Indian valerian is a dried rhizome, stolons and roots from the Valeriana wallichii plant found in the Himalayas, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. It has a yellowish brown color and bitter, camphoraceous taste and odor. The plant contains 1% pale brown to amber colored oil, alkaloids chatinine and valerian, and volatile compounds including borneolformate and borneol acetate. Indian valerian has antispasmodic and central nervous system depressant properties and is used as a stimulant, carminative, and tonic and in perfumes.
