Slide deck from AAM Annual Meeting in 2015: Digital Storytelling: The Dream, the Team, the Results
Media and Technology track
Tuesday, April 28, 2015
Museums can deepen audience engagement through effective storytelling. Delivering content has never been easier, due to digital interfaces and personal, portable technologies. Without a strong interpretive strategy and the right tools to craft and share our stories, we may be missing opportunities. Join this panel of experts as they describe real-world projects, share results that show the impact of digital storytelling on engagement, and demonstrate a new, free storytelling software.
Learner Outcomes
1. Attendees will learn about interpretive strategy methods and the project team approach to create and share engaging stories on digital platforms.
2. Attendees will learn about combining rapid prototyping methods with formal evaluations to create digital storytelling that delights audiences.
3. Attendees will learn how to download and use a free (open source) set of storytelling software tools developed by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

Learn why libraries around the world are changing and evolving to meet the needs of the patrons. Together we investigate ways libraries have been creating new interactive spaces, and how they are building makerspaces and fab labs. We also discuss emerging technology and how that plays a role in not only learning spaces but also what it means for content creation and curation. As a group, we will discover ways libraries can improve and further define themselves as community anchors. We will also take a virtual walk through of a redesign Brian has done for a children's public library and ways he branded and marketed the project to help find extra funding.

Netflix’s unique DVD rental service has revolutionized the industry. They successfully took the best of traditional conventions (like physical media, the U.S. Postal Service) and mixed them with new world internet-conventions. They have also effectively managed to discourage competition from both more established businesses and new entrants. The future growth of Netflix as it expands into streaming media, poses challenges in legal, infrastructure/technology, and through additional costs. In order to remain competitive, it is imperative that Netflix partner with companies with global reach to overcome these challenges. This presentation was part of an MBA class assignment to audit and industry in the the technology sector. The presentation has multiple authors listed on the title page. If you would like copies of the executive summary, complete S.W.O.T. analysis, and/or the transcript of the presentation please PRIVATE MESSAGE ME and I will email it to you.

Consumer Science and Product Development at Netflix - OSCON 2012Matt Marenghi
At the core of product innovation at Netflix is consumer science; Netflix constantly tests and iterates on new ideas for every aspect of the streaming service. This experiment-oriented culture uses data from actual customer usage of the product to quickly understand which ideas are great.
At the 2012 O'Reilly Open Source Convention (OSCON), Rochelle King and Matt Marenghi described the consumer science process in detail. They demonstrated how it can apply to everything from a new UI concept to a new back-end algorithm. They also discussed how the company culture and the product development approach inter-relate, and shared how this customer focus drives decision-making at every level of the company. They also discussed some of the limitations of consumer science, and how to make decisions where science can’t easily shine a light.
Researched Netflix's existing market and recommended strategies for them to develop.
Conducted SWOT analysis, product and market analysis
Based on their market growth ad financial overview, developed marketing strategies
Developed BCG Matrix and understood Porter 5 forces to estimate the competitive strategy
Algorithmic Music Recommendations at SpotifyChris Johnson
In this presentation I introduce various Machine Learning methods that we utilize for music recommendations and discovery at Spotify. Specifically, I focus on Implicit Matrix Factorization for Collaborative Filtering, how to implement a small scale version using python, numpy, and scipy, as well as how to scale up to 20 Million users and 24 Million songs using Hadoop and Spark.
Interactive Recommender Systems with Netflix and SpotifyChris Johnson
Interactive recommender systems enable the user to steer the received recommendations in the desired direction through explicit interaction with the system. In the larger ecosystem of recommender systems used on a website, it is positioned between a lean-back recommendation experience and an active search for a specific piece of content. Besides this aspect, we will discuss several parts that are especially important for interactive recommender systems, including the following: design of the user interface and its tight integration with the algorithm in the back-end; computational efficiency of the recommender algorithm; as well as choosing the right balance between exploiting the feedback from the user as to provide relevant recommendations, and enabling the user to explore the catalog and steer the recommendations in the desired direction.
In particular, we will explore the field of interactive video and music recommendations and their application at Netflix and Spotify. We outline some of the user-experiences built, and discuss the approaches followed to tackle the various aspects of interactive recommendations. We present our insights from user studies and A/B tests.
The tutorial targets researchers and practitioners in the field of recommender systems, and will give the participants a unique opportunity to learn about the various aspects of interactive recommender systems in the video and music domain. The tutorial assumes familiarity with the common methods of recommender systems.
The tablet is changing the way we experience Television, giving us new ways to discover, interact with, and enjoy TV programming. mPortal explores how the tablet is shifting the TV viewing experience in this presentation.

Character Development, for students, by students!mediaplaylab
Cyberwellness has always been a ministry initiative, but in recent years has increasingly gained importance nation-wide as the evolving Internet and media landscapes bring about various issues with it.
Innova JC’s JC1 Cyberwellness Civics Lesson was done in collaboration with Media Development Authority (MDA), to bring about character development to IJC students.
All JC1 New Media Arts CCA students (known as NMA Cyberwellness Ambassadors) researched on cyberwellness topics that interest and benefit them as youths (social networking and gaming addiction). The students then collated materials (videos, case studies) to be used in the lessons.
They then leveraged on the weekly Civics Programme to extend its reach to the entire JC1 cohort of students. This programme is also part of Innova New Media Education Programme where students equip Innovians with the skills to be safe and responsible users of the Internet.

Transforming Brand Perception and Boosting Profitabilityaaryangarg12
In today's digital era, the dynamics of brand perception, consumer behavior, and profitability have been profoundly reshaped by the synergy of branding, social media, and website design. This research paper investigates the transformative power of these elements in influencing how individuals perceive brands and products and how this transformation can be harnessed to drive sales and profitability for businesses.
Through an exploration of brand psychology and consumer behavior, this study sheds light on the intricate ways in which effective branding strategies, strategic social media engagement, and user-centric website design contribute to altering consumers' perceptions. We delve into the principles that underlie successful brand transformations, examining how visual identity, messaging, and storytelling can captivate and resonate with target audiences.
Methodologically, this research employs a comprehensive approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. Real-world case studies illustrate the impact of branding, social media campaigns, and website redesigns on consumer perception, sales figures, and profitability. We assess the various metrics, including brand awareness, customer engagement, conversion rates, and revenue growth, to measure the effectiveness of these strategies.
The results underscore the pivotal role of cohesive branding, social media influence, and website usability in shaping positive brand perceptions, influencing consumer decisions, and ultimately bolstering sales and profitability. This paper provides actionable insights and strategic recommendations for businesses seeking to leverage branding, social media, and website design as potent tools to enhance their market position and financial success.
