Evan Skulander, or more commonly known as ‘Cyclone Sku’.
Evan’s tenure at the club dates back to 2014, with his mullet
only dating back to 2018. Evan is one of the last remaining
members of the ‘Crilly Colts’, and since progressing from the
colts’ team, Evan has been an integral component in our senior
side for many years.
Evan is a lockdown back who wears his heart on his sleeve, or
more notably wears the opposition’s face on his sleeve
(including Fokker). His ability to attack every ball with intent &
aggression is something that most admire. You definitely stand
a little taller playing alongside Evan.
Well done on 100 games with the club. It is a tribute to your
journey, dedication & loyalty. We wish you the very best as
you prepare to go to war with Mayne this weekend.
This weekends fixtures
comprised, the Friday Night
Legends hosted by Collingwood
Park, while the QFA men's and
QAFLW women's both travelled
across the river to play the old
enemy Coorparoo on a day they
celebrated the 10 years since our

In a week where we paid tribute to all the great work our
volunteers do for our club, it was fitting we celebrated
all their hard work with a win. Not even plane issues that
left our fearless leader, Tim “Tator” McKinley, stranded
in North Queensland, could disrupt what was brewing to
be a great Saturday afternoon. In scenes reminiscent of
2020, the Wandsworth Demons duo of Brett “Hornet”
Hoare and Josh “Winner of the 2020 iPod Shuffle night”
Beattie prepped the team in the way only they know
how. The sun was out, the wind was blowing, and there
was a feeling that this would finally be the day the team
put in a full four-quarter performance.
Coorparoo came out of the blocks quickly but each
foray forward was repelled by a resilient backline
strongly led by a rampaging Charlie “Persys & Co Ô”
Pershouse, who refused to let anyone in a Navy blue
jersey past. Michael “Pickle Rick” Randone and Liam
“Herbie: Fully Loaded” Walder turned defence into
attack and ably fed the midfielders who gave the
forwards the service they desired to take the team out to
a two-goal lead at the first change.
The second quarter brought with it a tighter tussle. The
ball was hotly contested as bodies were put on the line
for UQ to maintain the lead we had worked so hard to
attain. Mr. Consistent Jordan “Scoop-diddy-whoop”
Williams led the boys strongly and his tenacity was
matched by two of our military contingent in Jake
“Woke up like this” Ralston and Cameron “Working
Bee” Smith. After Daniel “Abrasions” Watson goaled
from 10m out directly in front, the Red Lions took a
well-deserved lead into the main break.
Slow starts to the second half had cost us in recent
weeks so continuing our first half intensity was a
major talking point going into the third quarter.
With the engine room working overtime, some class
around the edges from our young and ever-
improving brigade of Thurwingowa’s-own Tom
Bennett and Liam “Bright Future” McBrien ensured
we remained in control. As the game grew tighter, it
was great to see the voice levels remain high, led by
Damian Ashby who, despite his lofty heights on the
goal-kicking ladder, continues to seek out the best in
his teammates.
Our lead narrowed in the last quarter but our resolve
remained as Josh “Guru” Gale took names in every
one on one contest that came his way. Almost
cruelly, as Coorparoo felt that they might have a
chance to snatch victory, it was quickly taken away
from them as the steely resolve the team has built up
over the last few months finally came to the fore.
“Uncle” Phil Lovett, who had been presenting
strongly all day, finally marked mightily and later
finished off a great passage of team play to continue
his fine return to the team and helped the team kick
away to victory.
A stirring rendition of the club song followed the
final whistle and hopefully, it’s a sound we continue
to hear weekly over the rest of the season.

The Reggies came into this weekend’s away match
against cross-river rivals Coorparoo with a singular
aim – don’t make it easy for our opponents. After a
large 106-17 loss to Coorparoo in round two, the boys
were determined to make our skilled and well-
drilled opposition work for every point.
Due to the absence of coach Binksy and skipper BLS,
Sean Westerhuis assumed captaincy duties and
Assistant Coach Craig (Krag) Hardy stepped
seamlessly into the lead coaching role. Craig split our
aim of not making it easy for our opponents into
three pillars: Accountability, Ownership of the ball
and Playing hard. We were told not to not worry
about the final score; if we achieved all three pillars,
our efforts would be reflected on the scoreboard.
Similar to our performance in the previous week
against Caloundra, our first half was not up to
scratch. Our forwards struggled to win their one-on-
one contests when the ball made it forward despite
some notable performances from Connell Fox and
Nate Bianchi, and Coorparoo had too many options
through the middle of the ground. Coorparoo ended
the half up 10 goals to nil.
Our endeavour to not make it easy for our
opponents improved noticeably in the second half.
This was led by our backline, who apart from some
questionable kick-outs, had a stellar performance.
Luke Bennell, Nick Bennett, Evan Skulander and
Will Delchau formed a wall and impressed with their
intercept marks and contested ball wins. Inspired by
his fresh cut, Jake Sommerville was amongst the best
on ground for the Red Lions, after switching from
the forwards to the backline mid-game.
The final score line read 15.19.109 to 1.4.10. While we
were hoping for a much more respectable score line,
there were some stand out performances on the day.
Lachie Best, Connor Wadsworth and Henry
McLachlan worked tirelessly in the midfield, with
the latter making a case for mark of the year with a
gutsy grab in the second quarter. Sean Westerhuis
performed admirably in a tough match-up in the
ruck and Nick Kennedy gained plenty of touches
around the ground. Dave Bagshaw also played some
of his best footy all year, if only his birthday came
the day before every game

The boys will take plenty out of another tough loss
before facing a strong Mayne team at home next
weekend.

Saturday’s round 11 clash saw us take on cross-
town rivals Coorparoo. The senior girls were
focused on redemption after a patchy
performance in round 4 saw the Roos clinch the
match by just 1 point.
The game opened with a physical and fast-paced
contest. Despite numerous forward entries in our
favour, Coorparoo’s pressure was suffocating, and
they capitalised on their opportunities. Our
defence and midfield rallied as young gun Ava
Seton pushed forward, securing our first goal. We
continued in a fierce arm-wrestle until we were
dealt a huge blow winger Meagan Cook leaving
the field injured after another stellar
performance.
Despite a frustrating 16-point deficit at the major
break, we were determined to enter the second
half with renewed vigour and show the match was
not yet done.
Nat Grider led from the front, dominating down
back and re-bounding plenty of Coorparoo footy .
Mikayla ‘Marto’ Martin and Luke Yoshida-Martin
followed suit, transitioning the footy end-to-end.
Orla O’Dwyer and Greta Bodey were crucial in
our fight-back, combining for 3 goals as we
continued to chip away at the scoreboard. As we
wished for another 5 minutes that could have seen
us run out victors, the final siren sounded, with
Coorparoo eventual winners 6.5.41 to 4.10.34.
Best Players: O. O’Dwyer, G. Bodey, A. Seton, N.
Grider, L. Yoshida-Martin, M. Martin
Despite the loss, the girls should proud of the
courage and tenacity they demonstrated against a
quality performance. Whilst the buzzer beat us on
the day, we came away a fiercer unit and even
more determined to finish the home and away
season on a high. Our final 3 rounds against
Wilston Grange, Aspley and Bond University are
crucial in solidifying our finals campaign.
On a final note, our group is sad to hear of the
imminent departure of Aussie-born, Irish bred
Lions AFLW player Orla O’Dwyer. We’ve been so
lucky to have Orla as a part of our group over the
last month and are sad to see her go. We wish her
luck on her return home and can’t wait to see her
back as a Brisbane Lion and Red Lioness in 2022!

Heading into round 11 the Ressies knew they
were in for a fight to hold on to the top spot.
There was no doubt that the Coorparoo Kings
would be hungry to take back the throne and be
top of the table.
The first half showed a lot of effort for little
reward. Our best on ground Roxy and her team
of midfielders including top 6 alumni Chanel,
Philly and Lily were constantly working to move
the ball through the midfield to our waiting
forwards. A few missed opportunities led to a
couple of behinds on the board for UQ at half
time.
Meanwhile the backline were working tirelessly
to shut down the King’s attacks. Jac Russell was in
every contest spoiling any chance Coorparoo had
of a clean mark in their fifty. The backline
applied the defensive pressure and managed to
stop most of The Kings attacks conceding 3 goals
and a few behinds at the end of the half.
After a half time talk from Coach extraordinaire
Rob Wiggan who reminded us of who we are and
what we are capable of; the team came out firing
and ready to work hard and play our game for a
win. The third quarter saw UQ stick to their game
plan and build serious momentum, with three
goals in 10 minutes to bring us within reach.
Maddy Woods bagged two and Jess Middleton
snapped one between the big sticks.
BATTLE FOR THE THRONE
There was a collective gasp when our star ruck
Hannah ‘Predo’ Curran went down. She had been
integral in helping build the momentum we had
going. However, Kate Le Pointos didn’t miss a
beat in stepping into ruck for the rest of the game
and grinding out some great contests and
continuing to apply pressure on and off the ball.
Heading into the fourth quarter the game was
anyone’s for the taking. The Ressie’s continued to
work the ball around the ground but were unable
to capitalise on the opportunities presented. A
few misread leads meant two goals for the King’s
in the last minutes of the fourth. UQ kept
attacking the ball until the final siren.
Unfortunately, we left our comeback too late and
were defeated 32 -23, placing Coorparoo a top the
table in #1 spot heading into the last few rounds
of the season. The Kings have reclaimed the
throne
 for now

To be the best, first you must beat the best. With
redemption for last year’s Elimination final defeat
still fresh in their minds a 4-1 Div 4 side travelled to
face long-time rivals Collingwood Park.
Having ground out a one-point victory the week
before in slippery conditions the week before facing
an in-form Power outfit on the vast expanses of their
home deck was always going to prove a challenge.
Unfortunately, a four goal to one first term would
put the Red Lions on the back foot from the get-go.
Gun wing pairing Jack Halley and Lewis Smith would
make the most of the wide open spaces of Redbank
Plains while Lachlan Otto continued to provide
headaches for the Power down back. First half goals
to Brad Clark, Corey Johnson and slipper Sully
Grevis-James would keep Uni in the hunt at half
time.
The second half would resemble a dog fight with
both teams failing to kick a goal in an exhausting
third team which quickly turned into a game of
force-them-backs. The Power would kick the only
other major of the match in the final term to put the
result beyond doubt.
The result may not have been ideal but going into a
much needed bye the Red Lions now have the
blueprint to make their charge towards September
and will be very keen for a re-match at the Fortress
after a valuable lesson was learnt.

SIR DOUG NICHOLS INDIGENOUS ROUND @
THE PAVILLION
The AFL's annual round recognising and
celebrating First Nations players and culture is
named in honour of Sir Doug Nicholls.
Sir Doug, who epitomised the spirit of
reconciliation, played 54 games for Fitzroy and was
a brilliant all-round athlete. The first Aboriginal
person to be knighted, he also served as Governor
of South Australia and was devoted to the
wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
people.
This round falls in the middle of National
Reconciliation Week, which is a time for all
Australians to learn about our shared histories,
cultures, and achievements, and to explore how
each of us can contribute to achieving
reconciliation in Australia. The theme for 2021,
'More than a word. Reconciliation takes action',
urges the reconciliation movement towards braver
and more impactful action. As a Club we take this
time to celebrate our indigenous players past and
present, and commit ourselves to working for
reconciliation.

  • 1. 1 Evan Skulander, or more commonly known as ‘Cyclone Sku’. Evan’s tenure at the club dates back to 2014, with his mullet only dating back to 2018. Evan is one of the last remaining members of the ‘Crilly Colts’, and since progressing from the colts’ team, Evan has been an integral component in our senior side for many years. Evan is a lockdown back who wears his heart on his sleeve, or more notably wears the opposition’s face on his sleeve (including Fokker). His ability to attack every ball with intent & aggression is something that most admire. You definitely stand a little taller playing alongside Evan. Well done on 100 games with the club. It is a tribute to your journey, dedication & loyalty. We wish you the very best as you prepare to go to war with Mayne this weekend. This weekends fixtures comprised, the Friday Night Legends hosted by Collingwood Park, while the QFA men's and QAFLW women's both travelled across the river to play the old enemy Coorparoo on a day they celebrated the 10 years since our Mens grand final meeting. • 2. 2 In a week where we paid tribute to all the great work our volunteers do for our club, it was fitting we celebrated all their hard work with a win. Not even plane issues that left our fearless leader, Tim “Tator” McKinley, stranded in North Queensland, could disrupt what was brewing to be a great Saturday afternoon. In scenes reminiscent of 2020, the Wandsworth Demons duo of Brett “Hornet” Hoare and Josh “Winner of the 2020 iPod Shuffle night” Beattie prepped the team in the way only they know how. The sun was out, the wind was blowing, and there was a feeling that this would finally be the day the team put in a full four-quarter performance. Coorparoo came out of the blocks quickly but each foray forward was repelled by a resilient backline strongly led by a rampaging Charlie “Persys & Co Ô” Pershouse, who refused to let anyone in a Navy blue jersey past. Michael “Pickle Rick” Randone and Liam “Herbie: Fully Loaded” Walder turned defence into attack and ably fed the midfielders who gave the forwards the service they desired to take the team out to a two-goal lead at the first change. The second quarter brought with it a tighter tussle. The ball was hotly contested as bodies were put on the line for UQ to maintain the lead we had worked so hard to attain. Mr. Consistent Jordan “Scoop-diddy-whoop” Williams led the boys strongly and his tenacity was matched by two of our military contingent in Jake “Woke up like this” Ralston and Cameron “Working Bee” Smith. After Daniel “Abrasions” Watson goaled from 10m out directly in front, the Red Lions took a well-deserved lead into the main break. Slow starts to the second half had cost us in recent weeks so continuing our first half intensity was a major talking point going into the third quarter. With the engine room working overtime, some class around the edges from our young and ever- improving brigade of Thurwingowa’s-own Tom Bennett and Liam “Bright Future” McBrien ensured we remained in control. As the game grew tighter, it was great to see the voice levels remain high, led by Damian Ashby who, despite his lofty heights on the goal-kicking ladder, continues to seek out the best in his teammates. Our lead narrowed in the last quarter but our resolve remained as Josh “Guru” Gale took names in every one on one contest that came his way. Almost cruelly, as Coorparoo felt that they might have a chance to snatch victory, it was quickly taken away from them as the steely resolve the team has built up over the last few months finally came to the fore. “Uncle” Phil Lovett, who had been presenting strongly all day, finally marked mightily and later finished off a great passage of team play to continue his fine return to the team and helped the team kick away to victory. A stirring rendition of the club song followed the final whistle and hopefully, it’s a sound we continue to hear weekly over the rest of the season. Goal Kickers: D. Ashby 5, J. Williams 2, D. • 3. 3 The Reggies came into this weekend’s away match against cross-river rivals Coorparoo with a singular aim – don’t make it easy for our opponents. After a large 106-17 loss to Coorparoo in round two, the boys were determined to make our skilled and well- drilled opposition work for every point. Due to the absence of coach Binksy and skipper BLS, Sean Westerhuis assumed captaincy duties and Assistant Coach Craig (Krag) Hardy stepped seamlessly into the lead coaching role. Craig split our aim of not making it easy for our opponents into three pillars: Accountability, Ownership of the ball and Playing hard. We were told not to not worry about the final score; if we achieved all three pillars, our efforts would be reflected on the scoreboard. Similar to our performance in the previous week against Caloundra, our first half was not up to scratch. Our forwards struggled to win their one-on- one contests when the ball made it forward despite some notable performances from Connell Fox and Nate Bianchi, and Coorparoo had too many options through the middle of the ground. Coorparoo ended the half up 10 goals to nil. Our endeavour to not make it easy for our opponents improved noticeably in the second half. This was led by our backline, who apart from some questionable kick-outs, had a stellar performance. Luke Bennell, Nick Bennett, Evan Skulander and Will Delchau formed a wall and impressed with their intercept marks and contested ball wins. Inspired by his fresh cut, Jake Sommerville was amongst the best on ground for the Red Lions, after switching from the forwards to the backline mid-game. The final score line read 15.19.109 to 1.4.10. While we were hoping for a much more respectable score line, there were some stand out performances on the day. Lachie Best, Connor Wadsworth and Henry McLachlan worked tirelessly in the midfield, with the latter making a case for mark of the year with a gutsy grab in the second quarter. Sean Westerhuis performed admirably in a tough match-up in the ruck and Nick Kennedy gained plenty of touches around the ground. Dave Bagshaw also played some of his best footy all year, if only his birthday came the day before every game
The boys will take plenty out of another tough loss before facing a strong Mayne team at home next weekend. • 4. 4 Saturday’s round 11 clash saw us take on cross- town rivals Coorparoo. The senior girls were focused on redemption after a patchy performance in round 4 saw the Roos clinch the match by just 1 point. The game opened with a physical and fast-paced contest. Despite numerous forward entries in our favour, Coorparoo’s pressure was suffocating, and they capitalised on their opportunities. Our defence and midfield rallied as young gun Ava Seton pushed forward, securing our first goal. We continued in a fierce arm-wrestle until we were dealt a huge blow winger Meagan Cook leaving the field injured after another stellar performance. Despite a frustrating 16-point deficit at the major break, we were determined to enter the second half with renewed vigour and show the match was not yet done. Nat Grider led from the front, dominating down back and re-bounding plenty of Coorparoo footy . Mikayla ‘Marto’ Martin and Luke Yoshida-Martin followed suit, transitioning the footy end-to-end. Orla O’Dwyer and Greta Bodey were crucial in our fight-back, combining for 3 goals as we continued to chip away at the scoreboard. As we wished for another 5 minutes that could have seen us run out victors, the final siren sounded, with Coorparoo eventual winners 6.5.41 to 4.10.34. Best Players: O. O’Dwyer, G. Bodey, A. Seton, N. Grider, L. Yoshida-Martin, M. Martin Despite the loss, the girls should proud of the courage and tenacity they demonstrated against a quality performance. Whilst the buzzer beat us on the day, we came away a fiercer unit and even more determined to finish the home and away season on a high. Our final 3 rounds against Wilston Grange, Aspley and Bond University are crucial in solidifying our finals campaign. On a final note, our group is sad to hear of the imminent departure of Aussie-born, Irish bred Lions AFLW player Orla O’Dwyer. We’ve been so lucky to have Orla as a part of our group over the last month and are sad to see her go. We wish her luck on her return home and can’t wait to see her back as a Brisbane Lion and Red Lioness in 2022! Goal Kickers: O. O’Dwyer 2, G. Bodey, G. • 5. 5 Heading into round 11 the Ressies knew they were in for a fight to hold on to the top spot. There was no doubt that the Coorparoo Kings would be hungry to take back the throne and be top of the table. The first half showed a lot of effort for little reward. Our best on ground Roxy and her team of midfielders including top 6 alumni Chanel, Philly and Lily were constantly working to move the ball through the midfield to our waiting forwards. A few missed opportunities led to a couple of behinds on the board for UQ at half time. Meanwhile the backline were working tirelessly to shut down the King’s attacks. Jac Russell was in every contest spoiling any chance Coorparoo had of a clean mark in their fifty. The backline applied the defensive pressure and managed to stop most of The Kings attacks conceding 3 goals and a few behinds at the end of the half. After a half time talk from Coach extraordinaire Rob Wiggan who reminded us of who we are and what we are capable of; the team came out firing and ready to work hard and play our game for a win. The third quarter saw UQ stick to their game plan and build serious momentum, with three goals in 10 minutes to bring us within reach. Maddy Woods bagged two and Jess Middleton snapped one between the big sticks. BATTLE FOR THE THRONE There was a collective gasp when our star ruck Hannah ‘Predo’ Curran went down. She had been integral in helping build the momentum we had going. However, Kate Le Pointos didn’t miss a beat in stepping into ruck for the rest of the game and grinding out some great contests and continuing to apply pressure on and off the ball. Heading into the fourth quarter the game was anyone’s for the taking. The Ressie’s continued to work the ball around the ground but were unable to capitalise on the opportunities presented. A few misread leads meant two goals for the King’s in the last minutes of the fourth. UQ kept attacking the ball until the final siren. Unfortunately, we left our comeback too late and were defeated 32 -23, placing Coorparoo a top the table in #1 spot heading into the last few rounds of the season. The Kings have reclaimed the throne

  • 6. 6 To be the best, first you must beat the best. With redemption for last year’s Elimination final defeat still fresh in their minds a 4-1 Div 4 side travelled to face long-time rivals Collingwood Park. Having ground out a one-point victory the week before in slippery conditions the week before facing an in-form Power outfit on the vast expanses of their home deck was always going to prove a challenge. Unfortunately, a four goal to one first term would put the Red Lions on the back foot from the get-go. Gun wing pairing Jack Halley and Lewis Smith would make the most of the wide open spaces of Redbank Plains while Lachlan Otto continued to provide headaches for the Power down back. First half goals to Brad Clark, Corey Johnson and slipper Sully Grevis-James would keep Uni in the hunt at half time. The second half would resemble a dog fight with both teams failing to kick a goal in an exhausting third team which quickly turned into a game of force-them-backs. The Power would kick the only other major of the match in the final term to put the result beyond doubt. The result may not have been ideal but going into a much needed bye the Red Lions now have the blueprint to make their charge towards September and will be very keen for a re-match at the Fortress after a valuable lesson was learnt. • 7. 7 SIR DOUG NICHOLS INDIGENOUS ROUND @ THE PAVILLION The AFL's annual round recognising and celebrating First Nations players and culture is named in honour of Sir Doug Nicholls. Sir Doug, who epitomised the spirit of reconciliation, played 54 games for Fitzroy and was a brilliant all-round athlete. The first Aboriginal person to be knighted, he also served as Governor of South Australia and was devoted to the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This round falls in the middle of National Reconciliation Week, which is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The theme for 2021, 'More than a word. Reconciliation takes action', urges the reconciliation movement towards braver and more impactful action. As a Club we take this time to celebrate our indigenous players past and present, and commit ourselves to working for reconciliation.
