1, to run out winners by 73 points.
Best on the night were: Alex Francis, Lachlan Otto,
Ryan Dickson, Olly Smith, Wills McCulloch and Olly
Fortescue. The Div 4 Red Lions march forward into
next weeks encounter with Beenleigh, having
secured 4 vital competition points and learnt an
important lesson on underestimating opponents

Congratulations to our QFA Div 1 Senior's
captain Jordan 'Scooper' Williams who has
been selected in the South Queensland
Representative team!
Jordy will be taking on North Queensland in
a curtain-raiser for this weekend's St Kilda
vs. Adelaide clash at Cazaly’s Stadium in
Cairns in the annual Queensland Instra-
state Representative game. This breaks a
long drought for the club having a player in
this side. Good luck Scooper.
