Tennis
Boys v St Peter’s
With every court on campus in use at some point during this fixture the meet with St Peter’s
has been the largest friendly the School has hosted for a number of years. Senior As hosted
on Buskholme Courts and whilst ultimately beating St Peter’s senior squad comfortably the
somewhat confident outing by James G and Linus B gave a few invaluable games away.
Senior As. Win.
Senior Bs were given a lesson on the Astro and Sedbergh’s politeness when it comes to line
calls continue to frustrate those observing with clear points at key rallies needlessly conceded.
Senior Bs. Lost.
The U15s score lines on a per game basis was close and the sudden death at deuce method
employed certainly played to the visiting team’s advantage...literally. Infectious levels of
politeness equalling that displayed by the Senior Bs will be addressed before future fixtures.
Under 15s. Lost.
The stars of the fixture were the 3 pairs representing the Under 14s. Energetic, enthusiastic
and stylish. A friendly but competitive rapport certainly secured court dominance. Under 14s.
Win.
Tennis
Girls v St Peter’s
On Saturday 14th May 24 girls from U14-U18 played in pairs matches against St Peter’s. As
we approached our courts it was amazing to see so many girls out representing Sedbergh
in cricket, rounders, and tennis. Many of the girls’ highlights were the opportunity to support
each other across a range of sports. Whilst for others it was the opportunity to have their photo
taken with Judy Murray.
For the Senior 1st this was an important repeat fixture, today we displayed phenomenal
resilience and diplomacy walking away with 11 games vs just 6 two weeks ago. Our triumph
however, were two tie breaks against their opposite pairs for Evie C. and Ava B. narrowly
missing out 4-6 and Alice M. and Sorcha W. 5-7 next time girls.
The U16’s played St Peter’s 2nds. For some this was their first match of the season and
whilst nervous were unphased by St Peter’s confidence. Our girls held their challenges with
conviction and called each out, let and fault like a pro. The 6 girls played like aging wine,
getting better with each game. With 23 games won and wins for Hannah M. and Evie R.
6-1 against St Peter’s 3’s and Alice B. and Kitty W. against their 2’s the U16’s were the most
successful team of the day.
For the U15’s despite not winning a set they too have shown great sportsmanship and
determination. With 14 games won and a close match had by Carla G. and Ru D. losing
narrowly in a tie break against St. Peter’s 3’s the girls finished the fixture smiling and enjoy the
company of their hosts.
Having won 17 games it is a shame that the score line does not reflect how close the U14’s were
on so many occasions. Going forward consistency with pairings, coaching and game practise
will soon see these girls coming out on top. Well done the Katie W. and Alice B. For their win
6-4 against St Peter’s 3’s. It was a lovely day of fixtures, with so many parents there to celebrate
the many wins, losses, and close tie-breaks. Well done to all the girls who played, it was a
fantastic display of Sedberghian Spirit.
Rounders
U18A Won v St Peter’s 25-12 1/2
Tight fielding in the first innings kept scores low with Grace ., Beth D. and Kayleigh R. making
quick runs and accurate throws to posts (shoutout to the infamous Johnston long barrier!). Two
superb catches by last minute call up Daniella M. at 3rd post were valuable contributions to
getting all nine batters out after just twenty good balls. An epic rounder from Beth D. set the
tone for a strong batting innings with Martha K. and Grace J. scoring two rounders a piece. First
innings final scores, Sedbergh led 13 to 6. With flawless bowling from Ava H. , and excellent 1st
and 4th post outs by Izzi M., Lex W-W and Anya S., the team worked brilliantly as a unit to limit
St Peter’s to 6 1/2 rounders in the second innings. Second batting innings was Izzi M’s time to
shine, littering the first deep with super hits. Consistent wallops from Lex (through the sports
centre door!) afforded her the top overall score of the day at 4 1/2 rounders. Overall score: a
stellar 25 to 12 1/2 win for Sedbergh.
U18B Won v St Peter’s 22-11
The U18B were playing in their first fixture of the season and with the match format made
up of one innings of thirty ‘good balls’ and a second innings of ‘all-out’, it was certainly going
to be a tactically demanding game. Captain Coco C. stepped up brilliantly in this role and
communicated very clearly to her team how these two different innings must be approached.
The squad responded brilliantly with both innings won well, despite St Peter’s also employing
such good tactics of their own. With the bat, Daisy M. and TJ P. stood out with some excellent
strikes. In the field, consistent bowling from Bella H. and then some fantastic ‘backstop to
first’ work from Hannah F. and Coco C. made even lighter work of the ‘all-out’ innings than we
could have hoped for. Tamara M. was another individual worthy of note, with some very secure
work on second post. Very well done to all of the squad for a brilliant match playing in excellent
spirit.
Cricket
U14 Girls (102-5) beat Stonyhurst (76-10) by 26 runs
Despite the heavy rain the girls put in a good all round performance to beat Stonyhurst.
Batting first Amelia O. (28 retired) and Annie C. (23 retired) were the main stays of the innings
whilst others were shaping up much better and looking far more comfortable at the crease. In
reply all 13 girls bowled with Katie W. (2-4) and Amelia O. (2-4) taking two wickets each but the
highlight of the day came from Erin R., when she caught a blinder off her own bowling. Still
plenty to learn but the girls are improving quickly and enjoying their cricket.
Girls 1st XI (141-3) beat Stonyhurst (110-7) by 31 runs
A fine 63 from captain Harriet R and useful contributions from Freyja H., Annie H. and Amelia
O. gave Sedbergh a strong total to defend in the under 18s National 100 Cup. Despite stricter
leg side wide regulations the girls bowled far less wides than the previous weekend and fielded
well to limit Stonyhurst, who never really challenged the required total. Pru L. in particular was
amazing at deep square leg in the field, diving to stop boundaries and attacking and throwing
the ball at every opportunity. A good win for the girls who continue to improve.
1st XI (89-1) beat St Peter’s (85) by 9 wickets
The 1st XI bounced back strongly from last week’s defeat and produced their best bowling and
fielding performance of the season to date to dismiss the hosts for just 85. Nick K., making his
1st XI debut, bowled beautifully with the new ball and finished with 2-10 from his 8 overs and
was well supported by Max W. with 4-23 and Jake D. with 3-23. Jack T. fell early in the chase but
Evan W. with 48 n.o. and Henry H.s, 20 n.o., batted well together to see us home in the 16th over
for a comfortable victory.
Girls 1st XI (65-8) beat St Peter’s York (64-6) by 2 wickets
An excellent fielding and bowling display that showed vast improvement on last Saturday’s
performance was the cornerstone of a nail-biting victory on Cemetery. Nine bowlers were used
by stand-in captain Maddy H, Pru L, Millie JP and Freyja H in particular all bowling well. In reply
Sedbergh lost wickets steadily but kept the scoreboard ticking over on a slow pitch before
Annie C. and Freyja H. saw the girls home in the seventeenth over. The most pleasing aspect
was the improvement in understanding of how to perform to be successful and awareness of
how to field with intent.
2XI v Heysham CC
Lost by 63 runs
Under blue skies and warm May sunshine, Sedbergh hosted Heysham in a picture postcard
setting. Annoyingly Dan S. pulled up lame in the warmup to be replaced, by Nathan B. who
happened to be the closest sunbather with a grasp of the game. More about his cameo later.
Heysham won the toss and batted.
Ben S. was the pick of the Sedbergh bowlers taking 4 wickets for 40 runs. He was ably
supported by Henry JP, who tied the Heysham batters in knots taking 3 wickets for 11 frugal
runs. Matthew H. was similarly economical for his 2 wickets. Heysham were bowled out for 165,
which at under 4 an over on a big pitch looked to be below par and Sedbergh fancied their
chances of chasing the score down.
George A. and Tom N. got the response off to a strong start. Aldersley scoring most of his 34
runs by the well perfected art of chipping the ball just over frustrated fielders. Matthew H.
and Sam F. helped steer the middle order and at 72 for 3 with 25 overs left, the match was
well poised. Then the collapse. Only Nathan B. offered resistance and his entertaining innings
featured some massive blows including a straight 6 which was still rising as it cleared the
boundary. In the end Sedbergh limped to 3 figures before being bowled out for 102. A loss by
63 runs.
U15 XI Girls (113-3) beat St Peter’s York (74-9) by 39 runs
On a glorious sunny afternoon an under strength under 15s put in a fine performance against
St Peter’s. Batting first in pairs Sedbergh only lost 3 wickets as each pair faced three overs, the
highlights being Bella S. cover drives and Liv M’s boundary striking in the last three overs of the
innings, where she and Amelia O. racked up 37 runs. In reply every girl bowled two overs each,
clean bowling nine of the Peter’s batters in the process. All the girls continue to improve their
accuracy and pace with Bea P. and Hattie N in particular bowling with some pace. Another
step in the right direction for these girls as they continue to enjoy their first proper season of
cricket.
St Peter’s XI Boys U15 273-4 beat Sedbergh U15 XI 195-6 by 78 runs
Winning the toss and batting seemed to be a good decision with Tom N. and Jack T. getting
the innings off to a solid start. Jack was out for 17 to a stunning caught and bowled when he
looked set to make a large score. Tom made an accomplished 52 and with the score at 72 for
1 Sedbergh looked well set. If the reader sensed the ‘however’ moment in the preamble, then
here it comes; Sedbergh collapsed to 101 all out. In reply, Trimpell started slowly, but then just
kept the score board ticking. In spite of tight bowling from Nick K. who went for just 2 runs off
6 overs and 3 well taken wickets for Jack T., Trimpell had too many overs to knock off the score,
which they did after 34.5 overs. A loss by 5 wickets.
U14 Girls XI v St Peter’s
St Peter’s U14A beat Sedbergh school 278 to 273 runs, 20 overs per side
It was a beautiful sunny day in York and the atmosphere between all students and staff
involved was a buzz. St Peter’s started very well with a few 4s and multiple no balls from
our bowling. After all players had batted Peter’s finished with a strong score of 278. When
Sedbergh got to bat, unfortunately we did not start well as Peter’s, as there were missed
opportunities and not enough aggression on the decision making. Isobel F. followed soon
after and Erin R. who both made significant impacts to the scoreboard and batted very well!
However, in the end we unfortunately missed out but an extremely slim margin, but a brilliant
day was had. Isobel F. was voted player of the match by the opposing team.
3rd XI v Burneside Lost by 21 runs
This was an excellent bowling performance by the 3rd XI to dismiss Burneside for a modest
134. Nathan B. and Alfie S. were the pick of the bowlers with 3-14 and 4-26 respectively.
Nathan’s opening spell, in particular, was impressive and included four consecutive maidens.
Unfortunately, Sedbergh’s batting did not match the quality of the bowling and the frequent
fall of wickets stalled the 3rd XI’s chase. The majority of the boundaries scored came off the
edge of the bat as the Sedbergh batsmen struggled with the consistency of the Burneside
attack. Patience and finding a way to rotate the strike eluded Sedbergh. A good competitive
game overall.
Golf
Unfortunately Rossall cancelled their fixture with Sedbergh this weekend; instead, 24 boys
played in an internal competition. Ollie H. was the captain of the 12 players representing the
“United Kingdom” and they donned the colour blue. Iponeng T. captained “The Rest of the
World” and they were in red jerseys. The UK team were all front loaded with the likes of George
D. and Henry B. scoring very well indeed. Theo D. picked up the prize for the longest drive with
a rip-snorting 300 yarder on the 3rd. However, after several hours of golf and dozens of holes
in the glorious sunshine, everything was all square with one hole to play. Yann Z. had ice in his
veins and drove a nine iron within yards of the pin on the 18th and that was that; the Rest of
the World team were victorious!
Sailing
3000 Nationals
After a long and blowy drive down to Derbyshire, it was sad to see the wind was following the
forecast and was light and fickle on Day 1 – despite the race officer’s best attempts no racing
was possible despite two “return to shore to await further instructions” - in the hope that the
wind might be tempted to come out and play. We got as close as 45 seconds to a race start
when the wind flicked through 90 degrees and blew
parallel to the start line!
The Sedbergh team retreated to their ecopods to light
the firepit and contemplate what tomorrow might
bring.
Anyway, Sunday was much better and the rain didn’t
make an appearance. In fact it was bit too blowy for
some and all boats capsized at some stage apart from
the winners. The winners from Bough Beech were
head and shoulder above the rest and finished 1st in
every race. The two OS brothers, Richard and Andrew
Lu. from Grassholme, had their mast fall down when
their jury rigged jib failed on them. Meanwhile Dr
Ripley crewing for a Carsington helm were 2nd overall
despite being hotly pursued by the other youth boat
from Bosworth SC sailing a Laser 3000 in which they
convincingly won the Rose Bowl for the winning
Laser 3000 though the South Cerney pair would have
pushed them were it not for a capsize, lost rudder
and rescue in Race 3. Jan T. and Constantin S. from
Sedbergh School sailing their first race in a 3000 had
a consistent series of races despite the occasional
capsize and took the U18 Shield home with them.
If only we could have averaged the wind over the two days it would have been marvellous. As it
was, the best boat won which is always reassuring. We hope that there will be a Nationals next
year - watch this space.

Well done to all the girls who played, it was a fantastic display of Sedberghian Spirit. • 4. Cricket U14 Girls (102-5) beat Stonyhurst (76-10) by 26 runs Despite the heavy rain the girls put in a good all round performance to beat Stonyhurst. Batting first Amelia O. (28 retired) and Annie C. (23 retired) were the main stays of the innings whilst others were shaping up much better and looking far more comfortable at the crease. In reply all 13 girls bowled with Katie W. (2-4) and Amelia O. (2-4) taking two wickets each but the highlight of the day came from Erin R., when she caught a blinder off her own bowling. Still plenty to learn but the girls are improving quickly and enjoying their cricket. Girls 1st XI (141-3) beat Stonyhurst (110-7) by 31 runs A fine 63 from captain Harriet R and useful contributions from Freyja H., Annie H. and Amelia O. gave Sedbergh a strong total to defend in the under 18s National 100 Cup. Despite stricter leg side wide regulations the girls bowled far less wides than the previous weekend and fielded well to limit Stonyhurst, who never really challenged the required total. Pru L. in particular was amazing at deep square leg in the field, diving to stop boundaries and attacking and throwing the ball at every opportunity. A good win for the girls who continue to improve. 1st XI (89-1) beat St Peter’s (85) by 9 wickets The 1st XI bounced back strongly from last week’s defeat and produced their best bowling and fielding performance of the season to date to dismiss the hosts for just 85. Nick K., making his 1st XI debut, bowled beautifully with the new ball and finished with 2-10 from his 8 overs and was well supported by Max W. with 4-23 and Jake D. with 3-23. Jack T. fell early in the chase but Evan W. with 48 n.o. and Henry H.s, 20 n.o., batted well together to see us home in the 16th over for a comfortable victory.
  • 5. Girls 1st XI (65-8) beat St Peter’s York (64-6) by 2 wickets An excellent fielding and bowling display that showed vast improvement on last Saturday’s performance was the cornerstone of a nail-biting victory on Cemetery. Nine bowlers were used by stand-in captain Maddy H, Pru L, Millie JP and Freyja H in particular all bowling well. In reply Sedbergh lost wickets steadily but kept the scoreboard ticking over on a slow pitch before Annie C. and Freyja H. saw the girls home in the seventeenth over. The most pleasing aspect was the improvement in understanding of how to perform to be successful and awareness of how to field with intent. 2XI v Heysham CC Lost by 63 runs Under blue skies and warm May sunshine, Sedbergh hosted Heysham in a picture postcard setting. Annoyingly Dan S. pulled up lame in the warmup to be replaced, by Nathan B. who happened to be the closest sunbather with a grasp of the game. More about his cameo later. Heysham won the toss and batted. Ben S. was the pick of the Sedbergh bowlers taking 4 wickets for 40 runs. He was ably supported by Henry JP, who tied the Heysham batters in knots taking 3 wickets for 11 frugal runs. Matthew H. was similarly economical for his 2 wickets. Heysham were bowled out for 165, which at under 4 an over on a big pitch looked to be below par and Sedbergh fancied their chances of chasing the score down. George A. and Tom N. got the response off to a strong start. Aldersley scoring most of his 34 runs by the well perfected art of chipping the ball just over frustrated fielders. Matthew H. and Sam F. helped steer the middle order and at 72 for 3 with 25 overs left, the match was well poised. Then the collapse. Only Nathan B. offered resistance and his entertaining innings featured some massive blows including a straight 6 which was still rising as it cleared the boundary. In the end Sedbergh limped to 3 figures before being bowled out for 102. A loss by 63 runs.
  • 6. U15 XI Girls (113-3) beat St Peter’s York (74-9) by 39 runs On a glorious sunny afternoon an under strength under 15s put in a fine performance against St Peter’s. Batting first in pairs Sedbergh only lost 3 wickets as each pair faced three overs, the highlights being Bella S. cover drives and Liv M’s boundary striking in the last three overs of the innings, where she and Amelia O. racked up 37 runs. In reply every girl bowled two overs each, clean bowling nine of the Peter’s batters in the process. All the girls continue to improve their accuracy and pace with Bea P. and Hattie N in particular bowling with some pace. Another step in the right direction for these girls as they continue to enjoy their first proper season of cricket. St Peter’s XI Boys U15 273-4 beat Sedbergh U15 XI 195-6 by 78 runs Winning the toss and batting seemed to be a good decision with Tom N. and Jack T. getting the innings off to a solid start. Jack was out for 17 to a stunning caught and bowled when he looked set to make a large score. Tom made an accomplished 52 and with the score at 72 for 1 Sedbergh looked well set. If the reader sensed the ‘however’ moment in the preamble, then here it comes; Sedbergh collapsed to 101 all out. In reply, Trimpell started slowly, but then just kept the score board ticking. In spite of tight bowling from Nick K. who went for just 2 runs off 6 overs and 3 well taken wickets for Jack T., Trimpell had too many overs to knock off the score, which they did after 34.5 overs. A loss by 5 wickets. U14 Girls XI v St Peter’s St Peter’s U14A beat Sedbergh school 278 to 273 runs, 20 overs per side It was a beautiful sunny day in York and the atmosphere between all students and staff involved was a buzz. St Peter’s started very well with a few 4s and multiple no balls from our bowling. After all players had batted Peter’s finished with a strong score of 278. When Sedbergh got to bat, unfortunately we did not start well as Peter’s, as there were missed opportunities and not enough aggression on the decision making. Isobel F. followed soon after and Erin R. who both made significant impacts to the scoreboard and batted very well! However, in the end we unfortunately missed out but an extremely slim margin, but a brilliant day was had. Isobel F. was voted player of the match by the opposing team.
  • 7. 3rd XI v Burneside Lost by 21 runs This was an excellent bowling performance by the 3rd XI to dismiss Burneside for a modest 134. Nathan B. and Alfie S. were the pick of the bowlers with 3-14 and 4-26 respectively. Nathan’s opening spell, in particular, was impressive and included four consecutive maidens. Unfortunately, Sedbergh’s batting did not match the quality of the bowling and the frequent fall of wickets stalled the 3rd XI’s chase. The majority of the boundaries scored came off the edge of the bat as the Sedbergh batsmen struggled with the consistency of the Burneside attack. Patience and finding a way to rotate the strike eluded Sedbergh. A good competitive game overall. Golf Unfortunately Rossall cancelled their fixture with Sedbergh this weekend; instead, 24 boys played in an internal competition. Ollie H. was the captain of the 12 players representing the “United Kingdom” and they donned the colour blue. Iponeng T. captained “The Rest of the World” and they were in red jerseys. The UK team were all front loaded with the likes of George D. and Henry B. scoring very well indeed. Theo D. picked up the prize for the longest drive with a rip-snorting 300 yarder on the 3rd. However, after several hours of golf and dozens of holes in the glorious sunshine, everything was all square with one hole to play. Yann Z. had ice in his veins and drove a nine iron within yards of the pin on the 18th and that was that; the Rest of the World team were victorious! Sailing 3000 Nationals After a long and blowy drive down to Derbyshire, it was sad to see the wind was following the forecast and was light and fickle on Day 1 – despite the race officer’s best attempts no racing was possible despite two “return to shore to await further instructions” - in the hope that the wind might be tempted to come out and play. We got as close as 45 seconds to a race start when the wind flicked through 90 degrees and blew parallel to the start line! The Sedbergh team retreated to their ecopods to light the firepit and contemplate what tomorrow might bring. Anyway, Sunday was much better and the rain didn’t make an appearance. In fact it was bit too blowy for some and all boats capsized at some stage apart from the winners. The winners from Bough Beech were head and shoulder above the rest and finished 1st in every race. The two OS brothers, Richard and Andrew Lu. from Grassholme, had their mast fall down when their jury rigged jib failed on them. Meanwhile Dr Ripley crewing for a Carsington helm were 2nd overall despite being hotly pursued by the other youth boat from Bosworth SC sailing a Laser 3000 in which they convincingly won the Rose Bowl for the winning Laser 3000 though the South Cerney pair would have pushed them were it not for a capsize, lost rudder and rescue in Race 3. Jan T. and Constantin S. from Sedbergh School sailing their first race in a 3000 had a consistent series of races despite the occasional capsize and took the U18 Shield home with them. If only we could have averaged the wind over the two days it would have been marvellous. As it was, the best boat won which is always reassuring. We hope that there will be a Nationals next year - watch this space.
