This document summarizes research on the genera of Old World Pyrgotidae flies, with a special focus on species found in the Oriental Region. It describes problems with existing species classifications due to poor descriptions and unrecognizable types. The research tasks are to study all available type material from the Old World, redescribe species, test generic classifications, and revise diagnoses. An overview is provided of morphological characters used in taxonomy and proposed classifications of Pyrgotidae genera and subfamilies.
