INTRODUCTION:-
An abnormal connection between the rectum and the vagina.
Causes include injury during childbirth, cancer, radiation therapy
and surgical complications.
DEFINITION:-
Vaginal fistula is an abnormal passage that connects the vagina to
another organ, such as the bladder or rectum, resulting in leakage
of urine or feces into the vagina.
TYPES:-
1. Vaginal fistula that opens into urinary
tract called vesicovaginal fistula.
2. A vaginal fistula that opens into rectum
is called rectovaginal fistula
3. That opens into the colon is called
colovaginal fistula.
4. That opens into the small bowel is called
enterovaginal fistula.
CAUSES:-
Rectal damage
Inflammation in the bowel
Infection in the abdomen
Injuries during child birth
Surgery of vagina, rectum
Ulceration colitis
CLINICAL MANIFESTATION:-
Gas is released from vagina
Urine incontinence
Pus in the vagina
Foul smelling vaginal discharge
Pain during sexual intercourse
Irritation & discomfort in
vagina
DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION:-
CT SCAN
MRI
Blood test
Urine analysis
Ultrasound
Blue dye test
MEDICAL MANAGEMENT:-
Antibiotics- its given to reduce the risk of infection
Anti inflammatory drug- infliximab drugs are given to
patient of vaginal fistula to reduce the inflammation.
