TRIBUTE TO KEITH "MILES O'TOOLE" GRANTLEY
The UQAFC mourns the loss of one of the
Club’s true stalwarts, Keith Grantley, who
typically fought until the final siren before
losing a long battle with cancer on November
9, 2020.
Keith - known by his nickname Miles O’Toole
– joined the Club in 1966 from Coorparoo and
quickly stamped his strong presence both on
and off the field. He longed to play in the
forward line after telling those who would
believe him that he briefly occupied the full
forward role at Coorparoo until a young Jason
Dunstall edged him out and he was snapped up
by Uni at a still undisclosed contract fee.
(Trouble is Dunstall was just 2 years old in
1966. But of course, Keith was a Chartered
Accountant and so can be excused for such
slight inaccuracies in the telling of such a tall
tale).
At Uni he made the Centre Half Back (later
Full Back) positions his own for 10 seasons and
228 Senior Games including the memorable
1966 premiership side. He was awarded a
University Half Blue in 1970, won the SQAFA
Best and Fairest Medal in 1970 and 1971 when
he captained the senior side, took out the Club
Best and Fairest in 1972 and was runner up in
1970 and 1975.
The 1966 Grand Final victory at the Gabba
against Sandgate was a fiery encounter
officiated by a single umpire in those days
(Tom Macarthur). Sandgate could not match
their more skilful Uni opponents and went
“the biff” with the umpire struggling to keep
control. In an unprecedented situation Police
had to be called onto the field to restore order
after 2 broken jaws – one for each side.
Following the match, after playing a
significant role in the victory, Keith was heard
to say:
- “I like it when it’s a bit rough out there”!
Keith always played his football tough, fair
and fearless and prided himself in his ability
to take a mark over the top of an ugly pack
instead of going for a spoil. So much so at
training, when he was busting packs and
sending his own teammates flying in all
directions, he would hold the ball aloft after
another contested mark and jokingly urge his
bruised opponents to dub him “The Claw.”
He was a leader off the field as well. He was
the founder of the AFL Independent Schools
Association and President for 10 years from
1992 until 2002. His work and advocacy was
central to Aussie Rules finally being adopted
into GPS and AIC schools in Brisbane which,
until then, had resisted any intrusion into
their Rugby Union strongholds.
Post football, Keith became a prominent
member of the Hash House Harriers in
Brisbane, maintained his fitness with strong
cross country runs and a constant willingness
to demonstrate his one arm push ups to
unsuspecting attendees at any Uni Club
function.
With or without any request at such functions
he could suddenly launch into a
demonstration of his side-step, fend, dummy
and further side-step followed by a twirl of
hips to shrug another attempted tackle to kick
the best goal of his Uni career off his non-
preferred side.
In his time with the Club and throughout his
life, Keith had the support of his loving wife,
Jan, who could belt out a rendition of the Club
victory song with the very best.
Jan was stoic, as was Keith, during his period
of illness. The Club wishes to record its tribute
to Jan and to sons Doug and Lachlan. They
were there with Jan and grandchildren
Scarlett, Felix, Donald and Myles for Keith’s
final hours. Always a close, private and proud
family.

A super win! The team played well
throughout, yet testament to the tight
competition of our league, came away
with only a small victory.
A fast start – within 30 seconds Jake ‘Data’
Turner tapped straight down to Brock
‘Fridge’ Thompson, who booted forward
to debutant Bryce McMahon who duly
converted – continued throughout the
first quarter, with five goals to two a just
reward at ¼ time. Then 10 minutes of near
horizontal rain and wind, which had
Victorians in Fridge and Michael ‘Prickles’
Randone questioning their decision to
move north (“I should’ve just stayed in
Geelong”). From 24 up at ¾ time, we
narrowly held on, with skipper Jordan
‘Scooper’ Williams kicking the sealer and
then one more for good measure.
While Damian ‘Circuit’ Ashby provided
the focal point up front, the Blue Deck
combined for four goals and many of our
best with The Fridge, Bespoke
Constructions’ Seamus ‘Shagga’ Tanna
and MVO Catering Solutions’ Dan ‘Bull’
Watson. Elsewhere, the constant forward
pressure of our mosquito patrol – Bryce,
Sidd Rajesh, Liam McBrien and Josh ‘Mr
BT’ Beattie – was important, especially in
view of Charlie Pershouse’s trampoline
hands.
The win was rightly rewarded with a long
weekend, featuring a few Red Lion Lagers
at Alex Binks’ favourite sponsor, Ballistic
Beer Co. Jake Ralston sadly departs to join
fellow serviceman Cam Smith for a week
of camping, nonetheless, we look forward
to Past Players Day next Saturday back at
home at Oval 2.

Round 4 saw the Red Lions journey down
the M1 to Springwood. On what was a
very grim day out at Springwood the
reserves went in with high expectations of
claiming a 2-1 record. The first quarter
was an arm wrestle, with a strong wind
blowing, the Red Lions struggled with
kicking in front of goal, only registering 2
minor scores in the first quarter. After
some strong words from coach Alex
Binks, the momentum changed and the
red lions put on a clinic in the last 10
minutes of the second quarter.
This was contributed to Matt Cornelius
who put his head over the footy all day
allowing for the red lions to take the game
on. Michel Westerhuis and Alex Bennett
both kicked their first goals for the club
and the Red Lions went in up by a single
minor score at the main break.
The pumas started well in the 3rd quarter
but couldn’t capitalise on forward 50
entries with Nick Bennett, Luke Bennell
and Will Delchau proving themselves as a
wall of defence only allowing for 1 major
in the premiership quarter. At the other
end of the ground, it was a different story
with David Milne returning from injury
and booting 2 fantastic goals to put the
Lions up 23-31 heading into the final
break.
A howling wind on their backs in the last
quarter the pumas were just clawing over
the line by a single goal. The ball did not
enter the lions forward 50 in the final
term. A very stoppage heavy final term
made open space hard to come by.
Despite the narrow loss a lot of positives
came out of the game. The backline which
consisted of Tim Carius, Nate Bianchi and
Joel Ashby held very strong and started to
gel together as a unit. Nick Martin and
Henry McLachlan ran all day on the
flanks, backed up by a very strong
midfield group of Connor Wadsworth
and Will Palmer. George Clinton and
Tom Anderson made plenty of what they
could in the forward line when it came in.
Sean Westerhuis came away with another
BOG after toiling hard in the ruck all day
with Nick Kennedy also polling in the
best.
The reserves next take on Beenleigh at
Oval 2 on Saturday for Old Boys’ day on
the 8th of May where we hope to get back
into the winners circle. Keen to see you all
there

After a tough loss at home last weekend,
the Senior girls came out fired up and
ready to make a statement against
Yeronga.
Buoyed by the inclusion of Brisbane
Lion Maria Moloney into an already
classy midfield, the girls jumped out to a
14-0 lead at quarter time.
Yeronga settled into the game in the 2nd
but a strong performance as always from
Henning, Fitzpatrick and the backline
crew helped steady the ship as they
consistently repelled the Devils' scoring
attempts with strong wins in one-on-one
contests.
It was only some inaccuracy in front of
goal preventing the Red Lionesses' eight
extra scoring shots from causing more
hurt on the scoreboard, with the
halftime lead of 13 points not quite
reflecting the strength of the first half
showing.
As the game progressed, the class of the
midfield showed through with Dyer
hitting targets off both feet from the
wing, Seton defying her young age to hit
packs with intensity and Hunt providing
an ever-reliable option out the back of
contests.
Practice put into the defensive zone also
paid dividends as Yeronga struggled to
clear the ball after minor scores. Despite
a quick Devils' goal at the start of the
final quarter, the girls soon reasserted
themselves, leading to a decisive victory,
8.14.62 to 4.3.27.
Wigan was tireless, rucking out the vast
majority of the game and providing
aerial contests all night. Aggressive
pressure across all areas of the ground
led to extra opportunities, with Yoshida-
Martin, Hunt, Brennan and Benjamin
amongst the goal scorers as weight of
inside 50s began to show.

It was a tough day on the paddock for the
Ressy girls. With their second loss of the
season the girls are just holding on to the
ladder lead with Coops and Maroochydore
hot on their heels. Saturday's game against
Yeronga saw a stacked team put the UQ
girls under the pump, but showcased what
an outstanding backline we have.
Jac Russel's professional netball hands in
the backline were a godsend! Amy Suthers
(acting captian) was a boss on the field,
leading the girls from the back! Our baby
B (Belinda White) read the play like a
champ, continuously feeding the ball out
of the danger zone. Earning her BOG.
Despite the huge effort it just wasn’t our
day. The Ressy girls are keen to reset and
put in the hard yards this week for the big
home game this weekend. The girls are
hoping to bounce back with a big win
against Maroochydore. Come at us.

One of the strong aspects of this team
during this season has been its camaraderie
and bond. This has been on display during
practice and it has been consistently shown
during the season so far.
On a wet and damp Friday night, the uni
boys' resolve and mental resiliency stood
out against a Coorparoo outfit hellbent on
continuing an upper hand they have had
over this uni team in recent years. But this
time it was different.
This time you had big Jack Fulham and
Cory Johnson dominate the ruck and at
their feet were slick On ballers Wills
McCullough, Sully Grevis-James and a
bigger body in Olly Smith.
The defence were resolute, hard hitting,
and communicated very well with each
other all night. The forwardline presented
well and pressured when they didn't have
the ball at hand. Pilko had a blinder on the
wing and also going back into defence to
cover. He kicked 2 crucial goals to keep the
scoreboard ticking along for UQ
throughout the night.
At three-quarter time, the game was still
up for grabs. Coach Woody implored the
boys to stay mentally tough in the
conditions, go harder at the contest and
bring it home.
The last quarter was amazing to be part
of. The boys went harder at the contest,
threw themselves into the tackles and at
the ball and kept grinding along.
Coorparoo could not move the ball
swiftly at all before they would be
wrapped up in a tackle from a Red Lion
jumper.
As the final siren sounded, it was a
feeling of accomplishment rather than
euphoria as we know it's only early on in
the season but it was great to be able to
continue to build on what we have been
working on. It was a great character
building win for UQ!

Hamish, or ‘Quiche‘ Lorraine as he is more
affectionately known, has been a fantastic
servant of the club since joining the UQ
'Bulldogs' Colts as an 18 year old in 2013.
Beginning his senior football in the reserves,
he has developed his game substantially over
the past few seasons to become a mainstay in
our Senior Men’s team. At his best, Quiche is
tackling hard, dashing off half-back, breaking
lines and using the ball well, often finding
himself among our top performers.
Congratulations on 100 games for the club,
Quiche. It’s a testament to your loyalty and
hard work and we wish you all the best as you
run out against Beenleigh this weekend!
Congratulations!
