JBS v Wilmslow 1st XV | Won 33-19
JBS put on a great display against Wilmslow 1st XV on Buskholme in dry conditions. The first
half in particular was very impressive as Sedbergh played with real speed and tempo which the
visitors struggled to live with.
The Sedbergh pack provided strong front foot ball for the backs with some physical carries and
a great offloading game to open up a commanding lead. Wilmslow came back into the match
in the second half with a period of good play, but ultimately the damage was done and JBS
held on for a strong victory against 1st XV opposition.
JBS @ Durham U18 Tens Tournament | 3rd Place
A JBS L6th squad travelled to Durham eager to test themselves against Northern first team
U18A opposition. In what was a brilliant experience and day of rugby in extremely windy and
tough conditions Sedbergh beat Bradford Grammar 24-12 in the first match. The second
match of the afternoon already looked like the group decider as we took on a very physical RGS
Newcastle Squad. In a very close and competitive match RGS capitalised on two key moments
in the game to score from close range in a deserved narrow victory. Sedbergh then bounced
back with two brilliant performances against Ampleforth and Dame Allen’s wining 26-0 & 38-0.
In our final match of the day we played a strong St Peter’s side who had also finished second
overall in their pool matches. In what was the performance of the tournament Sedbergh from
minute one were relentless in both attack and defence. Our intensity, patience and execution
on attack was outstanding as we raced out to an early 17-0 lead with some brilliant attacking
play. St Peter then had an exhausting three minute period on attack where they threw
everything they had at us but desperate and committed Sedbergh defence kept them out
with eventually a big turnover and quick movement of the ball to space saw another length
of the field try for Sedbergh in injury time of the first half. The second half was much of the
same as we turned more pressure into points with three further tries to win 43-0. This was a
very impressive performance to end a great day of learning and smiles on faces for this young
squad.
JBS v Kirkby Lonsdale U18A | Won 17-5
A great defensive display laid the platform for a young JBS squad against much older
opposition on BH1. Sedbergh’s defence held strong for sixty five minutes and absorbed wave
after wave of opposition attack. Two second half tries from Nathan B & Billy B secured the
victory as Sedbergh capitalised on front foot ball with great handling and execution into space.
Kirkby deservedly scored a try with five minutes to go but with time running out Sedbergh
closed out the victory. The was a great win in extremely tough playing conditions.
Netball
2nd VII v Pocklington 1st VII | Lost 29-44
The game started slowly with neither team gaining much ground, at 8-8 after the first quarter
all was to play for. With increasing support for the Pocklington 1st we quietened down,
rhythm slowed and Pocklington took the lead at half time. The second half kicked off with
exceptional shooting and teamwork between Anya S. (GS) and Sami L. (GA) and the whole
team really began to play well. Into the final quarter although tired we played cohesively
and brought back a few goals to finish the match on a strong. We may have lost the game,
but our sportsmanship and morale remained high and we walked away feeling proud of our
performance.

Swimming Colours awarded to Finn C & Lucy M
3rd VII v Pocklington 2nd VII | Won 42-12
Following a three hour coach journey the first few minutes of play were fast and frantic, taking
us some time to settle into the game. By the end of the quarter however, we kept a positive
attitude, shot well and defended admirably. In the second quarter Pocklington did not score
a single goal; in the third we continued to defend ‘like ninjas’ and score not only off our own
centre pass but often converting off our interceptions too. The final quarter was slow but
steady., however we kept Pocklington at bay to win the final quarter 10-3. Well done to all the
girls for a fantastic performance; the unbeaten season continues.
U16B VII v Pocklington U16A | Won 48-12
The U16B played one of their best games to date. They moved the ball effortlessly through the
court, setting up early and rotating seamlessly through the defence. Each quarter the team
built upon their early six goal lead. The second quarter saw some great interceptions from Alice
B. and Polina W. shot with precision and accuracy to give Sedbergh a remarkable 26-9 lead
at half time. The team continued into final half with composure and focus pushing hard until
the final whistle. All players should be commended on their grit, positivity, and teamwork. Well
done on a fantastic game.
1st VII v Ashville | Won 28-9
The 1st VII are to be congratulated on the resilience shown during this fixture and their ability
to stay focused on the task at hand despite the uncertainty of start time, match length, as
well as injuries before and during the game itself. In what was a great physical encounter -
Grace E, Kenza B. and Freya N. in particular standing up to a good amount of contest within
the shooting circle - the team were able to produce some perfect passages of play. Hollie S. at
centre and Annie H. at WA were an unbeatable duo at the centre passes, with Annie showing
sublime agility to cross the line free of at least one and more often than not two defenders.
The defensive partnership of Katie W. and Bronwen S. continues to go from strength to
strength, with Katie now looking perfectly at home flying out of the circle to intercept the
ball and Bronwen dictating her GA’s play to ensure she can create some strong two-handed
interceptions for herself. Special mention to Ava B. for joining us half-way through the match
from the 2nd VII to put in another very strong and assured performance in the WD position.
2nd VII v Ashville | Won 28-20
Sedbergh 2nd VII travelled to Ashville College to play a block fixture. They started off fierce and
competitive playing skilfully and really sticking on our players. The ball was swiftly going from
net to net and it was a very close first quarter with a score of 9-6 to Sedbergh. Starting the
second quarter slowly gave Ashville side an early advantage of 5 goals. It was slowly becoming
their game but through the resilience and strong teamwork from the Sedbergh side we came
back into the game after some seamless interceptions made by Hannah .t and Romilly N.
supported through centre court to the shooters where we were suddenly back in the game
with only 2 goals down after the third quarter. As the final quarter came, we knew we needed
to get some early interceptions and have them converted to goal in order to win. All the players
on court showed true determination turning over ball after ball and getting it to our shooters
Heather B. and Anya S. whose shooting statistics were second to none as a pair. The game
concluded with a 28 - 20 win to Sedbergh.
U15A v Ashville | Won 20-5
The U15A VII played a tough match against Ashville but perseverance, determination and full-
court defence gave Sedbergh the edge. The squad of nine players worked hard to maximise
possession and create goal scoring opportunities. The first third saw shooters Pippa R. and Evie
R. work well to lead, draw, and outwit a tight defence. Whilst Emma D. and Kaia F-S. denied
space and maximised rebound opportunities. In the second Eliza B., Sadie P. and Hattie N.
created good through court movement whilst pressurising and forcing errors. In the final
third it was a real team effort with all players taking to court, with true Sedbergh style the girls
adapted quickly to the changes and navigated their way to a 20-5 win. Well done to all the girls
for a fantastic performance and a big thank you to the parents for their support.
U15B v Ashville | Won 21-4
This was a great match from every single player. 21-4 is testament to the huge effort of all.
There was great leadership from both ends of the court with captain, Bella S., playing well at
GK and vice-captain Tamsin S., controlling the game and shooting very well at GA/GS. The
game started well with some excellent feeds into the circle from player of the match, Joely H.,
Ru D. also put a lot of energy into her time at centre. The second third continued on an upward
trajectory with a lot of good interceptions at the defensive end and only one Ashville goal
scored. The final third saw a few players playing out of position but we maintained our lead to
win 21-4.
U14 VII V Ashville | Won 14-8
This was a delight of a netball match. The U14 VII continue to be beset by injury and absence,
however new players are stepping up seamlessly and the whole squad continues to adapt
to any and all combinations or positions thrown at them. Ashville fielded a strong side and it
was a low scoring first quarter as both teams settled into the match. However the excellent
defensive pairing of Sonia G. and Annie C. soon showed it’s worth, with Sonia winning the ball
on countless occasions and passing off safely to the steady hands of Annie. Both girls fought
hard to win all available rebounds and the mid-court combinations of Hattie S, Izzy F, Daisy
C and Elise B. improved in their ability to take the ball through court cleanly and with good
timing as the match went on. The end of the third quarter saw Ashville come right back at as
and score five unanswered goals. However, the Sedbergh girls showed great composure and
held their nerve to re-group at the start of the final quarter. Katie W. and Erin R. did extremely
well to shoot with calmness and accuracy, despite the pressure of both the defence and the
close score-line, allowing Sedbergh to build steadily to a 14-8 win.
Girls’ Hockey
U15 XI County Finals | Champions
The girls travelled up to Austin Friars for finals day. Playing two games the girls aged
fantastically. Millie J-P was a powerhouse down the right wing all afternoon. While all the
forwards got in on the goals. Sedbergh secured the title in fine style.
1st XI v Durham 2nd XI
On paper this was just the girls’ third defeat of the season. However, it was their best
performance against a tough high-quality opposition. Playing intelligent committed and
skillfully, Hockey Sedbergh were extremely unlucky to fall to one of only two shots on target
by the students. A notable mention to Y10 Hattie N. making her debut and playing with quiet
assurance.
Boys’ Hockey
1st XI v Bolton School | Won 6-1
The boys displayed excellent professionalism and team work to comprehensively beat a
talented Bolton team. James P. was once again aggressive and threatening up front while
George B. put in his best performance of the season at Centre Back. Sedbergh playing and
tactically astute half pitch press consistently turned ball over to hit Bolton on the counter.
Leading 3-1 at half time they scored three more in an entertaining and impressive display.
2nd XI v Bradford Grammar 1st XI | Lost 5-1
In a tough fixture the 2nd XI will consider themselves unfortunate to be 2-1 down at half time
after an excellent first half display that saw them dominate the first twenty minutes but fail
to add to their opening goal despite creating a number of golden opportunities. At the same
time the midfield had kept Bradford’s Futures Cup forward under check. However too much
ball carrying took its toll as the midfield ran out of steam and were unable to shackle this
player who scored two outstanding individual goals in the final ten minutes of the half - the
first a roofed forehand strike on the spin and the second a dribble through the inside left
channel beating three players before tucking the ball into the bottom corner. Unfortunately
the second half was more of the same. Sedbergh, with only one substitute, were unable to
keep the intensity high and left too much space for Bradford’s forward who scored three
outstanding backhand strikes despite the best efforts of Will C. who man-marked the player
for the whole 30 minutes and limited him to only three opportunities! A very good experience
for the boys to understand how to manage their energy levels against a solid side, particularly
with the under 16 and 18 North West finals’ days this week, in which both teams play five 30
minute games in less than four hours.
3rd XI v Bolton School 2nd XI | Lost 1-0
Quite how our 3rd team (playing their first ever match) lost this game will puzzle those
watching for years to come. This scratch team at time played some quite memorable passages
of play. Moving the ball with the now trademark Sedbergh ease the boys consistently created
space and extra numbers in key areas but just couldn’t find the back of the net.
Bolton by contrast although also full of spirit didn’t manage a shot on target all game. Indeed
their goal, coming after 20mins in the first half, was a result of a shot initially going wide,
cruelly deflected past Rufus F. in goal by a Sedbergh stick. The boys fought and fought.
Notably, Louis C. and Harry W. were visible in their efforts while Captain Taizio O. worked
tirelessly down the right. Sadly, the gods did not will it today.
U14A v Ashville | Lost 3-0
The boys travelled to Ashville, playing a game in awful conditions. Although the score line may
appear disappointing the performance was another big step in the right direction for this
inexperienced team. Will B. was dynamic upfront while Jamie T. in midfield and Nico J. were
stabilising presences.
U15B v Austin Friars | Won 3-2
In a very competitive game the under 15Bs competed well against an Austin Friars side that
were unlucky to be on the wrong side of the result given the dominance of possession and
opportunities to score. Sedbergh only had three good scoring opportunities and to their credit
they converted two to force a win based on strong defence, soaking up pressure and playing
on the break.
1st XI v Ashville | Won 3-2
On Saturday, the 1st XI had a very competitive game against Ashville in very wet and windy
conditions. Sedbergh started the game strong, maintaining sustained pressure on Ashville’s
goal however, Asheville got the first goal after a quick counter attack lead to a short corner
where they punished us. Sedbergh responded well, scoring a beautifully well worked team
goal which was finished off by James in the second half Ashville continued to be a threat on
the counter attack. Sedbergh however took the lead through Christian and looked to be seeing
off the game nicely. Until a quick counter led to a penalty flick after Angus took the man before
the ball. Ashville placed their penalty flick nicely and Sedbergh went searching for a late win.
After a brilliant move and a good piece of skill tom slotted the ball in the bottom corner off of
his reverse. After this Sedbergh managed the game much better, not allowing Ashville to build
up a sustained attack by breaking up play and slowing the game down. The game ended as a
hard fought 3-2 win to Sedbergh.
2nd XI v Ashville | Draw 2-2
In wet and windy conditions the 2nd XI had a very competitive game against a physically
stronger Ashville team who took the lead twice before Sedbergh responded through goals
from Nathan B. and Harry W.
Sedbergh’s goalkeeper Alister P. made a number of excellent saves to keep the score line to 1-1
at half time, with the home team struggling to move the ball and too often losing possession
running onto the forehand of their opponents. Despite this Sedbergh continued to work hard
and were indebted to a fine deflection off a short corner from Nathan B. to level the score just
before half time.
However the second half saw a much more fluent performance as the boys moved the ball
well and they were unfortunate to go 2-1 down against the run of play midway through the
half. Jack B., Bruno F., Ed B. and Fergus H. were stringing their passes together well and a slick
move from defence to attack in three passes saw Harry Wells beat the Ashville keeper with a
well struck reverse hit to level the score late in the half. Sedbergh continued to press for the
winner but were unable to force the win.
Running
King Henry Relays, War Memorial Park, Coventry
24 pupils set off for Coventry to take part in the 50th Anniversary of the King Henry Relays.
Some 14,000 athletes have taken part in this prestigious event. With Dan R. missing, we
decided to stack the A team with our fastest runners first and try to hold on. Fraser S. led off
and ran a tremendous leg around the 3.7km course. His time of 10:52 was the second fastest in
the history of the race. To put this into context, the likes of Sebastian Coe (former World Record
holder and Olympic champion) ran 11:20; Alasdair Brownlee (Olympic Gold Medal winning
Triathlete) ran 11:13 and his brother Jonathan Brownlee (Olympic Gold Medal winning triathlete)
ran 11:08. An astonishing performance which saw Fraser awarded with the Mark Randall
Trophy. The rest of the boys ran strongly but we gradually slipped down the field, eventually
finishing in 10th place.
The girls race set off 5 minutes after the boys. The stand-out performance of the day from our
girls was the A team anchor leg run by Jemima B.. She ran 13:50. This is the fastest time ever
run by a Sedbergh girl. She helped the A team to 12th place – this was the third fastest time by
a Sedbergh girls team. The strength in depth we have among the girls was shown by the time
recorded by the Sedbergh B team (17th) was the second fastest by a Sedbergh B team.
Everyone had an enjoyable day and we look forward to going back again next year.
Northern Schools Inter-County Cross Country Championship 2022, Stewart Park,
Cleveland
There are four age group competitions (Minor Yr7), Junior (Yr8/9), Intermediate (Yr10/11) & Senior
(Yr12/13) for male and female runners. Five counties take part (Cumbria, Northumberland,
Durham, North Yorkshire and Cleveland). Sedbergh School contributed 24 pupils to the
Cumbria team (19 Senior School; 5 Prep School).
In chilly, strong winds, the highlight of the day was a gripping race between Fraser S. and Max
C. from Cleveland. The two runners went stride for stride throughout the 6.2km race. After 5km
they were still neck and neck. Fraser put a surge in going up the final slope but Max held on.
They descended together then Fraser put in a kick with about 500m to go and finally broke
the resistance from the Cleveland athlete for a thrilling win. Dan R. had a challenging week in
the build up to this event but managed to put in an excellent performance in the Intermediate
boys race to secure a hard won third place.
In a close competition Cumbria Girls (315) were victorious; they were just ahead of
Northumberland (319). Cumbria boys (324) were beaten into second place by Northumberland
(310) No one county dominated any event so every position proved important and overall,
Cumbria (639) were just squeezed into second place by Northumberland (629).
Cumbria Team selectors use the results from a combination of the County XC Championships
and the Northern Inter-Counties to pick the Cumbria team to take part in the National Schools’
XC Championships in Tonbridge, Kent on 19th March. With eight runners selected in each age
group, we await the final decision from the selectors.
Finishing in the top 8 in Cumbria were:
Senior Boys: Fraser S. (1st), Sam G. (5th)
Senior Girls: Jemima B. (5th), Alicia N. (7th), Holly H. (8th)
Intermediate Boys: Dan R. (1st)
Junior Girls: Lucy H. (4th)
Minor Girls: Julia F. (5th), Sophie N. (6th)

Basketball
1st Team v QES Kirkby Lonsdale | Won 53-16
Although the score looks very one sided, the match certainly wasn’t. The QES defence was
much improved from the first match of our ‘triple-header’, and they gave as good as they got
in a highly competitive fixture. Our defence was at times simply superb with Max A and Leo W
leading the way, but where we were a class apart was in our scoring. It wasn’t just the colossus
Finn B who scored all our points (although he was the highest points scorer!), points came
from throughout the team with Ben G scoring plenty, Tom P getting on the score sheet, and
debutant Archie C bagging a few, among others. Our captain Kevin G gave great advice at half
time, and we played even better in the second half. Rufus L once again tore the opposition
ragged with his high-octane attacking game, Aviv L was solid as usual, and the utterly sublime
Keagan J dribbled like the great Steph Curry, and scored points so easily he made the basket
look as if it was 10 foot wide; everything he threw went in. The referee, aghast after the first
fixture due to the very poor quality of play, had nothing but praise for the team at the end of
this one. The boys were superb.
Soccer
1st XI v Barnard Castle | Won 3-2
Sedbergh took on Barnard Castle for the first home fixture of the season. The conditions were
torrential but play took place on time with two strong sides on display. Sedbergh immediately
went 1-0 up within 5 minutes , a goal from vice-captain Theo D., Sedbergh soon scored a 2nd
this time Jake D. on the scoresheet. On the brink of half time Jake scored a 3rd to make it 3-0
Sedbergh. After a quick turnaround at half time Barnard Castle immediately struck back 2
good goals putting the pressure back on Sedbergh. Sedbergh held out until the final whistle
winning 3-2 in extremely difficult conditions.
Swimming
U18 & U15 v Ampleforth | Won
On Saturday 5th February, we saw the home leg of the Ampleforth swimming fixture. This
home event was a great opportunity for some of our newer members of the team to get
involved in either guest races or as point counting swimmers.
From start to finish Sedbergh wowed with both fitness and finesse. Sophia T. and Kaiden
S.’s IMs were exceptionally skilled with Kaidan’s strength powering into a clear lead right
from the start. Polina W., Jemima H., Max M. and Harry B. had strong debuts and swam with
determination from the start of their events. Sedbergh won 18 out of the 19 events on the day
and were clear winners.
As ever, Fenn C. and Lucy M. led the teams superbly. They were excellent hosts and were able
to slot the teams in and out of events to ensure that we made full use of the skills amongst us.
Fenn and Lucy ably won their own individual events and have been dedicated members of
the swimming team since their arrival at Sedbergh. It is a pleasure to award them both their
swimming colours.
Fives
Northern Schools’ Tournament (Singles Day)
Sedbergh Fives team travelled to Durham to play in the Northern Schools Fives Tournament.
Most players had never played a competitive game of Fives and those that had played before,
had not played for over a year.
In the U16 draw, Ollie G. won the tournament and Matthew C. was runner up. Lukas M. won
the plate competition to make it a clean sweep for Sedbergh. In the U18s competition, James
G and Archie G reached the semi-finals but were both defeated by players from the City of
Durham Fives club. In the plate competition, Rhys R was also knocked out at the semi-final
stage.
Northern Schools’ Tournament (Doubles Day)
In today’s Fives doubles event, James G & Archie G finished as runners up in the U18
competition. Ollie G and Lukas M were runners up in the U16 competition.
A good weekend competitive Fives played in exactly the right way.

Sedbergh School Sports Report 31 January 06 February 2022

  • 1.
  • 2. SPORTS RESULTS Rugby JBS v Wilmslow 1st XV | Won 33-19 JBS put on a great display against Wilmslow 1st XV on Buskholme in dry conditions. The first half in particular was very impressive as Sedbergh played with real speed and tempo which the visitors struggled to live with. The Sedbergh pack provided strong front foot ball for the backs with some physical carries and a great offloading game to open up a commanding lead. Wilmslow came back into the match in the second half with a period of good play, but ultimately the damage was done and JBS held on for a strong victory against 1st XV opposition. JBS @ Durham U18 Tens Tournament | 3rd Place A JBS L6th squad travelled to Durham eager to test themselves against Northern first team U18A opposition. In what was a brilliant experience and day of rugby in extremely windy and tough conditions Sedbergh beat Bradford Grammar 24-12 in the first match. The second match of the afternoon already looked like the group decider as we took on a very physical RGS Newcastle Squad. In a very close and competitive match RGS capitalised on two key moments in the game to score from close range in a deserved narrow victory. Sedbergh then bounced back with two brilliant performances against Ampleforth and Dame Allen’s wining 26-0 & 38-0. In our final match of the day we played a strong St Peter’s side who had also finished second overall in their pool matches. In what was the performance of the tournament Sedbergh from minute one were relentless in both attack and defence. Our intensity, patience and execution on attack was outstanding as we raced out to an early 17-0 lead with some brilliant attacking play. St Peter then had an exhausting three minute period on attack where they threw everything they had at us but desperate and committed Sedbergh defence kept them out with eventually a big turnover and quick movement of the ball to space saw another length of the field try for Sedbergh in injury time of the first half. The second half was much of the same as we turned more pressure into points with three further tries to win 43-0. This was a very impressive performance to end a great day of learning and smiles on faces for this young squad. JBS v Kirkby Lonsdale U18A | Won 17-5 A great defensive display laid the platform for a young JBS squad against much older opposition on BH1. Sedbergh’s defence held strong for sixty five minutes and absorbed wave after wave of opposition attack. Two second half tries from Nathan B & Billy B secured the victory as Sedbergh capitalised on front foot ball with great handling and execution into space. Kirkby deservedly scored a try with five minutes to go but with time running out Sedbergh closed out the victory. The was a great win in extremely tough playing conditions. Netball 2nd VII v Pocklington 1st VII | Lost 29-44 The game started slowly with neither team gaining much ground, at 8-8 after the first quarter all was to play for. With increasing support for the Pocklington 1st we quietened down, rhythm slowed and Pocklington took the lead at half time. The second half kicked off with exceptional shooting and teamwork between Anya S. (GS) and Sami L. (GA) and the whole team really began to play well. Into the final quarter although tired we played cohesively and brought back a few goals to finish the match on a strong. We may have lost the game, but our sportsmanship and morale remained high and we walked away feeling proud of our performance. Special Mentions Swimming Colours awarded to Finn C & Lucy M
  • 3. 3rd VII v Pocklington 2nd VII | Won 42-12 Following a three hour coach journey the first few minutes of play were fast and frantic, taking us some time to settle into the game. By the end of the quarter however, we kept a positive attitude, shot well and defended admirably. In the second quarter Pocklington did not score a single goal; in the third we continued to defend ‘like ninjas’ and score not only off our own centre pass but often converting off our interceptions too. The final quarter was slow but steady., however we kept Pocklington at bay to win the final quarter 10-3. Well done to all the girls for a fantastic performance; the unbeaten season continues. U16B VII v Pocklington U16A | Won 48-12 The U16B played one of their best games to date. They moved the ball effortlessly through the court, setting up early and rotating seamlessly through the defence. Each quarter the team built upon their early six goal lead. The second quarter saw some great interceptions from Alice B. and Polina W. shot with precision and accuracy to give Sedbergh a remarkable 26-9 lead at half time. The team continued into final half with composure and focus pushing hard until the final whistle. All players should be commended on their grit, positivity, and teamwork. Well done on a fantastic game. 1st VII v Ashville | Won 28-9 The 1st VII are to be congratulated on the resilience shown during this fixture and their ability to stay focused on the task at hand despite the uncertainty of start time, match length, as well as injuries before and during the game itself. In what was a great physical encounter - Grace E, Kenza B. and Freya N. in particular standing up to a good amount of contest within the shooting circle - the team were able to produce some perfect passages of play. Hollie S. at centre and Annie H. at WA were an unbeatable duo at the centre passes, with Annie showing sublime agility to cross the line free of at least one and more often than not two defenders. The defensive partnership of Katie W. and Bronwen S. continues to go from strength to strength, with Katie now looking perfectly at home flying out of the circle to intercept the ball and Bronwen dictating her GA’s play to ensure she can create some strong two-handed interceptions for herself. Special mention to Ava B. for joining us half-way through the match from the 2nd VII to put in another very strong and assured performance in the WD position.
  • 4. 2nd VII v Ashville | Won 28-20 Sedbergh 2nd VII travelled to Ashville College to play a block fixture. They started off fierce and competitive playing skilfully and really sticking on our players. The ball was swiftly going from net to net and it was a very close first quarter with a score of 9-6 to Sedbergh. Starting the second quarter slowly gave Ashville side an early advantage of 5 goals. It was slowly becoming their game but through the resilience and strong teamwork from the Sedbergh side we came back into the game after some seamless interceptions made by Hannah .t and Romilly N. supported through centre court to the shooters where we were suddenly back in the game with only 2 goals down after the third quarter. As the final quarter came, we knew we needed to get some early interceptions and have them converted to goal in order to win. All the players on court showed true determination turning over ball after ball and getting it to our shooters Heather B. and Anya S. whose shooting statistics were second to none as a pair. The game concluded with a 28 - 20 win to Sedbergh. U15A v Ashville | Won 20-5 The U15A VII played a tough match against Ashville but perseverance, determination and full- court defence gave Sedbergh the edge. The squad of nine players worked hard to maximise possession and create goal scoring opportunities. The first third saw shooters Pippa R. and Evie R. work well to lead, draw, and outwit a tight defence. Whilst Emma D. and Kaia F-S. denied space and maximised rebound opportunities. In the second Eliza B., Sadie P. and Hattie N. created good through court movement whilst pressurising and forcing errors. In the final third it was a real team effort with all players taking to court, with true Sedbergh style the girls adapted quickly to the changes and navigated their way to a 20-5 win. Well done to all the girls for a fantastic performance and a big thank you to the parents for their support. U15B v Ashville | Won 21-4 This was a great match from every single player. 21-4 is testament to the huge effort of all. There was great leadership from both ends of the court with captain, Bella S., playing well at GK and vice-captain Tamsin S., controlling the game and shooting very well at GA/GS. The game started well with some excellent feeds into the circle from player of the match, Joely H., Ru D. also put a lot of energy into her time at centre. The second third continued on an upward trajectory with a lot of good interceptions at the defensive end and only one Ashville goal scored. The final third saw a few players playing out of position but we maintained our lead to win 21-4. U14 VII V Ashville | Won 14-8 This was a delight of a netball match. The U14 VII continue to be beset by injury and absence, however new players are stepping up seamlessly and the whole squad continues to adapt to any and all combinations or positions thrown at them. Ashville fielded a strong side and it was a low scoring first quarter as both teams settled into the match. However the excellent defensive pairing of Sonia G. and Annie C. soon showed it’s worth, with Sonia winning the ball on countless occasions and passing off safely to the steady hands of Annie. Both girls fought hard to win all available rebounds and the mid-court combinations of Hattie S, Izzy F, Daisy C and Elise B. improved in their ability to take the ball through court cleanly and with good timing as the match went on. The end of the third quarter saw Ashville come right back at as and score five unanswered goals. However, the Sedbergh girls showed great composure and held their nerve to re-group at the start of the final quarter. Katie W. and Erin R. did extremely well to shoot with calmness and accuracy, despite the pressure of both the defence and the close score-line, allowing Sedbergh to build steadily to a 14-8 win. Girls’ Hockey U15 XI County Finals | Champions The girls travelled up to Austin Friars for finals day. Playing two games the girls aged fantastically. Millie J-P was a powerhouse down the right wing all afternoon. While all the forwards got in on the goals. Sedbergh secured the title in fine style.
  • 5. 1st XI v Durham 2nd XI On paper this was just the girls’ third defeat of the season. However, it was their best performance against a tough high-quality opposition. Playing intelligent committed and skillfully, Hockey Sedbergh were extremely unlucky to fall to one of only two shots on target by the students. A notable mention to Y10 Hattie N. making her debut and playing with quiet assurance. Boys’ Hockey 1st XI v Bolton School | Won 6-1 The boys displayed excellent professionalism and team work to comprehensively beat a talented Bolton team. James P. was once again aggressive and threatening up front while George B. put in his best performance of the season at Centre Back. Sedbergh playing and tactically astute half pitch press consistently turned ball over to hit Bolton on the counter. Leading 3-1 at half time they scored three more in an entertaining and impressive display. 2nd XI v Bradford Grammar 1st XI | Lost 5-1 In a tough fixture the 2nd XI will consider themselves unfortunate to be 2-1 down at half time after an excellent first half display that saw them dominate the first twenty minutes but fail to add to their opening goal despite creating a number of golden opportunities. At the same time the midfield had kept Bradford’s Futures Cup forward under check. However too much ball carrying took its toll as the midfield ran out of steam and were unable to shackle this player who scored two outstanding individual goals in the final ten minutes of the half - the first a roofed forehand strike on the spin and the second a dribble through the inside left channel beating three players before tucking the ball into the bottom corner. Unfortunately the second half was more of the same. Sedbergh, with only one substitute, were unable to keep the intensity high and left too much space for Bradford’s forward who scored three outstanding backhand strikes despite the best efforts of Will C. who man-marked the player for the whole 30 minutes and limited him to only three opportunities! A very good experience for the boys to understand how to manage their energy levels against a solid side, particularly with the under 16 and 18 North West finals’ days this week, in which both teams play five 30 minute games in less than four hours.
  • 6. 3rd XI v Bolton School 2nd XI | Lost 1-0 Quite how our 3rd team (playing their first ever match) lost this game will puzzle those watching for years to come. This scratch team at time played some quite memorable passages of play. Moving the ball with the now trademark Sedbergh ease the boys consistently created space and extra numbers in key areas but just couldn’t find the back of the net. Bolton by contrast although also full of spirit didn’t manage a shot on target all game. Indeed their goal, coming after 20mins in the first half, was a result of a shot initially going wide, cruelly deflected past Rufus F. in goal by a Sedbergh stick. The boys fought and fought. Notably, Louis C. and Harry W. were visible in their efforts while Captain Taizio O. worked tirelessly down the right. Sadly, the gods did not will it today. U14A v Ashville | Lost 3-0 The boys travelled to Ashville, playing a game in awful conditions. Although the score line may appear disappointing the performance was another big step in the right direction for this inexperienced team. Will B. was dynamic upfront while Jamie T. in midfield and Nico J. were stabilising presences. U15B v Austin Friars | Won 3-2 In a very competitive game the under 15Bs competed well against an Austin Friars side that were unlucky to be on the wrong side of the result given the dominance of possession and opportunities to score. Sedbergh only had three good scoring opportunities and to their credit they converted two to force a win based on strong defence, soaking up pressure and playing on the break.
  • 7. 1st XI v Ashville | Won 3-2 On Saturday, the 1st XI had a very competitive game against Ashville in very wet and windy conditions. Sedbergh started the game strong, maintaining sustained pressure on Ashville’s goal however, Asheville got the first goal after a quick counter attack lead to a short corner where they punished us. Sedbergh responded well, scoring a beautifully well worked team goal which was finished off by James in the second half Ashville continued to be a threat on the counter attack. Sedbergh however took the lead through Christian and looked to be seeing off the game nicely. Until a quick counter led to a penalty flick after Angus took the man before the ball. Ashville placed their penalty flick nicely and Sedbergh went searching for a late win. After a brilliant move and a good piece of skill tom slotted the ball in the bottom corner off of his reverse. After this Sedbergh managed the game much better, not allowing Ashville to build up a sustained attack by breaking up play and slowing the game down. The game ended as a hard fought 3-2 win to Sedbergh. 2nd XI v Ashville | Draw 2-2 In wet and windy conditions the 2nd XI had a very competitive game against a physically stronger Ashville team who took the lead twice before Sedbergh responded through goals from Nathan B. and Harry W. Sedbergh’s goalkeeper Alister P. made a number of excellent saves to keep the score line to 1-1 at half time, with the home team struggling to move the ball and too often losing possession running onto the forehand of their opponents. Despite this Sedbergh continued to work hard and were indebted to a fine deflection off a short corner from Nathan B. to level the score just before half time. However the second half saw a much more fluent performance as the boys moved the ball well and they were unfortunate to go 2-1 down against the run of play midway through the half. Jack B., Bruno F., Ed B. and Fergus H. were stringing their passes together well and a slick move from defence to attack in three passes saw Harry Wells beat the Ashville keeper with a well struck reverse hit to level the score late in the half. Sedbergh continued to press for the winner but were unable to force the win.
  • 8. Running King Henry Relays, War Memorial Park, Coventry 24 pupils set off for Coventry to take part in the 50th Anniversary of the King Henry Relays. Some 14,000 athletes have taken part in this prestigious event. With Dan R. missing, we decided to stack the A team with our fastest runners first and try to hold on. Fraser S. led off and ran a tremendous leg around the 3.7km course. His time of 10:52 was the second fastest in the history of the race. To put this into context, the likes of Sebastian Coe (former World Record holder and Olympic champion) ran 11:20; Alasdair Brownlee (Olympic Gold Medal winning Triathlete) ran 11:13 and his brother Jonathan Brownlee (Olympic Gold Medal winning triathlete) ran 11:08. An astonishing performance which saw Fraser awarded with the Mark Randall Trophy. The rest of the boys ran strongly but we gradually slipped down the field, eventually finishing in 10th place. The girls race set off 5 minutes after the boys. The stand-out performance of the day from our girls was the A team anchor leg run by Jemima B.. She ran 13:50. This is the fastest time ever run by a Sedbergh girl. She helped the A team to 12th place – this was the third fastest time by a Sedbergh girls team. The strength in depth we have among the girls was shown by the time recorded by the Sedbergh B team (17th) was the second fastest by a Sedbergh B team. Everyone had an enjoyable day and we look forward to going back again next year. Northern Schools Inter-County Cross Country Championship 2022, Stewart Park, Cleveland There are four age group competitions (Minor Yr7), Junior (Yr8/9), Intermediate (Yr10/11) & Senior (Yr12/13) for male and female runners. Five counties take part (Cumbria, Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire and Cleveland). Sedbergh School contributed 24 pupils to the Cumbria team (19 Senior School; 5 Prep School). In chilly, strong winds, the highlight of the day was a gripping race between Fraser S. and Max C. from Cleveland. The two runners went stride for stride throughout the 6.2km race. After 5km they were still neck and neck. Fraser put a surge in going up the final slope but Max held on. They descended together then Fraser put in a kick with about 500m to go and finally broke the resistance from the Cleveland athlete for a thrilling win. Dan R. had a challenging week in the build up to this event but managed to put in an excellent performance in the Intermediate boys race to secure a hard won third place. In a close competition Cumbria Girls (315) were victorious; they were just ahead of Northumberland (319). Cumbria boys (324) were beaten into second place by Northumberland (310) No one county dominated any event so every position proved important and overall, Cumbria (639) were just squeezed into second place by Northumberland (629). Cumbria Team selectors use the results from a combination of the County XC Championships and the Northern Inter-Counties to pick the Cumbria team to take part in the National Schools’ XC Championships in Tonbridge, Kent on 19th March. With eight runners selected in each age group, we await the final decision from the selectors. Finishing in the top 8 in Cumbria were: Senior Boys: Fraser S. (1st), Sam G. (5th) Senior Girls: Jemima B. (5th), Alicia N. (7th), Holly H. (8th) Intermediate Boys: Dan R. (1st) Junior Girls: Lucy H. (4th) Minor Girls: Julia F. (5th), Sophie N. (6th)

Some 14,000 athletes have taken part in this prestigious event. With Dan R. missing, we decided to stack the A team with our fastest runners first and try to hold on. An astonishing performance which saw Fraser awarded with the Mark Randall Trophy. The rest of the boys ran strongly but we gradually slipped down the field, eventually finishing in 10th place. Basketball 1st Team v QES Kirkby Lonsdale | Won 53-16 Although the score looks very one sided, the match certainly wasn’t. The QES defence was much improved from the first match of our ‘triple-header’, and they gave as good as they got in a highly competitive fixture. Our defence was at times simply superb with Max A and Leo W leading the way, but where we were a class apart was in our scoring. It wasn’t just the colossus Finn B who scored all our points (although he was the highest points scorer!), points came from throughout the team with Ben G scoring plenty, Tom P getting on the score sheet, and debutant Archie C bagging a few, among others. Our captain Kevin G gave great advice at half time, and we played even better in the second half. Rufus L once again tore the opposition ragged with his high-octane attacking game, Aviv L was solid as usual, and the utterly sublime Keagan J dribbled like the great Steph Curry, and scored points so easily he made the basket look as if it was 10 foot wide; everything he threw went in. The referee, aghast after the first fixture due to the very poor quality of play, had nothing but praise for the team at the end of this one. The boys were superb.
  • 10. Soccer 1st XI v Barnard Castle | Won 3-2 Sedbergh took on Barnard Castle for the first home fixture of the season. The conditions were torrential but play took place on time with two strong sides on display. Sedbergh immediately went 1-0 up within 5 minutes , a goal from vice-captain Theo D., Sedbergh soon scored a 2nd this time Jake D. on the scoresheet. On the brink of half time Jake scored a 3rd to make it 3-0 Sedbergh. After a quick turnaround at half time Barnard Castle immediately struck back 2 good goals putting the pressure back on Sedbergh. Sedbergh held out until the final whistle winning 3-2 in extremely difficult conditions. Swimming U18 & U15 v Ampleforth | Won On Saturday 5th February, we saw the home leg of the Ampleforth swimming fixture. This home event was a great opportunity for some of our newer members of the team to get involved in either guest races or as point counting swimmers. From start to finish Sedbergh wowed with both fitness and finesse. Sophia T. and Kaiden S.’s IMs were exceptionally skilled with Kaidan’s strength powering into a clear lead right from the start. Polina W., Jemima H., Max M. and Harry B. had strong debuts and swam with determination from the start of their events. Sedbergh won 18 out of the 19 events on the day and were clear winners. As ever, Fenn C. and Lucy M. led the teams superbly. They were excellent hosts and were able to slot the teams in and out of events to ensure that we made full use of the skills amongst us. Fenn and Lucy ably won their own individual events and have been dedicated members of the swimming team since their arrival at Sedbergh. It is a pleasure to award them both their swimming colours.
  • 11. Fives Northern Schools’ Tournament (Singles Day) Sedbergh Fives team travelled to Durham to play in the Northern Schools Fives Tournament. Most players had never played a competitive game of Fives and those that had played before, had not played for over a year. In the U16 draw, Ollie G. won the tournament and Matthew C. was runner up. Lukas M. won the plate competition to make it a clean sweep for Sedbergh. In the U18s competition, James G and Archie G reached the semi-finals but were both defeated by players from the City of Durham Fives club. In the plate competition, Rhys R was also knocked out at the semi-final stage. Northern Schools’ Tournament (Doubles Day) In today’s Fives doubles event, James G & Archie G finished as runners up in the U18 competition. Ollie G and Lukas M were runners up in the U16 competition. A good weekend competitive Fives played in exactly the right way.
