This document summarizes a study on using social media to foster learning connections. The study had two parts: the first involved using Facebook for asynchronous discussions in an English composition course, and the second involved graduate students developing personal learning networks through social media in an online course. Key findings included that Facebook discussions were no better or worse than the learning management system, but had technical limitations. Students had positive and negative reactions to using social media, with some seeing the benefits of connecting to experts, while others found it overwhelming. Overall, social media helped students make connections beyond the classroom and develop personal learning networks, though guiding and listening to students was important.

Delegates had the opportunity to share and evaluate good practice in implementing and developing online teaching resources and to reflect on how to develop their own teaching practice, using technologies available in most institutions.

First, this paper explores various concepts of the ‘face-to-face’ learning and teaching experience. It also challenges the current views of ‘face-to-face’ mode of content delivery as a feature limited to the physical classroom. This study is based on the use of the Collaborate Ultra for teaching in the postgraduate online TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) programs at Bond University, Gold Coast, Australia. These online TESOL programs aim to deliver not just the subject content but also the ‘online face-to-face’ experience to university students. The project uses quantitative and qualitative research methods to analyse the effectiveness of the Collaborate Ultra platform in addressing the needs and expectations of the new learners. The research sample comprises data collected from teacher and student surveys and the Bond University teaching evaluation results. The ultimate objective of this project is to propose a new definition of ‘face-to-face’ as a feature also applicable to online learning and to emphasize the critical role of the Collaborate Ultra tools in making it possible.

This presentation discusses how post-secondary education students with disabilities can also participate in and benefit from using social media tools and services like blogs, wikis, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Second Life.
This virtual Community of Practice session looks at the work CTEL have done on pilot programmes in the institute and how we can apply the learnings to other programmes in the coming academic year. We will explore the technology we hope to have in place in September to lectueres to get started with ease if it's something they are interested in.
We will also explore some simple steps you can use to encourage communication, collaboaration, peer support and community on your modules and programmes.
Finally, this is a great opportunity for us to get your feedback in this area so that we can focus on building the best experience for lectuers and students over the summer months and have it ready for September.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
