CONCEPT OF
VAMANOPAKA DRAVYAS
Introduction
 Vamana - first procedure in panchakarma
 The procedure that eliminates morbid doshas
through oral route is known as vamana
 तत्र दोष निर्हरणं ऊर्हभागं वामि
Drugs used In vamana
 The drugs which induce vamana-vamaka or vamana
drugs
 They are of 3 types
1. Vamana dravyas- which induce vamana directly
2. Vamanopaga dravyas-which help or boost or
augment the vamana kriya, which is already set in
3. Adjuvents- it is a pharmacological agent that
modifies the effect of other agents eg: madhu
,saindhava
Vamaka dravya guna
 Acc to charaka
 Ushna teekshna sookshma, vyavayi, vikashi
 mahabhutas- vaayu agni
Concept of vamanopaga dravyas
 Vamanopaga drugs are the supportive drugs in the
process of vomitting
 They help-producing the act of vomiting
 The function of vamanopaga drugs can be judged by the
properties which they possess
 used for- akhanda pana during vamana - kashaya or
phanta
 They helps in dissolution of vamana drugs and thus
promots absorbtion, distribution and metabolisam of
vamana dravya occurs
 These drugs reduce the irritating property of vamana
drugs
 Vamana occurs better in full stomach. Akhanda pana
by these drugs produces strech reflex and cause
easy vomitting
 Most of the drugs having madhura rasa and
madhura vipaka and sheeta veerya, so better to use
for akhanda pana
 They reduses irritation ang better to avoid
complications during vamana.
 They are vayu and agni mahabhoota dominent
 So they have urdhabhaga prabhavam
 They also increses the palatability and give
soothing effect
 Effect of both drugs will help in the comfortable
and less irritated vamana process
Properties In general
 Rasa –madhura rasa
 Guna- laghu rooksha
 Veerya- sheeta veerya
 Vipaka- madhura vipaka
 Karma- supporting or helping or boosting vamana
along with vamaka drugs
Difference between vamaka and
vamanopaga drugs
 Vamaka drugs
 Main constitution of
vamana kalpa
 Single mim dose adequate
as per samhita
 Acts in faster with a min
dose
 A theraputic vamana
should contain these drugs
 Vamana drugs act on the
basis of prabhava
 Vamanopaga drugs
 Supportive to the
vamana drugs during
vamana
 Dosage can be
changed acc to vegas
during vamana
 Act under the influence
of vamana drugs
 They induce vamana,
but cannot perform
thraputic vamana
 Act on the basis of
panchamahabhoota
composition
 Used acc to disease
 Reached in all srotas of
the body
 Physically they are with
durgandha, and with katu,
tikta, kashaya rasa
 Common
pharmacodynamic
properties includes
ushna,teekshna,
sookshma,vyavayi and
urdha bhaga pravrtha
 Depents on present
condition of procedure
 Mainly act on maha
srotas
 Most of them are
madhura rasa and
sheeta veerya
 Thus properties differs
from drug to drug
Vamanopaga drugs
 Only charaka discribed vamanopaga drugs seperatly
 Others added with vamaka drugs
 In cha su- 4/13
 Madhu
 Madhuka
 Kovidara
 Karbudara
 Nipa
 Bimbi
 Sanapushpi
 Arka/sadapushpi
 Apamarga or pratyak pushpi
Other vamanopaka dravyas
 Ksheeram
 Lavanodakam
 Ikshu rasa
Conditions for using vamanopaka
dravya with vamakadravyas
 Vamaka dravya cause theraputic vamana, but for
making vamana easy, vamanopaga drugs can be
used
 In baala, sukumara, vridha etc vamanopaga drugs
is essential along with vamana dravya or
vamanoaga dravya itself in full stomach
 It causes stretch reflex causes vamana
 In heena yoga / ayoga of vamana- kana,
dhatri,sidhartha, lavanodaka can be given
 In some disease vamanopaga drugs are used as
theraputic purpose
 lavanodaka as sadhyovaman-eg:alasakam, visham

 Half of vamanopaga dravyas exhibit vamaka action
 Some have opposite properties of vamana
 So it can be assumed that, the drug with vamaka
property will defnitly aid the vamana pravritti
 Where as the dravya which have properties
opposite to vamaka will inhibit the vamana
 This implies that the concept of vamanopaga is not
only limited to facilitating the vamana action of the
primary vamana dravya but also to prevent the
complication like atiyoga
Analysis of properties of drug
 Rasa
 5 drugs possess-kashaya rasa
[kovidara,karbudhara,nipa,sanapushpa and
madhu]
 Act as sthambhana
 Vamaka dravya possess urdhabhaga hara
prabhava to which sthambhana action of kashara
rasa will be antagonistic
 veerya
 Among 10-5 possess sheeta veerya
 Sthambhana property-so it will reduce the urdha
pravrthi of vamana
 Karma
 In discription of yasti madhu, which is vamanopaka
dravya is told as chardi vinasaka
 So it cannot assist the vamana action of dravya
 Rasa of kovidara and karbudhara is kashaya-they
are grahi-do not have vamaka action
 Nipa –grahi and vishtambakrth
 Apart from this ,all the remaining vamanopaga
drugs have vamaka property
 Madhu should be addedin all vamanopaga
because it cause dosa niharana
 Vidhula and arka ksheera have both vamaka and
rechaka action
 Bimbi , samapushpi and pratyak pushpi have
vamaka action
 Thus certain drugs of vamsnopaga may facilitates
the vamana pravrithi and certain dravya inhibit
the same
Use of vamanopaka in
formulation
 If we want to adjust the potency of
vamanuoshadha
Eg: durbala with bahu kapha-drug like dhamargava
it taken- indicated in bahu kapha this condition we
can give yasti-it will give optimum shodhana
without balahani
 Due to an error in selection of medicine-if dosa is
not expelled completely- //// vamana is
indicated as treatmnt- can use upaga drugs with
vamaka property eg : bimbi can be used
Conclusion
 Madhu and madhuka are most important
vamanopaga drugs
 And in this one facilitats vamana where as others
inhibit
 Vamanopaga dravya having a perticular dosa
involvements can be used for specific dosa
involvements
 So for overall it can be told that the concept of
vamanopaga dravya is not for only for assisting
the vamaks action but also to prevent the
complication also

Vamanopaga drugs

  • 3. Introduction  Vamana - first procedure in panchakarma  The procedure that eliminates morbid doshas through oral route is known as vamana  तत्र दोष निर्हरणं ऊर्हभागं वामि
  • 4. Drugs used In vamana  The drugs which induce vamana-vamaka or vamana drugs  They are of 3 types 1. Vamana dravyas- which induce vamana directly 2. Vamanopaga dravyas-which help or boost or augment the vamana kriya, which is already set in 3. Adjuvents- it is a pharmacological agent that modifies the effect of other agents eg: madhu ,saindhava
  • 5. Vamaka dravya guna  Acc to charaka  Ushna teekshna sookshma, vyavayi, vikashi  mahabhutas- vaayu agni
  • 6. Concept of vamanopaga dravyas  Vamanopaga drugs are the supportive drugs in the process of vomitting  They help-producing the act of vomiting  The function of vamanopaga drugs can be judged by the properties which they possess  used for- akhanda pana during vamana - kashaya or phanta  They helps in dissolution of vamana drugs and thus promots absorbtion, distribution and metabolisam of vamana dravya occurs
  • 7.  These drugs reduce the irritating property of vamana drugs  Vamana occurs better in full stomach. Akhanda pana by these drugs produces strech reflex and cause easy vomitting  Most of the drugs having madhura rasa and madhura vipaka and sheeta veerya, so better to use for akhanda pana  They reduses irritation ang better to avoid complications during vamana.
  • 8.  They are vayu and agni mahabhoota dominent  So they have urdhabhaga prabhavam  They also increses the palatability and give soothing effect  Effect of both drugs will help in the comfortable and less irritated vamana process
  • 9. Properties In general  Rasa –madhura rasa  Guna- laghu rooksha  Veerya- sheeta veerya  Vipaka- madhura vipaka  Karma- supporting or helping or boosting vamana along with vamaka drugs
  • 10. Difference between vamaka and vamanopaga drugs  Vamaka drugs  Main constitution of vamana kalpa  Single mim dose adequate as per samhita  Acts in faster with a min dose  A theraputic vamana should contain these drugs  Vamana drugs act on the basis of prabhava  Vamanopaga drugs  Supportive to the vamana drugs during vamana  Dosage can be changed acc to vegas during vamana  Act under the influence of vamana drugs  They induce vamana, but cannot perform thraputic vamana  Act on the basis of panchamahabhoota composition
  • 11.  Used acc to disease  Reached in all srotas of the body  Physically they are with durgandha, and with katu, tikta, kashaya rasa  Common pharmacodynamic properties includes ushna, teekshna, sookshma, vyavayi and urdha bhaga pravrtha  Depents on present condition of procedure  Mainly act on maha srotas  Most of them are madhura rasa and sheeta veerya  Thus properties differs from drug to drug
  • 12. Vamanopaga drugs  Only charaka discribed vamanopaga drugs seperatly  Others added with vamaka drugs  In cha su- 4/13  Madhu  Madhuka  Kovidara  Karbudara  Nipa  Bimbi  Sanapushpi  Arka/sadapushpi  Apamarga or pratyak pushpi
  • 13. Other vamanopaka dravyas  Ksheeram  Lavanodakam  Ikshu rasa
  • 14. Conditions for using vamanopaka dravya with vamakadravyas  Vamaka dravya cause theraputic vamana, but for making vamana easy, vamanopaga drugs can be used  In baala, sukumara, vridha etc vamanopaga drugs is essential along with vamana dravya or vamanoaga dravya itself in full stomach  It causes stretch reflex causes vamana  In heena yoga / ayoga of vamana- kana, dhatri, sidhartha, lavanodaka can be given  In some disease vamanopaga drugs are used as theraputic purpose  lavanodaka as sadhyovaman-eg:alasakam, visham
  • 15. Properperties of vamanopaga drugs Drug Rasa Guna Veerya vipaka karma madhu Madhura kashaya Lakhu rooksha sheeta katu Tridosha shamana, Chedana Madhuka Madhura Guru snigdha sheeta madhura Rakta prasadana, VP hara Kovidara and karbudhara Kashaya Laghu ruksha Sheeta Katu Krimi Kushta hara Nipa Kashaya amla Guru rooksha Sheeta katu VP hara Vidula Kashaya Amla Guru rooksha sheeta katu Used in mutra krichra etc Bimbi Tiktha Laghu Rooksha teekshna ushna katu Pitta hara vishaghna

  • 17.  Half of vamanopaga dravyas exhibit vamaka action  Some have opposite properties of vamana  So it can be assumed that, the drug with vamaka property will defnitly aid the vamana pravritti  Where as the dravya which have properties opposite to vamaka will inhibit the vamana  This implies that the concept of vamanopaga is not only limited to facilitating the vamana action of the primary vamana dravya but also to prevent the complication like atiyoga
  • 18. Analysis of properties of drug  Rasa  5 drugs possess-kashaya rasa [kovidara, karbudhara, nipa, sanapushpa and madhu]  Act as sthambhana  Vamaka dravya possess urdhabhaga hara prabhava to which sthambhana action of kashara rasa will be antagonistic  veerya  Among 10-5 possess sheeta veerya  Sthambhana property-so it will reduce the urdha pravrthi of vamana
  • 19.  Karma  In discription of yasti madhu, which is vamanopaka dravya is told as chardi vinasaka  So it cannot assist the vamana action of dravya  Rasa of kovidara and karbudhara is kashaya-they are grahi-do not have vamaka action  Nipa –grahi and vishtambakrth
  • 20.  Apart from this ,all the remaining vamanopaga drugs have vamaka property  Madhu should be addedin all vamanopaga because it cause dosa niharana  Vidhula and arka ksheera have both vamaka and rechaka action  Bimbi , samapushpi and pratyak pushpi have vamaka action  Thus certain drugs of vamsnopaga may facilitates the vamana pravrithi and certain dravya inhibit the same
  • 21. Use of vamanopaka in formulation  If we want to adjust the potency of vamanuoshadha Eg: durbala with bahu kapha-drug like dhamargava it taken- indicated in bahu kapha this condition we can give yasti-it will give optimum shodhana without balahani  Due to an error in selection of medicine-if dosa is not expelled completely- //// vamana is indicated as treatmnt- can use upaga drugs with vamaka property eg : bimbi can be used
  • 22. Conclusion  Madhu and madhuka are most important vamanopaga drugs  And in this one facilitats vamana where as others inhibit  Vamanopaga dravya having a perticular dosa involvements can be used for specific dosa involvements  So for overall it can be told that the concept of vamanopaga dravya is not for only for assisting the vamaks action but also to prevent the complication also
