Sunday 11th July 2:15pm, Leyshon Park. The
stage was set for UQAFC history. After a week
delay (thanks COVID-19) the girls were eager to
play in the clubâs first female grand final, and
even more excited to take home the cup. With
excitement and anticipation, the girls gathered at
Yeronga to prepare for the day ahead. We were
bolstered but amazing supporters who
motivated us all day long. Unfortunately our
excitement didnât translate and we started the
match a touch off the mark, with Bond applying
ferocious pressure. The first quarter came and
went in the blink of an eye with Bond taking an
early lead. At the end of the first quarter, we re-
grouped and felt weâd finally settled into the
game and were ready to take on the uphill battle
ahead of us. The second quarter was a yo-yo
affair. After some superb defensive efforts from
Luka Yoshida-Martin, Madi Crowley showed
great composure to snag an early goal and we
were up and about. Bond hit back and the game
continued to be hotly contested. We entered
half-time 13 points down but with a renewed
energy and determination. We entered the
second half with the belief that the game was
ours to winâŠ. and didnât we ever. Emphatic
pressure in the midfield turned the game, with
the forward line making the most of our
opportunities. We dominated the 3rd quarter,
kicking 6 goals to 1, to enter the final quarter
with an 18-point lead.
However, we knew the job was not over, with
Bond having kicked 4 last quarter goals in their
preliminary final. In the end, it was fitting that
BOG Dakota took an exceptional mark and was
lining up for one last goal as the final siren went.
Despite a healthy lead, it was a no-brainer for
Daks to push back and seal the win with a
superb goal, sending the players, coaches and
supporters into an absolute frenzy. Celebrations
continued off the field, with the cup and well
into the night at the RE. Each and every player,
coach and volunteer contributed to the success
and resultant premiership in 2021.

Following an Annastacia Palaszczuk enforced
splitting of the points with Coorparoo last week
the boys were keen to find some mojo heading
into the backend of the season. The conditions
out at the home of the Hornets were not
conducive to sexy footy with the (Josh) gale
forced winds described as a six-goal breeze by
some at the ground. The opening quarter saw us
control much of the possession but failed to
fully capitalise. Our focal point up forward and
man who would push a child out of his way if it
got him closer to the leading goalkicker award,
Damian ânever seen on the circuitâ Ashby, was
struggling to find the big sticks. Nevertheless,
we headed to the first change with a 14-point
lead. Aspley came hard at us in the second term
but were mostly thwarted by some excellent
defensive work. Debutant Will âMr. Chowâ
Delchau was resolute down back and looked
very comfortable in the senior line-up chopping
off plenty of pesky Hornet attacks. After
weathering the storm, we were able to counter-
punch through an absolutely brilliant running
goal from big talented swingman Michael
Randone. At first glance it looked as if he had
taken two running bounces before coolly
slotting it home from 35m out however, after
further post-match discussion it was agreed that
Big Mike had actually taken 6 running bounces
en route to goals. The shepherding work from
Jake âSargeâ Ralston has to be commended as
well. There was a bit of a fracas to end the half
and to the surprise of many it emerged that the
witty chat of Cameron âSmythâ Smith was the
instigator and he came away with a flattering
left-eye shiner. .
The third quarter saw a more polished
performance from the lads and they piled on
six goals to Aspleyâs two which broke the game
open. Jordan âIce-cream Scoopsâ Williams, Liam
âLehmoâ McBrien and Blake âPeteâs sonâ
McClennan knuckled down in the centre and
made sure we took full advantage of the wind.
Blake in particular was putting in the hard yards
and earned himself a handy $150 for his game
high 11-tackles. The last quarter could have been
a nervous one if Aspley had gained some
momentum with the wind but the boys shut the
game down well. Nic âTritonâ Creighton,
Tommy âLarussoâ Bennett and Riley âSpinsterâ
Spink worked hard on the wings and covered
the exits well all day. The Hornets only
managed one final term goal to our two. In the
end we walked away with a 27-point victory, not
our finest performance of the season but a very
important four points as we make a run for the
finals. A special shoutout to all of the helpers
and volunteers, particularly the runner, who
always do a fantastic job. Next week we make
the notoriously difficult away trek to Caloundra
with it all to play for

It was a memorable weekend for the Ressies
who, after being down at quarter, half, and
three-quarter time, clutched victory from the
jaws of defeat in cold and blustery conditions at
the Hornetâs Nest. The first quarter of the match
saw Aspley use the favourable wind to slot 3
quick goals, putting early pressure on the boys
of the varsity. With the breeze at our backs, and
Zook Mitchell being kind enough to join us,
hopes were high that fortunes would turn in the
second term, however failure to capitalise on
these on these factors saw Uni go into half-time
down by 2 goals. As a must-win game in our
finals campaign, the Ressies desperately needed
to shake things up in the half-time interval. The
change room was initially a sombre place in the
half-time break, however as strategic
mastermindsâ Krag and Binksy charted the path
to victory, and seniorâs coach Timmy stepped in
to deliver an arousing spray, it didnât take long
for the boys to get up and about. Courageous
captain Sean Westerhuis promised post-match
victory beers on him, which had the Ressies
ready to run through brick walls as the siren
sounded to start the third term. From there, the
boys banded together to pull off a memorable
win. Debutantâs Liam Picton and Dom Pinder
were impressive, with high-intensity defensive
efforts and calm execution of skills. After being
promoted to the 2âs, Hamish âegg tartâ Lorraine
was dazzling, linking up with Sid Russel, Tim
Carius and Evan Skuuuulander to provide drive
out of the backline.
Alex Binks made it through the game uninjured,
working tirelessly in the guts along with Will
Palmer, Sticks, Henners, Besty and McLovin
Ashby to set the platform for the comeback. Up
forward, Sam Bolton and Snakey Somerville
marked the ball tremendously given the
conditions. Top gun Reilly Williamson assessed
the atmospheric conditions exceptionally, safely
piloting the Sherrin through the gale-force
winds to record 2 goals. However, standout
B.O.G. was our feline leader Wester, who put
the Ressies on his shoulders, battling hard
throughout the game. He was outstanding in the
ruck, a great marking target all day, and drifted
forward to put through two important goals
himself. Wester also followed through on his
half-time promise, and the boys enjoyed a few
Covid-safe ales to celebrate the win. Another big
week on the training track awaits, as the Ressies
prepare for the next step in their flag campaign
against Caloundra next week.

Fresh off a forced bye last round, the Friday Night
Fighters were excited at the prospect of going 2 - 0 for
the season against our Coorparoo rivals. Unfortunately
St Lucia appeared to have experienced more rain than
the rest of the City, so a late field closure resulted in the
home game privileges been given to our opposition. No
strangers to adapting to change, our team of 22 made
the trip across the river without complaint. Nick âCome
to Savisâ Davis set the tone early with a stellar warm up
and a clear and experienced message of the importance
of our best football at this stage of the season in our
quest for the flag. A goalless first quarter was not the
start we were looking for. Our oppositionâs attack on the
ball helped them to enjoy a 9 point lead going into
quarter time. Sandy âSet Shotâ Labrom slotted our first
goal early in the second quarter, rewarding the
continued high pressure efforts from our front six men.
Coorparooâs inaccuracy on goal, influenced from stellar
defensive work led by Lachlan âBig Fistâ Otto and Kyle
âBig Bootâ Wilson, kept us in the game as we went into
half time 7 points down. Coach âWoodyâ Woodward
gave us the halftime speech we needed, reiterating that
if we deserved to be the team pushing for the top spot
in the competition our ability to put together four
quarters of high intensity football must improve. Jae
âCandyshopâ Luberink danced around the field all night,
taking the game on with his pace and showing how
dangerous he can be around the big sticks. A spectacular
snap over several Coorparoo heads spurred the boys
into 3 quarter time with a strong sense of belief to finish
the game strongly. Fraser âThank God Youâre Hereâ
Labromâs ever-reliable brand of football helped open
up our game and provide a fresh attack on the footy
through several switches across the half back line. Sully
âThe Bullâ Grevis-James put together another physically
dominant four quarters, with his tackling ability and
desire to win the ball ensuring that Coorparoo had no
easy clearances.
Jack âOf Course Itâs Going Inâ Halley and Wills
âShatterproofâ McCullough further proved their ability
to nail just about every aspect of the game, dominating
clearances and both scoring handy fourth quarter goals
off the back of individual brilliance and a desire to keep
us in reach of a win. Despite UQ winning the second
half and keeping our opponents goalless in the fourth,
Coorparoo found themselves 4 point winners in a low-
scoring battle. Wise words from Olly Smith and Woody
after the siren helped us realise the valuable lessons of a
loss to our cause - so long as we all become more
committed to be better and train harder. Our team is
maturing every week and still sits in second place. With
opposition teams starting to find some form, every
game from here on out must be treated as if it were a
final to give us the best chance to hold the trophy up at
the end of the season. The importance of our boys
rediscovering success this week cannot be overstated as
we travel to Pacific Pines to take on a team that will
definitely not have forgotten about our one point win
against them earlier in the season. As always, a huge
thanks must go to the boys that travelled to the game to
support and help out with the duties. Weâre so much
more than the team of 22 that takes the field and itâs
this kind of team culture that will continue to help us
succeed this season. One team, one dream.
