POINT BORO — The Point
Boro girls indoor track team
continues to impress and
Wednesday’s Shore Confer-
ence Championships were
no different. Against a variety
of strong competition and
larger schools the Panthers
took a fifth place team finish.
“Our team continues to
score well at some of these
big meets and it is nice to
look and see our team listed
in the top five of a very com-
petitive league with many
schools that are much bigger
than ours,” said head coach
Billy Kostenko. “That said, I
always look at results as a by-
product of our effort and
team bond because it is in
those ways that we best ap-
ply our talents.”
In the team’s best perform-
ance of the meet Natalie
Dikun took first place in the
pole vault. She cleared 10-00
for a personal best beating
out Southern’s Kristina Rayl-
man who cleared 9-06.
“I am so happy for Natalie.
She is a girl who has worked
so hard and dealt with in-

POINT BORO — It was a night
full of tough competition
during Wednesday’s Shore
Conference Championships
at the Bennett Indoor Sports
Complex in Toms River. The
meet featured the best of the
best in the Shore Conference
and Point Boro’s boys indoor
track team was there ready to
compete.
Out of 23 total teams the
Panthers finished 11th as a
team thanks do strong per-
formances on the track and
field.
The strongest performance
of the day belonged to Nick
Vail-Stein who was crowned
a Shore Conference Champi-
on after taking first place in
the pole vault event.
Vail-Stein beat out the
competition with an indoor
personal best of 12-06.
“He continues to show
poise when the competition
comes around,” said Boro
head coach Mike Colonna. “I
admire the hard work and
dedication that Nick has to
put into the event and you
can see that in his perform-
ances.”
Jonathan Brust of Jackson
Memorial also cleared 12-06
but Vail-Stein did it in less
jumps for the first-place fin-
ish.
Another strong finish came
in the 3200-meter dash from
Boro freshman Devin Hart
who clocked in a ninth place
finish with a time of 9:51.8.
Hart also took 25th in the
1600-meter run with a time of
4:45.63.
“Devin continues to sur-
prise running a season, team
and personal best in the 3200-
meter run,” said head coach
Mike Colonna.
Hart has done a solid job of
transferring his talents on the
cross-country course to the
track and learns ways to im-
prove with each race. Only a
freshman, he will be an inte-
gral part to the Boro track
team for years to come.
Senior Dylan Peters also
ran the 3200-meter dash and
finished in 23rd with a time of
10:21.62.
In the high jump event
Boro’s Tyler Haines cleared
5-08 as he continues to im-
prove his jumps. The Pan-
thers also showed improve-
ment in the shot put with
junior Jessie Garcia who
added three feet to his per-
sonal best with a throw of 36-
10.

POINT BEACH — It is difficult
to pinpoint the exact moment
things went south for the
Point Beach boys basketball
team in their 76-39 loss to
Mater Dei last Thursday.
It could have been the Ser-
aphs first possession after
winning the tipoff where an
aggressive Garnet Gulls de-
fense committed the game’s
first foul 10 seconds into the
game. That foul led to a Mater
Dei layup after Beach’s Alex
Mrusek blocked the first at-
tempt from Elijah Barnes.
Or maybe it was the Gulls
first possession that started in
the hands of Jimmy Panzini
and was passed around, even-
tually back into the senior’s
hands, before the one-man
SWAT team of Barnes rejected
Panzini’s shot.
Either way, Mater Dei’s pos-
session following the big block
featured nine passes and only

POINT BEACH — It was a
rollercoaster week for the
Point Beach wrestling team
with a one-point loss to
Middletown South last
Thursday and a big 57-9 win
over Keyport on Wednes-
day.
Wednesday’s match was a
quick one that featured
quality wrestling from the
Garnet Gulls. Keyport did
not fill all the weights,
which meant some Beach
wrestlers did not get to
wrestle.
“We have a tough one to-
morrow so be ready,” Bower
told his athletes that did not
get to wrestle. “When your
number is called you have to
be ready to wrestle. Forfeits
stink but it’s part of the
sport.”
The match started in the
106-pound weight class and
Beach’s Will Jarvis lost by a
4-2 decision. In the 113-
pound bout Keyport se-
cured a victory by a pin in
the first period to go up 9-0

Garnet Gulls
come up short

POINT BORO — For the sec-
ond time this season the
Point Beach girls basketball
team came up short against
St. Rose, a state-ranked pow-
erhouse team. The two teams
tipped-off Tuesday at Point
Beach High School and St.
Rose went home with the
commanding 68-27 win.
It was St. Rose’s Elizabeth
Marsicano and Lucy Thomas
under the basket and Mikayla
Markham and Jennifer Louro
on the perimeter that gave
the Garnet Gulls the most
trouble throughout the game.
Marsicano and Thomas
had height on every Beach
player, which helped achieve
their combined 17 rebounds
and 24 points. Thomas actu-
ally finished the contest with
a game-high 18 points and
three blocks.
To the Garnet Gulls’ credit
they never stopped playing
and looked for ways to pene-
trate St. Rose’s tough defense.
After the first half of play
St. Rose was up 42-15 but the
Gulls never stopped playing
basketball.
Players like McKayla
Hughes, Cameron Barnes
and Erinne Regan used the
game to work on assists and
moving the ball around the
court while patiently waiting
for the open shot.
Hughes finished with a
team-high seven points, Re-
gan finished with six points
and Barnes contributed two
points.
Even though Point Beach
only scored 12 points in the
second half, they came out
with a less sporadic style of
play than in the first half
when the Purple Roses had
them on their heels.
Unfortunately, it was not
the only loss the team dealt
with this week. Last Thurs-
day the Gulls traveled to play
Mater Dei where they lost by
a score of 43-25.
Leading the way for Point
Beach was freshman Carleigh
Burns who dropped 13 points
in the win. Regan chipped in
seven.

Gulls will try and get back on
track when they travel to play

Loss at the buzzer keeps B South race tight

POINT BORO — It is a tight
race in the B South division
for first place and the Point
Boro girls basketball team
had a critical game against
Donovan Catholic on
Wednesday. A Panthers win
would have provided a little
relief but it was Donovan
Catholic’s Melissa Buxton
who hit a buzzer beater to lift
the Griffins to a 67-65 win.
The shot came on an in-
bounds play with .05 seconds
left in the game and was a
catch-and-shoot routine off
the pass.
“I’m not going to say it’s a
lucky shot because she had
three girls on her but there’s
not much else we could have
done,” said Boro’s Megan
Hughes after the loss.
The game was a battle
throughout with the Panthers
fighting back from a 10-point
deficit at one point. Both
teams struggled with foul
trouble, which led to other
players stepping up.
“Our mentality was just re-
ally to continue to attack
them because they were in
foul trouble the whole entire
game,” stated Hughes. “So the
more we kept driving the
more we had an opportunity
to get them out of the game.”
But for Boro it was Ally
Lassen that had to work
through foul trouble all game
and Hughes was the one who
stepped up, finishing with a
game-high 37 points.
“Personally my attack
mode once Ally was out of
the game I knew I needed to
help and feed the team al-
most,” she explained. “I was
either driving or shooting.
Not an excessive amount but
enough to help my team.”
Down 65-62 with 52 sec-
onds left in the final quarter
Hughes snagged a steal and
coach David Drew called a
timeout. With their posses-
sion it was Hughes who
drove to the hoop drawing
contact while making the
layup. She went to the line
and drained the free throw to
tie the game.
Although the Panthers ef-
forts fell just short it was a
phenomenal basketball game
for the team. They remain in
the race for a B South title
and have another tough game
against Manchester Town-
ship tonight.
“Coach Drew already told
us we need to put this one be-
hind us because we’re still in
second place even though
Mon Don [Donovan
Catholic] is with us,” said
Hughes. “If we beat Man-
chester and Mon Don beats
Manchester then we’re still
division champs.”
Last time the two teams
played Manchester secured
the win, 58-46. Hughes and
the rest of the team are ready
to work for a different out-
come this time.
“We still are going to come
out and play harder than we
did against Mon Don and
hopefully Ally isn’t in foul
trouble so she can help me,”
she said with a laugh.
The close loss to Donovan
Catholic was the team’s sec-
ond game of the week. Last
Thursday before the snow-
storm worked its way into
town, the Panthers hosted
Central Regional and won
46-34.
The game was close
through the first two quarters
of play with Boro pushing
ahead by one-point, 19-18, at
the half. It was the second
half where the Panthers
found separation with a com-
bination of relentless offense
and strong defense.
They outscored Central in
the third quarter 12-7 and
then again in the fourth quar-
ter 15-9.
Hughes had a game-high 21
points and without foul trou-
ble for Lassen she was able to
chip in 16. The two combined
for 25 of Boro’s 50 rebounds
in the game. Lassen pulled
down 13 and Hughes pulled
down 12.
Tonight Point Boro has a
big B South showdown
against Manchester Town-
ship. The game is at home
and tipoff is scheduled for
6:30 p.m.

Boro boys basketball team
found themselves in a two-
game rut this week with one
loss to Central Regional last
Thursday and another loss to
Donovan Catholic on
Wednesday.
The Panthers 68-59 loss to
Central Regional was espe-
cially difficult after they had
outscored their opponent 32-
13 in the first half. Boro had
held Central to nine points in
the first quarter and only four
more in the second.
Central Regional surged on
in the third quarter putting
up 27 points on the Panthers
who added sixteen. This kept
them out front 48-40 but the
momentum was in Central’s
court.
The Panthers gave up a 28-
point fourth and final quarter
while only scoring 11, to close
out the road game behind
nine points.
John Duda led the Panthers
with 14 points in the loss.
Matt VanNostrand added 12
and Mike Licchio chipped in
10. Point Boro only made one
3-pointer during the game
and that belonged to Jeff
Maves.
Boro’s points from down-
town were in stark contrast
to Central’s who dropped a
total of seven 3-pointers.
Central’s Anthony Pentair
scored four buckets from be-
yond the arc and finished
with 18 points. Teammate
Maks Gruszecki also finished
the game with 18 points for
Central.
Point Boro continued to
stay stuck in the rut with
Wednesday’s home loss to
Donovan Catholic, 70-49.
The Panthers were moving
the ball well but the ball was
just not falling through the
hoop. On Donovan’s side of
the court misses were few
and far between. By first
quarter’s end the Griffin’s
had established a 20-7 lead.
Donovan Catholic added
another 20 points in the sec-
ond quarter and Boro stayed
behind with 11 to go into half-
time down 40-18.
Play continued in the same
pattern during the third quar-
ter but there was a moment
taken to recognize Donovan’s
Riley Collins who hit his
1,000th career point. After a
steal he was fouled going up
for a layup and went to the
line one point away from
1,000. He hit his first free
throw nothing-but-net and
the Griffins’ fans in atten-
dance were on their feet.
In a display of good sports-
manship, Point Boro let
Collins and the Griffins cele-
brate his achievement before
he went back to the line to
make his second free throw.
Collins finished the game
with 15 points for Donovan.
In the fourth quarter Boro
head coach Kevin Hynes sat
his starters and put in some
younger players to gain some
valuable varsity experience.
The fourth quarter was the
only quarter the Panthers
outscored Donovan, 16-12.
VanNostrand led Boro with
11 points and Connor Costi-
gan dropped 10 points in the
loss. Donovan’s leading scor-
er was Tyler McShea with 19
points.
Tonight the Panthers will
matchup against Manchester
Township. The game is away
and tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

time a player scores 20
points or more in a basket-
ball game it is an impressive
feat.
Point Boro’s Megan
Hughes blew that feat out of
the water Wednesday with
37 points against Donovan
Catholic. The Panthers end-
ed up losing the game 67-65
at the buzzer but it takes
nothing away from Hughes’
phenomenal play.
“Personally my attack

minute of play before

Hughes has been an inte-
gral part of Boro’s basket-
ball team, playing with in-
tensity each game.
She bounced back from
an injury to her wrist in the
summer and has improved
her game since last year.
“I switched to AAU team
so I was playing against
harder competition. Then I
broke my wrist in the sum-
mer so I was in the gym
with my right hand for
three months straight,” she
explained. “That helped me
because now I can go both
ways.”
She leads the team with
226 points, 43 points and 37
assists.
“I also used that time to
get stronger in my legs. It
was more about strength
training and making sure I
was up to par with run-
ning,” stated Hughes. “I was
on the treadmill a lot actual-
ly. Just really staying up to
par even though I couldn’t’
shoot.”
Boro is in a tight race for
a B South division title and
Hughes wants to win it and
get the team set up for a
successful next year.
“This year we want to
win the division,” said the
junior. “Next year it’s pretty
much the same thing and
getting higher seeds in the
Shore Conference Tourna-
ment and the state tourna-
ment so we get home games
for our senior year.”

THE OCEAN STAR
Boro wrestling team compet-
ed in another shootout match
last Friday, this time against
Wall Township. The match,
which had been moved up to
beat the snow, was decided by
three points with Wall on top
of Boro 35-32.
“Wall has a ton of talent this
season. You can appreciate
anytime you get to wrestle a
Top 20 team in New Jersey,”
said head coach Pat Brady.
“We liked the way our guys
wrestled for the most part, but
in the end we came up a little
short.”
Point Boro chose to forfeit
the first bout [220] and Dom
Infante was bumped up to
wrestle Wall’s heavyweight,
Darryl Valme. Infante pinned
him 1:15 into the second period
and the match was tied at six.
Ben Sabo secured a first pe-
riod pin in the 106-pound bout
and Tyler Tweedie followed
up with a 12-3 major decision
win in 113 to put the Panthers
out in front 16-6.
Wall then won the 120-, 126-
and 132-pound bouts by major
decision, decision and major
decision, respectively, for a
one-point lead. In the middle

After 4:50 of wrestling in
the 138-pound class Boro’s Dy-
lan Davies pinned Josiah
Schucht for a brief Panthers
lead. In the 145-pound weight
class Wall’s Rob Kanniard
pinned Matt Youmans in the
second period to retake their
one-point lead, 23-22.
In the 152-pound bout
Courtland Hackel earned
three points for the Panthers
defeating Alex Cortez 8-0.
Wall answered in the 160-
pound weight class with a de-
cision win to tie the match at
26.
Point Boro elected to forfeit
the 170-pound bout and bump
up Gene Franceschini but the
tactic did not pay dividends as
it had with Infante. Frances-
chini wrestled Wall’s Josh
Glantzman in the 182-pound
class. They went the full six
minutes and Glantzman took
the decision win to clinch the
match.
“We always tell our
wrestlers that the team comes
first. Our wrestlers need to be
warmed up and ready to wres-
tle either their weight or one
weight above them,” ex-
plained Brady. “We felt that
bumping Franceschini and In-
fante gave our team the best
chance to win. Dom and Gene
are team guys, they put the
program before themselves
every time.”
The final bout was forfeited
by Wall and they took the
match 35-32. It is always tough
to lose but the match may
have played into Boro’s favor
for the Shore Conference
Tournament [SCT], which
was seeded this week.
Brady served as the B South
representative so he learned
first hand how difficult it is to
see a tournament.
“There’s been a great deal
of parody in the Shore. As
reps we felt we did the best
job we could. Boro ended up
with the nine seed,” stated
Brady. “We were caught in a
quadrangle with Ocean, Jack-
son Liberty and Colts Neck so
it came to a vote.”
Each of those teams had a
win over another team within
that group.
“We would have accepted
anywhere from nine to 12 be-
cause those teams are just that
close,” he added. “I think our
tight loss to [No. 3] Wall
played in our favor in the
minds of some division reps.”
With the 9-seed the Pan-
thers wrestled yesterday
against 8-seeded Brick Memo-
rial in the preliminary round
of the SCT.
With Brick Memorial being
the defending champion
Brady and his squad knew not
to overlook them.
“We’re preparing our
wrestlers for that match. It
takes a full team effort to beat
a team of Brick Memorial’s
caliber,” said Brady. “When
the field of competition is as
tough as the Shore Confer-
ence Tournament, you would
be foolish to look ahead of the
opponent that is right in front
of you.”

the Beach bench to jump out
to a 5-0 lead.
But do not get it wrong –
Point Beach fought for the
first half of the first quarter.
A Mike Rice layup, followed
by a Mrusek bucket, was then
capped off with a 3-pointer
from Rice to give the Gulls a
brief 7-5 lead.
The Seraphs answered
with a three and then Panzini
was fouled on a layup. He hit
both shots from the charity
stripe for a one-point Beach
lead, which flipped a few
more times.
Mater Dei drained a shot
from downtown and Rice an-
swered with his second of the
quarter to regain the lead. But
Mater Dei was firing on all
cylinders from 3-point land
and they hit another three for
the lead, which they never
gave up the rest of the game.
The shot marked the start
of a 35-4 run by the Seraphs to
end the first half with a 46-16
lead and was highlighted by a
Barnes dunk in transition.
Beach’s four points in the
second quarter came from
Luke Frauenheim who scored
a layup off the bench and
Danny Frauenheim who was
good for two from the free
throw line.
The second half was much
of the same with Mater Dei
staying on point with their
play but Beach did put to-
gether a better half than the
first.
The Seraphs scored nine
straight to start the third
quarter but Trevor Covey
ended the lopsided run with
a three for Beach.
The Garnet Gulls would
score 13 points in the third
quarter for their highest
quarter total of the game.
They only scored 10 more in
the fourth quarter as Mater
Dei cruised to the 76-39 win.
The Seraphs had three
players in double digits in the
win with senior Kyle Elliot
scoring a game-high 16
points. Rice put up 14 points
for Point Beach.
The loss marked the end of
a four-game win streak for
the Gulls but they looked to
get back on track in a game
against St. Rose on Wednes-
day.
Point Beach fought tooth
and nail to overcome a 43-35
deficit at the start of the
fourth quarter to win the
game by a score of 61-45.
“We picked up full court
man and I think it was a game
we were both pretty much
even, it was a game that came
down to who wanted it a little
bit more,” said head coach
Nick Catania. “We have been
in a lot of games this year and
we were not going to lose this
one. We were going to do
whatever we had too.”
The Gulls defense really
stepped up in the final quar-
ter holding St. Rose to two
made foul shots at the 5:04
mark before outscoring them
18-0 the rest of the way. The
defense also generated five
turnovers, which got them to
the basket or the foul line.
Panzini had 11 points includ-
ing a couple of and-one plays
off the steals.
“I thought it was the whole
team defense picked up. We
rushed them into shots, we
pressured them all over the
floor and everyone had a
hand in it,” explained Cata-
nia. “They were really getting
after it, making it tough on St.
Rose to run their offense.”
The Garnet Gulls secured
the lead for good with 4:44
left in the game on a Danny
Frauenheim and-one play.
Beach’s fourth quarter
surge was something Catania
has been looking for all sea-
son.
“I think we are capable of
playing like that. That was
the first time all year we
came out and played like
that,” he said. “A quarter
where we really attacked the
quarter. We didn’t wait for
something good to happen
we made good things hap-
pen.”
Catania hopes the team can
carry the momentum into
tonight’s game against Ran-
ney, saying, “We know that is
what we can be, we just have
to reproduce it, go back to
practice do it in practice and
do it Friday night against
Ranney.”
The game is at home and
tipoff is set for 5:15 p.m.

Another big Boro perform-
ance came on the track from
Katie Bragen who ran a per-
sonal best 11:09.07 in the
3200-meter dash for a second
place finish. Bragen, always a
strong competitor, put her
head down to beat out Man-
alapan’s Kiera Nealon by six
seconds who was ahead of
Bragen during the race.
“Katie has had so much
success but I think she is still
uncovering just how good
she can be,” stated Kostenko.
“Tonight she took a big step
forward with her aggressive-
ness and confidence to chase
down the second place run-
ner. She took a big risk and
she got a big reward with her
best ever winter race.”
Rounding out Boro’s suc-
cess at the meet was Megan
Zabelski in the high jump
event. She cleared 5-00 for
third place and continues to
be the anchor for the Pan-
thers in the high jump.
“Megan has been a model
of consistency and effort for
four years now,” explained
Kostenko. “She routinely
jumps at a level that so many
others aspire to reach even
just once. We can't ask for
much more than what she
gives us in terms of work eth-
ic, focus and competitive-
ness."
Even though Dikun, Bra-
gen and Zabelski cashed in
the big finishes for Boro
there were still other mem-
bers of the team contribut-
ing points and improving
their times.
“I am proud of the com-
petitive risks that the girls
are taking to get better.
Those that placed get a lot
of recognition but there are
so many other girls on our
team that performed at
their best tonight at a time
when their best was need-
ed,” stated Kostenko.
“Danielle Tsougarakis, Emi-
ly Tufano, Kristi Lennon,
Jess Gaven, Emily Varga and
Halle Ferm all had personal
best performances tonight
and I think those efforts are
so important to keep push-
ing our team to new
heights."
Tsougarakis ran her per-
sonal best in the 800-meter
run with a time of 2:26.95.
Her time was good enough
for a 10th place finish. Tu-
fano and Lennon also ran
the 800-meter run and fin-
ished with personal bests.
Tufano ran a time of 2:36.98
and Lennon ran a time of
2:42.9.
Gaven clocked in a per-
sonal best in the 55-meter
dash with a time of 7.73. She
finished in 13th place. Ferm
also ran the 55-meter dash
and finished with a person-
al best time of 8.35.
Rounding out the person-
al bests for the Panthers
was Varga who achieved a
personal best throw in the
shot put with a distance of
24-05.
Kostenko hopes his team
capitalizes on their success
and uses it as motivation as
they prepare for the state
sectionals on Feb. 6.

POINT BORO — Point Boro’s
2015 football season came full
circle Sunday during the an-
nual Black and Gold Football
Parents Club Banquet held at
the Lobster Shanty.
The featured speaker was
Gian Paul Gonzalez, a famil-
iar face who had spoken to
the team prior to the season.
At that time Gonzalez, a mo-
tivational speaker, preached
to the team his mantra of “All
In” and the Panthers adopted
the slogan, which played a
role in their 8-2 season and B
South co-championship.
At Sunday’s banquet his
message was different and he
focused on helping the play-
ers thank those that have
made a difference in their
lives.
“It was really cool because
he gave us a different mes-
sage than he did the first time
he spoke to us,” said senior
Gene Franceschini. “He was
really grateful for what we do
for the Challenger Program
for special needs kids, so his
message was that we needed
to thank those who con-
tributed to our success this
year.”
Gonzalez recited the story
of Charles Plumb who was a
U.S. Navy jet pilot in Viet-
nam. After 74 successful com-
bat missions, Plumb was shot
down during his 75th.
He was able to eject but
unfortunately parachuted
down into enemy hands and
he spent six years in a com-
munist Vietnamese prison.
Plumb survived the ordeal
but never would have had the
chance to if it were not for
the parachute that was
packed for him.
It was not until years later
that he accidentally met the
man who had packed his
parachute that day, saving his
life.
Ever since then Plumb has
preached the importance of
showing gratitude for those
that have “packed your para-
chute.”
Gonzalez reiterated that
message to the Boro football
players and charged each
player to cut two pieces from
a decommissioned United
States Air Force parachute –
one piece for them to keep
and the other piece to give to
someone who has made a dif-
ference in their lives.
The players appreciated
his message and the fact he
showed up to speak with
them again, especially with
the Pro Bowl this weekend
where Gonzalez is scheduled
to speak with the players and
coaches.
“He's just a really cool and
inspirational person and I'm
glad he came to speak to us
again,” stated Franceschini.
“It shows us that he really
does care.”
The banquet also high-
lighted the success of the 21
graduating seniors, who were
there as sophomores two sea-
sons ago when the Panthers
went 1-9.
Head coach Sean Henry
took the time to speak about
each senior and their contri-
butions to the team after ac-
knowledging his coaching
staff and the rest of the play-
ers by class.
In turn, the seniors went
out with a laugh as the ban-
quet concluded with the an-
nual roast of the coaching
staff.
The combination of the
senior class wanting to turn
the Boro football program
around and Gonzalez’s “All
In” mantra showed in prac-
tice and during games with
each play during the fall sea-
son.
The opportunity to sit back
and truly enjoy the Panthers’
effort on the gridiron this
past fall was long overdue
and the players, parents and
coaches in attendance en-
joyed the banquet, bringing a
close to a truly successful
season.

freshwater fly fisher then you
won’t want to miss the
Somerset Fly Fishing Show
that takes place this weekend
at the Garden State Exhibit
Center in Somerset. This is
the largest and best saltwater
and freshwater fly fishing
show in the northeast during
this winter show season.
Show Director Ben
Furimsky says “Welcome to
the 24th Somerset Fly Fishing
Show, the largest all fly-fishing
show in the world. Somehow
we have managed to expand
this show yet again. We have
used every inch of floor space,
increased the show hours,
expanded the Women’s
Showcase, expanded the sem-
inar schedule, and increased
our offering of special classes
with the experts. All of the
biggest and best manufactur-
ers, shops, and lodges will be
represented at the show.”
There will also be many of
the industry’s most talented
fly tiers at the show. They will
be located in the fly tiers aisle
and will be spinning up some
of the most effective saltwater
and freshwater patterns for
our area. You can watch and
learn and even tie with many
of them. Another highlight of
the show will be the many
instructional seminars that
will be presented throughout
the three-day period. For the
saltwater enthusiast these
seminars will range from
opportunities from around the
world to where, when and
how to fly fish our local
beaches, jetties, back bays, and
inshore waters.
If you come to the show on
Saturday I will be giving a
presentation on striped bass
that will cover how to catch
striped bass on the fly from
April through December in
our local waters. I will go over
the tactics, techniques, and fly
tackle to use, when and where
to go, and discuss the chrono-
logical order of bait migra-
tions that we see along our
coast that stimulate blitzes to
occur. I will also show the par-
ticular flies you should use to
emulate each of the baits that
we see along our coast. My
presentation will be at 12:15pm
in the Strike Room in the adja-
cent Doubletree hotel. If you
come to the show on Sunday
my Shore Catch partner Capt
Gene Quigley will be giving
the same presentation at
2:15pm at the same location.
Show hours are Friday 9-6;
Saturday 8:30-5:30; and
Sunday 9-4:30. Admission is
adult $18 for one day, $28 for
two-day pass, $38 for three-
day pass; children under 5 free,
under 12 is $2, scouts under 16
in uniform are free, active mil-
itary are $10 with ID.

the only ones they would
win.
“Their best two kids are
their 106- and their 113-
pounders, their two seniors,”
said Bower. “What we tell the
guys is if you can win big,
win big and if you’re going to
lose, lose as small as you can,
which means try to save
bonus points. Sometimes you
can’t and that’s just part of
the sport.”
The Garnet Gulls not only
won big but also won swiftly
and decisively through each
bout after Keyport gave
them the lead with forfeits in
the 120- and 126-pound
weight classes.
It took Roddy Rupp 59
seconds to pin Keyport’s
Barret Bremekamp in the
132-pound bout and Beach
was up 18-9. Then in the 138-
pound bout Jacob Clement
snuck in a Beach pin with 12
seconds left in the first peri-
od.
Point Beach’s big three –
John Finnerty, Giancarlo
Crivelli and Jimmy Sherlock
– each added pins in their re-
spective weight classes, 145-,
152- and 160-pounds.
The 170-pound bout be-
tween Beach’s Ryan Fran-
zoni and Keyport’s Kenneth
Harrigan had a scary mo-
ment. Franzoni had taken
down Harrigan who was
working for an escape and it
appeared his ankle got tan-
gled up and was twisted on
the way down. He was
checked out on the mat by a
trainer and eventually
helped off for further exami-
nation. Franzoni took the
win by injury default.
In the 182-pound bout Vin-
cent Storino kept the pin
streak going for the Gulls
with a pin two seconds shy
of the first period buzzer.
Neither team put wrestlers
on the mat for the 195- and
220-pound bouts and Beach
sat with a 54-9 lead with one
bout to go.
It was the heavyweight
class and Forrest Gardner
went up against Keyport’s
Erik Nellis. In what seems to
be the Gardner way, the
match went to overtime pe-
riods after ending tied at 1-1.
“He’s so used to overtime
he wrestles in it so much,”
stated Bower with a smile af-
ter Gardner took the 2-1 win
in overtime. “That was actu-
ally the first time in high
school he’s ridden a kid out
to win so that was new. Nor-
mally he’s the one trying to
get out. He did a great job
flattening the kid out and
just riding tough there at the
end.”
After neither wrestler se-
cured the win in the first
one-minute overtime period
Gardner and Nellis battled it
out in the two 30-second pe-
riods. Gardner started down
first and escaped for a one-
point lead. Then in the final
30-second overtime period
Gardner made sure to keep
Nellis down to secure the
bout victory and finalize
Beach’s 57-9 win.
Despite the big win Bower
knows there are still things
to be worked on for the
Gulls to keep securing victo-
ries.
“Our biggest thing – we
just need to get better hand
control,” he explained. “If
you get hand control on bot-
tom, you get hand control on
your feet at all times, you’re
going to get in bad situations
but you’ll be able to wrestle
out of them because you
have the kid’s hands.”
He also touched on how
this past weekend’s weather
played a role in limiting
practice time for the
wrestlers. Bower always
does his best to remind his
athletes to stay active re-
gardless of the situation.
“That’s what is so tough
with wrestling. We’re in
midterms right now so kids
are studying and then the
snow always screws us up,”
stated Bower. “If we can’t
see them – get a workout in.
Go shovel snow, go for a run
or do something so you can
keep yourself in shape.”
The win came after a 34-33
loss to Middletown South
last Thursday. In that match
Crivelli, Jarvis, Rupp and
Jude Lovgren had pins for
Beach.
Yesterday the team trav-
eled to wrestle Holmdel but
the match occurred too late
for today’s paper. Check

continue to improve their
time, individually and as a
team.
“Ian Knapp and Cortlandt
Dalik stepped up big time for
us tonight in the 4x400-relay
running the second and fourth
fastest legs of the entire sea-
son, setting the stage for a
new group of runners to have
a chance at breaking the
school record for the second
time this season,” stated
Colonna.
The team now looks ahead
to the state sectionals meet on
Feb. 6. Colonna looks to the
leadership of Ehrhardt, Peters
and Alex Stupar to help ex-
tend the Panthers’ season.
