This document summarizes a qualitative research study on undergraduate student scholarly habits. The study used interviews with faculty and students as well as mapping diaries, photo surveys, and research interviews to understand how students study, do research, and complete assignments. Preliminary results from the mapping diaries and photo surveys showed what frustrates students during the day, what they look forward to, what they carry with them, where they study, and places in the library they do not like. Faculty interviews revealed perceptions of student weaknesses in thinking, analyzing, and putting in effort, as well as a disconnect between students and the library. The next steps discussed were to further analyze the data, seek additional funding, conduct follow-up research at CUNY schools,

At the CNI spring 2012 meeting, we presented on a new collaborative journal publishing project from The Fembot Collective and the University of Oregon (UO) Libraries, Ada: A Journal of Gender, New Media, and Technology. The Fembot Collective is a collaborative of feminist media scholars, producers, and artists engaged with the intersection of new media and technology and scholarly communication. One aspiration of this project was to reclaim the means of scholarly production through a community-centered model of open peer review and multi-modal publication processes. As a work in progress, Ada has continuously evolved to meet the needs of diverse authors, readers, and commentators. In the face of changing scholarly communication practices, the Fembot and library collaboration offers an alternative system of open-access publication and review that recaptures academic production structures in favor of cross-disciplinary, multi-modal, collaborative knowledge. Our community standards state that “responding is political work” emphasizing a space that demands constant redirection and active participation by its collaborators in order to generate new expressions of feminist open access scholarship over time. Now in our third year of publication and working on our ninth issue, we will review lessons learned about audience, production, infrastructure, design and assessment. We will discuss the ways in which our intervention has been transformed by, while also transforming, discussions about participatory media, open and collaborative peer review, production costs, and the intersections of technical and intellectual labor.

Information Literacy Instruction topics and exercises for Teaching Assistants to use, in order to help their undergraduate students improve their skills at identifying, locating, evaluating, and using information effectively and ethically.
Today’s students employ diverse search strategies to discover content in support of their studies. With search results serving as the staple of the digital ecosystem, creating that experience hinges on a deep understanding of user needs at that critical juncture. While usage metrics may reveal the user’s clicks, the story behind those choices may remain untold. And as usability testing proves useful in identifying areas for improvement, going off-script to capture user pain points is not always sanctioned. Looking outside the confines of traditional research methods allows capturing the “free-range” insights of today’s researchers. This presentation will feature the experiences of the User Research Team at EBSCO Information Services as they set out to illuminate the true user journey of scholarly research. Attendees will learn what what page designs elicit smiles, smirks, confusion or delight. Learnings from ethnographic studies will be shared, with insights about the complex feelings students have about searching for information and their diverse strategies for evaluating search results.

Understanding this group’s online research and information-seeking strategies are critical when one considers that these future graduates will be occupying leadership positions in education and determining educational policy. How they evaluate information resources will impact policy and determine the importance they place on specific informational resources. Each technological age has been marked by a shift in how the industrial platform enables companies to rethink their business processes and create wealth. In the talk I argue that we are limiting our view of what this next industrial/digital age can offer because of how we read, measure and through that perceive the world (how we cherry pick data). Companies are locked in metrics and quantitative measures, data that can fit into a spreadsheet. And by that they see the digital transformation merely as an efficiency tool to the fossil fuel age. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
