Basidiomycetes fungi, including Ganoderma lucidum, have a variety of uses such as providing nutrition and medical remedies. The mushroom G. lucidum has been used for a long time to cure liver problems, heart condition, asthma, cancer, high blood pressure and arthritis. Recently, it has been associated with boosting immune systems in HIV infected persons. It is for these reasons that the mushroom has attracted a lot of attention leading to proposals of cultivating to increase supply to the Southern African market. This study was initiated with the objective of determining the uses of Ganoderma species and other mushrooms by local communities in Oshana and Ohangwena Regions of northern Namibia. A survey was conducted in the 10% households of each of the two northern regions of Namibia. A questionnaire for face-to-face interviews was designed and applied to the two Regions. The information survey has revealed that Ganoderma species have a variety of other traditional uses including veterinary applications, while other five species of mushrooms are used as nerve calming tonics and as treatment of skin infections. The study found out that those interviewed in Ohangwena Region use more mushrooms for medicinal purposes than those interviewed in Oshana Region.

Ethnobotanical survey of the medicinal plants in the central mountains (North...Innspub Net
An ethnobotanical survey for the wild medicinal plants in the central high mountains extending from northern to central Jordan has been carried out. A special questionnaire is prepared to test for the medicinal uses of the local wild medicinal plants in the study area. The information such as the Arabic local name, parts used for medication, methods of preparation, purpose of use, doses and any other remarks, were all collected from direct contact visits to local people by the researchers of this study. The total numbers of recorded species in all the study sites are 108 species belonging to 33 families. The families Asteraceae and Lamiaceae have recorded the highest species of medicinal plants. A number of 25 plants species were found to be more frequently used by the local people in the studied areas, 38 species were found to be used more occasionally than the remaining 22 species. Visits for the available herbalist’s shops in the study area were made for all the sites of the study area. The age range of the questioned sample of the people who were interviewed was ranging between 40-65- years old. It is learned from the study that the use of wild medicinal plants is highly recommended and still practiced by the majority of local people in the study area. It has been observed that the study area is very rich in medicinal plants, where some species are becoming degraded and over cultivated. The knowledge of using wild herbs in traditional folk medicine is basically more common among the elderly rather than the young generation in most of the visited domestic areas. However, the use of medicinal plants by the locals are causing great declining of the diversity of many plant species growing in all sites visited by the authors.

The region harbor different tribal communities like Lepcha, Bhutia, Sherpa, Limboo, Newar, Chettri, Bhaun, Rai, Tamang, Sunwar, and Gurung. Due to the diversity of different tribal communities, traditional healers of different groups are found in this area. Medicinal importances of different plants were recorded after conducting interview with traditional healers, old man, women of different tribal communities of the area. The traditional medicinal uses of 50 plants species belonging to 38 families are reported in my study.

In Ethiopia, the use of traditional medicine for primary health care is becoming accepted and popular. However, it is under great risks when looked from the point of losing the knowledge transfer and the degradation of the vital medicinal plants. Thus, this review was initiated to briefly look into how is the very common way of transferring indigenous knowledge and to look at the threats & conservation effort of medicinal plants in the country. The review indicates that indigenous knowledge of medicinal plants is transferred from a practitioner father to elder son as he is he is getting older. However, if there is no elder son it would be passed over to any one among the family who is supposed to be loyal to keep the knowledge secret; but if the practitioner does not have families, the knowledge passes to any one among his relatives who is believed to keep the knowledge secret. This review also showed that the main reasons for the degradation of medicinal plants in Ethiopia are environmental degradation, agricultural expansion, deforestation, over harvesting of species and invasive alien species.

An ethnobotanical study of medicinal plants used to treat skin ailments was conducted in Woreda Tahtay Adiyabo and Merebleke, Tigray, Northern Ethiopia between December 2013 and June 2014 to document the use, conservation and management of medicinal plants. To collect accurate information, 100 informants (80 men and 20 women, aged from 25-70) were selected purposively. Ethno botanical data were collected through semi structured interview and field observation and analyzed using descriptive statistical methods and informant consensus factor. A total of 40 medicinal plants distributed across 27 families and 39 genera, which the informants confirmed that they are used to treat 12 human skin ailments. Woody plants comprised the largest number accounting for 26 species (65%). Leaves were the most frequently required plant parts (58 %) followed by seeds (12%). Remedies were mostly prepared from fresh plant materials, mostly from single plant species and crushing (48%) was the common method of preparation to make the remedy. The highest informant consensus was documented for Xanthium strumanium and Ziziphus spina-christi by 50(50%) informants to both for their medicinal value in treating Tinia capitis and Tinia corporis respectively. Drought and agricultural expansion are the major threats to medicinal plants. The local people of the two Woredas have used traditional botanical knowledge to treat skin ailments but the availability of plants is rare. Consequently, the traditional healers and the local people should be aware on how to use plants for various purposes and the traditional healers should grow some plants in their home gardens.

ABSTRACT The documentation of the biodiversity and it is traditional, as well as medicinal uses by the ethnic communities, have assumed priority due to the misuse and rampant loss of biodiversity, the emerging threats of biopiracy and the increasing patent wars on bioresources. Since, the medicinal plants are very important for the production of various drugs because thousands of years ago, these plants are used by our forefathers for the treatment of various diseases. Therefore, now a day, these medicinal plants are used for the production of various drugs as well as to cure various diseases. Though there are a good number of publications on ethnobotany on particular and different tribes but the present studies were carried out to explore the vascular plant diversity and investigate the ethnomedicinal potential and their conservation status in the villages of Guna district, Madhya Pradesh, India. In this research survey, only medicinal plant, their local names and their medicinal uses were interviewed and presented. The information was obtained from local informant i.e. Vaidhays, Hakeems and Ayurvedic Practitioners etc. having knowledge about medicinal plants. The paper deals about some medicinal plants used by the Bheel primitive tribe of Guna district, Madhya Pradesh, India. The paper enumerates 25 medicinal plant species belonging to eighteen families used by Bheel tribes for curing various ailments among human beings and animals.

BACKGROUND:
Limited health facilities and malnutrition are major problems in the Karakorum Range of Northern Pakistan, often resulting in various human disorders. Since centuries, however, local communities in these areas have developed traditional methods for treating various ailments and local foods capes that can be significant for devising public health and nutritional policies. This study was intended to document the ethnobotanical knowledge of the local peoples in the Tormik Valley, especially in the medical and food domains.
METHODS:
Field trips were undertaken in 14 different villages of the study area from 2010 to 2012. Ethnobotanical data were gathered using semi-structured interviews and group conversation with 69 informants. Details about local uses of plant species were recorded along with demographic characteristics of the visited communities. Relative frequency citation index (RFCi) and preference ranking index (PRi) tools were applied to determine the cultural significance of the reported species.
RESULTS:
Sixty-three plant species, with a predominance of Asteraceae and Fabaceae family members, as well as their detailed folk uses were documented. Forty-three percent of the species were used to treat various diseases, 21 % were consumed as wild fruits and vegetables and 53 % of the species had multipurpose applications. Thymus linearis Benth, Hippophae rhamnoides ssp. turkestanica L. and Convolvulus arvensis L. were found to be the most utilized medicinal plant species, i.e. those with significant RFCi values (0.54, 0.51 and 0.48, respectively). Betula utilis D. Don was the most versatile taxon (seven different ways of utilization); being this species a common and easily accessible subalpine tree and then under anthropogenic pressure, the implementation of concrete strategies aimed at its in-situ and ex-situ conservation is strongly recommended.
CONCLUSION:
The valleys in the Karakorum Mountains in the Northern Pakistan host significant Traditional Knowledge on local food and medicinal plant species, which need to be reconsidered and cautiously re-evaluated by ethnopharmacologists, and public health/nutrition actors. Furthermore, germane trans-disciplinary investigations are suggested to ensure the dynamic conservation of precious local knowledge systems, as well as plant diversity in Pakistani mountain regions.

Objective: This study aims at providing a comprehensive documentation on ethanoveterinary plant knowledge of the tribal people in order to preserve the fost-eroding knowledge and resources of the kalasapadi hills, Pappireddipatti revenue Tk, Dharmapuri.Methods: Field work was conducted from 2015“2016. Moreover 36 informants were interviewed. First, successive oral free listing and semi-structured interviews were performed. The veterinary diseases as described by the informants were categorized according to the symptoms they cause and the organs they affect. Information on the cited plants, informant consensus factor (ICF) and fidelity level (FL) was calculated based on use reports.Results: Utilization of 49 plant species, belonging to 30 genera under 31 families, has been recorded against livestock ailments. Plant parts, such as leaf, root, flower, bark, resin, and rhizome, are used in the preparation. Among the plant parts, bark is predominately used. Most of the preparations include parts of more than one plant as the ingredients, and many of such combined preparations are used for treating more than one ailment.Conclusion: According to the local people, the most often mentioned species have high medicinal potential. At the same time the comprehensive pharmacological investigations of the herbal plants will be helpful in development of new drugs for a particular condition. There is a need to conserve the knowledge of medicinal plant use in the Kalasapadi hills for future generations and to incorporate it into existing livestock health care services. Farmers’ Constraints In Rice Production In South - East Nigeriaresearchagriculture
The study was carried out in South East Nigeria to evaluate the
socioeconomic attributes of rice farmers and identify the major constraints facing the
rice enterprise in the area. The study relied mainly on primary data obtained by
questionnaire and interview administered on a total of 158 farmers across four states
that constitute the South East Agro
-
ecological area. Descriptive statistics was mainly
used to analyze the data collected. Findings show that farmers in rice production were
dominated by married, literate, male farmers. Major constraints to rice production
include poor extension contact, lack of finance, high cost of agrochemical, lack of
inorganic fertilizer, lack of processing facilities/ standard measure for rice, lack of
credit, and delay in supply of improved rice varieties. It was recommended that the
government should expose farmers to skills and knowledge required to overcome the
constraints in rice production through the development of extension
training/ teaching service, development of rural infrastructure, irrigation/storage/
processing facilities and credit supply at affordable interest rates.

ABSTRACT The documentation of the biodiversity and it is traditional, as well as medicinal uses by the ethnic communities, have assumed priority due to the misuse and rampant loss of biodiversity, the emerging threats of biopiracy and the increasing patent wars on bioresources. Since, the medicinal plants are very important for the production of various drugs because thousands of years ago, these plants are used by our forefathers for the treatment of various diseases. Therefore, now a day, these medicinal plants are used for the production of various drugs as well as to cure various diseases. Though there are a good number of publications on ethnobotany on particular and different tribes but the present studies were carried out to explore the vascular plant diversity and investigate the ethnomedicinal potential and their conservation status in the villages of Guna district, Madhya Pradesh, India. In this research survey, only medicinal plant, their local names and their medicinal uses were interviewed and presented. The information was obtained from local informant i.e. Vaidhays, Hakeems and Ayurvedic Practitioners etc. having knowledge about medicinal plants. The paper deals about some medicinal plants used by the Bheel primitive tribe of Guna district, Madhya Pradesh, India. The paper enumerates 25 medicinal plant species belonging to eighteen families used by Bheel tribes for curing various ailments among human beings and animals.

BACKGROUND:
Limited health facilities and malnutrition are major problems in the Karakorum Range of Northern Pakistan, often resulting in various human disorders. Since centuries, however, local communities in these areas have developed traditional methods for treating various ailments and local foods capes that can be significant for devising public health and nutritional policies. This study was intended to document the ethnobotanical knowledge of the local peoples in the Tormik Valley, especially in the medical and food domains.
METHODS:
Field trips were undertaken in 14 different villages of the study area from 2010 to 2012. Ethnobotanical data were gathered using semi-structured interviews and group conversation with 69 informants. Details about local uses of plant species were recorded along with demographic characteristics of the visited communities. Relative frequency citation index (RFCi) and preference ranking index (PRi) tools were applied to determine the cultural significance of the reported species.
RESULTS:
Sixty-three plant species, with a predominance of Asteraceae and Fabaceae family members, as well as their detailed folk uses were documented. Forty-three percent of the species were used to treat various diseases, 21 % were consumed as wild fruits and vegetables and 53 % of the species had multipurpose applications. Thymus linearis Benth, Hippophae rhamnoides ssp. turkestanica L. and Convolvulus arvensis L. were found to be the most utilized medicinal plant species, i.e. those with significant RFCi values (0.54, 0.51 and 0.48, respectively). Betula utilis D. Don was the most versatile taxon (seven different ways of utilization); being this species a common and easily accessible subalpine tree and then under anthropogenic pressure, the implementation of concrete strategies aimed at its in-situ and ex-situ conservation is strongly recommended.
CONCLUSION:
The valleys in the Karakorum Mountains in the Northern Pakistan host significant Traditional Knowledge on local food and medicinal plant species, which need to be reconsidered and cautiously re-evaluated by ethnopharmacologists, and public health/nutrition actors. Furthermore, germane trans-disciplinary investigations are suggested to ensure the dynamic conservation of precious local knowledge systems, as well as plant diversity in Pakistani mountain regions.

Objective: This study aims at providing a comprehensive documentation on ethanoveterinary plant knowledge of the tribal people in order to preserve the fost-eroding knowledge and resources of the kalasapadi hills, Pappireddipatti revenue Tk, Dharmapuri.Methods: Field work was conducted from 2015“2016. Moreover 36 informants were interviewed. First, successive oral free listing and semi-structured interviews were performed. The veterinary diseases as described by the informants were categorized according to the symptoms they cause and the organs they affect. Information on the cited plants, informant consensus factor (ICF) and fidelity level (FL) was calculated based on use reports.Results: Utilization of 49 plant species, belonging to 30 genera under 31 families, has been recorded against livestock ailments. Plant parts, such as leaf, root, flower, bark, resin, and rhizome, are used in the preparation. Among the plant parts, bark is predominately used. Most of the preparations include parts of more than one plant as the ingredients, and many of such combined preparations are used for treating more than one ailment.Conclusion: According to the local people, the most often mentioned species have high medicinal potential. At the same time the comprehensive pharmacological investigations of the herbal plants will be helpful in development of new drugs for a particular condition. There is a need to conserve the knowledge of medicinal plant use in the Kalasapadi hills for future generations and to incorporate it into existing livestock health care services. Farmers’ Constraints In Rice Production In South - East Nigeriaresearchagriculture
The study was carried out in South East Nigeria to evaluate the
socioeconomic attributes of rice farmers and identify the major constraints facing the
rice enterprise in the area. The study relied mainly on primary data obtained by
questionnaire and interview administered on a total of 158 farmers across four states
that constitute the South East Agro

ecological area. Descriptive statistics was mainly
used to analyze the data collected. Findings show that farmers in rice production were
dominated by married, literate, male farmers. Major constraints to rice production
include poor extension contact, lack of finance, high cost of agrochemical, lack of
inorganic fertilizer, lack of processing facilities/ standard measure for rice, lack of
credit, and delay in supply of improved rice varieties. It was recommended that the
government should expose farmers to skills and knowledge required to overcome the
constraints in rice production through the development of extension
training/ teaching service, development of rural infrastructure, irrigation/storage/
processing facilities and credit supply at affordable interest rates.

) is the most widely grown type of millet in
Africa and Asia. Pearl millet is well adapted to growing in areas characterized by
drought, low soil fertility, and high temperature. It grow well in soil with high salinity
or low pH.
In northern Namibia, pearl millet grains are stored in wooden, plastic and
cement containers for future consumption and also seeds for the next planting
season. This study looked at viability, germination and sugar content of pearl millet
grains in different containers after 0

Germination and
viability of pearl millet grains decreased as the period of storage increased, and this
was more obvious especially in cement and wooden containers. Viability in wooden
container ranged between 64

storage. Pearl millet grains were found to contain high amounts of starch and sucrose
for the first four months and it decreases as storage time increase. As the duration

and sucrose content in cement storage than in the other storage facilities.

Factors affecting agricultural sustainable activities among wheat producersresearchagriculture
The sustainability of agricultural activities has been emphasized in many
studies. The main objective of this study is to determine the major factors affecting
the adoption of
sustainable activities among wheat producers in Marvdasht county in
Iran. The Survey research was used and the sample consists of 178 farmers that
selected with simple random sampling technique from 10 villages. Findings showed a
positive correlation between educational level, knowledge on sustainability, attending
on educational classes, participation in extension activities, social norms and
conducting sustainable agricultural activities. The regression findings showed that
age, educational level, knowledge on sustainability, agricultural income, total land of
family, attending on educational classes, participation in extension activities, social
norms, controllability of production factors were major variables to explain variability
in adoption of sustainable activities among wheat producers. The study has provided
recommendations to improve of adoption rate in sustainable agricultural activities.

This survey was aimed to determine the indigenous
knowledge of communities around Lake Victoria Region
regarding the treatment and management of Tuberculosis.
Opinion leaders suggested the names and locations of known
Traditional Medical Practitioners (TMPs) in the study locale. A
sample of 102 TMPS from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania residing
around Lake Victoria Basis in East Africa participated in the
study. Snow ball sampling technique was used to draw 22 TB
patients claimed to have been treated by TMPs. It was
established that local people have remarkable detailed knowledge
of species identity, characteristics and their specific uses in the
treatment and management of Tuberculosis. The main parts of
the plants used include the root, bark, leaves and seeds in various
combinations. It is concluded that local people have vast
knowledge regarding the treatment of tuberculosis which is
largely confined to the elderly, exploit the medicinal plants nonsustainably,
and use crude plant extracts as concoctions for
treating and/or managing TB. It is recommended that traditional
knowledge should be documented, and top priority be given to
the conservation of the habitat by launching special programs for
raising people’s awareness about sustainable utilization of
medicinal plant species and conservation.

Ethnobotany is a subfield of botany that studies the relationships between traditional societies and the plants in their environments. In its widest sense, ethnobotany is the study of how plants have shaped the worldviews and historical narratives of indigenous peoples, as well as how these people evaluate the efficacy of modern scientific knowledge. Ethnobotanical research may provide light on the complex relationships between plants and indigenous peoples, both in the past and the present. While modern society may look down on our ancestors as primitive and barbaric, they really helped us advance by teaching us how to utilize plants for food, medicine, chemicals, colors, wood products, textiles, and so on. As this study progressed, it became abundantly evident that the vast body of past studies on rural and tribal medicines in North Eastern India had just scratched the surface. There is still plenty to do and write down before it's all gone forever. Interviews and on-location observations were used extensively in this study's investigation. The information on medicinal plants and interview notes were written down in field notebooks. Traditional plant knowledge and the usage of curative wild herbs by the Marakwet people were the focus of a study. As a result of interviews with traditional healers and community people, a list of the plants' traditional names was developed. As much as sixty percent of plant names are same, it is clear that traditional names for medicinal plants are vanishing. Nearly all locals (94.8 percent) knew which traditional medicinal herbs were best for treating stomach problems, followed by diarrhea (70.7 percent), chest discomfort (65.5 percent), and typhoid (63.3 percent). Locals have a low knowledge index (23.6%) of curative plants, according to traditional healers.

Modern approaches of ethnobotanical studies on various medicinal plants in Sundarban region are to
create awareness among the locality along with all over India. The aim of the studies of medicinal plants
will focus the cause and the help of treatment diseases. The investigation deals about 10 medicinal plants
which are used by local people throughout the Sundarban region. Ethnomedicinal plants information were
taken by the interview of ojha and local old villagers throughout the study period. In various villages of
this region, it is found that ethnobotanical medicinal plants are used to treat common problems (such as
injuries, stomachache, abdominal disorder, and skin problem). By the field visits and knowledge gather
from the villagers, the study is done to motivate further research on medicinal plants which may lead to
discovery of novel drugs in the fields of research and development study.
Ethnopharmacological survey of Layyah District Punjab, Pakistaniosrjce
Ethnobotanical survey was conducted district Layyah, during 2010. The survey was conducted along
with Chowk Azam road in some of villages including chaks i.e chak no
145.A/T.D.A,146.A/T.D.A,151/T.D.A,128/T.D.A and chak no 120/T.D.A tehsil and district Layyah. From each
village 20 People were selected randomly by lottery method for consultation. For more ethnobotanic
information some traditional healers were interviewed. Present study focused on local inhabitants who use
traditional resources for self-medication with particular reference to ethnopharmacological application of plant
species for diseases and natural cosmetics. The study was carried out by interviewing respondents in remote
sites (lack of health facilities, poverty and extensive use of medicinal plants). In total 100 informants were
interviewed on their management of diseases. The respondents were old age women (10%), men (60%) and
traditional healers (30%) themselves and had knowledge on the medicinal uses of the plants for the said
purpose. To collect data systematically on disease management questionnaires and discussions were applied. A
total of 100 plants have been reported to use traditionally to cure different ailments in district Layyah, Punjab
during survey. About 13 plant species were reported for their use to cure pains in different body ailments.
Among these Eugenia aromatica, Terminalia chebula, Mentha microphylla, Accassia Arabica, Eucalyptus
camaldulences, Foeniculum vulgare, Coriandrum sativum, Coriandrum sativum, Accasia nilotica, Brassica
compestris, Aloe vera, Allium sativum and Zingiber officinale constituted the major medications. About 3
plantspecies had been revealed as cure in fever. Melia azedarach Ocimum sanctum, Peucedanum graveolens.
Miscellaneous uses of plants consisted of for treatment of wounds, flue and catarrh, hypertension, piles, general
debility, cough, fever, Diabetes, Haemorrhoid problems and Spermatorrhoea like problems etc. Some of the
reported species are wild and rare, this demands an urgent attention to conserve such vital resources so as to
optimize their use in the primary health care system.

Field studies were conducted to investigate the medicinal plants through identification, collection and domestication of plants in Southwestern, Nigeria.
Semi-structured Questionnaires, personal interview, group consensus and review of available records showed that 52 botanicals belonging to 29 families were used in treating different ailments affecting ruminant animals in the study area. It was observed that 22 of the botanicals were described as being abundant. Eight out of all the botanicals were endangered and domesticated. The initial growth of the domesticated plants shows that the plants have relatively slow growth of survival, thus conservation measures were proposed. Various sources at which the identified plants could be derived were ranging from forest area, common area, household farm, household area while some were purchased. The type of plants found in a location is dependent on the geographical location. Thus, 38.9 % of the plants species were found at the primary source and this form the highest among the various sources. It was also discovered that the medicinal plants were used for other purposes such as erosion control, shade, wind breaker, boundary demarcation, animal fodder among others.

Aim of study To document, accumulate and widely disseminate the massive indigenous knowledge of century's practiced therapeutic uses of medicinal plants by the local people living in this area. Materials and methods A total of 134 local inhabitants (78 male and 56 female) were interviewed through questionnaire method. The data obtained were quantitatively analyzed through the use value, fidelity level index and relative frequency citation. Plants specimen were preserved and mounted on herbarium sheets and labeled, cataloged and deposited with voucher numbers in Hazara University Herbarium, Mansehra, Pakistan (HUP). Results 74 plant species belonging to 70 genera and 42 families were documented in the current study. These medicinal plant species are used commonly as an ethno medicine against 56 various diseases such as digestive disorder, cough, pain and skin diseases etc. Herbaceous plant species were the dominant among plants studied which were 57% of the total plants, followed by shrubs (23%) and trees (20%). Asteraceae was the leading family among collected medicinal plant species (10.81%). Maximum medicinal plant species were used for treatment of digestive disorders (9.09%) and cough (7.44%). Most widely part used is leaf (27.9%), followed by fruit (13.5%) and seed (13.5%) for the treatment of different ailments by the traditional healers. The medicinal plant species with greater use values were Berberis lycium (0.91) and Cannabis sativa (0.81). The medicinal plant species with maximum fidelity level were Ziziphus jujuba (100%) and Lonicera caprifolium (92.31%) whereas the medicinal with most relative frequency citation were B. lycium (0.313), Ziziphus nummularia (0.276). The comparative result reveals that 36% of medicinal plant species were reported for the first time from Abbottabad regarding their uses, whereas 26% of plant species were reported with different medicinal uses. Brugmansia suaveolens and Allium griffithianum were recorded for the first time from Pakistan as well as from other countries across the globe for currently reported medicinal uses. Conclusion The current study revealed the importance to document and launch list of all possible plants that are used in ethno medicinal practices in the study area. Future antimicrobial, antivirals, and pharmacological studies are required to ratify the efficacy and safety of the medicinal plants species.

Ancient man had found the ways and means of usage of plants to cure his health disorders. Plant
induced increases in allergic rhinitis like high fever the distinct seasonal sources of plant pollen, trees, grasses,
and ragweed. Quantity and seasonality of pollen depend in large part on plant responses to climatic and
meteorological variables. However, changes in such variables are likely as a result of anthropogenic influences
on levels of atmospheric CO2, and enhancement of the greenhouse effect, with subsequent impacts on plant
growth and pollen production. The knowledge of preparation of medicines of various parts such as root, tuber,
stem, bark, leaves, flower, fruit, seed, and whole plant, formed a parallel system of medicine the ethno medicine,
which exclusively uses the plants and herbal products for the treatment of diseases. Fever is one such common
disease characterized by an elevation of body temperature above the normal range of 36.5 – 37.5o C (98-
100oF). This triggers increased muscle tone and shivering. The present study emphasized the documentation
and analysis of indigenous herbal medicinal knowledge existing in curing different types of fever by different
communities of Adilabad district. The survey in the rural areas of Adilabad district was carried out during

L.) is one of the most problematic
pests in smallholder vegetable production, causing significant yield losses in heavy
infestations. Current control strategy focuses on use of synthetic pesticides that
consequently lead to decimation of natural enemies, development of insect
resistance and resurgence and upset biodiversity. Botanical pesticides have been used
widely in smallholder farmers but not much documented literature exists on efficacy
of these products. A field trial was done to assess the efficacy of crude aqueous
extracts of

Allium sativum
and
Solanum incanum
in controlling
Brevicoryne brassicae
in
Brassica napus
production. The trial was laid in a randomized
complete block design (RCBD) with five treatments replicated four times. The five

24 hours after the application of treatments and total plant fresh weight per each

Influence of Long Term Nitrogen and Potassium Fertilization on the Biochemist...researchagriculture
As the tea plantation in hilly tracts are located in slopes, the management of
fertilizer regimes is somewhat challengeable due to leaching which in turn affect the
quality of tea soil. In light of this fact the present study was focused to determine the
quality of tea soil in terms of the evaluation of certain physical and biological
characteristics as influenced by various dosage of fertilizer applications. The impact of long
term nitrogen and potassium fertilization on biochemical characteristics and microbial
activities in tea soil has been analyzed in the present study. Different sources and rates of
nitrogen (ammonium sulphate and urea), and potassium (muriate of potash) were tested
at two soil depths (0
-
10 cm and 10
-
20 cm) and for two seasons (premonsoon and
monsoon). The acidic tea soil was further acidified with nitrogen application and the
extent of acidification varied with the fertilizer type and season. Soil respiration rates were
higher in 0
-
10 cm soils and were positively related to soil nitrogen and potassium
concentrations. Among the soil enzymes analyzed, urease activity exhibited different
trends in the two soil depths at different seasons. Urease activity tended to increase with
increasing potassium application rates, whereas higher cellulase activity was associated
with lower nitrogen application rates. This study clearly indicates that the soil quality
depends on the fertilizer application rates and season.
Anther Culture of Pepper: Morphological Charactersitics of Fruits of Androgen...researchagriculture
The presented study describes the effectiveness of induced androgenesis in
in vitro pepper anther culture. The aim of this study was the establishment of
effective technology for induction of embryogenesis in pepper anther culture;
development of the embryos into plantlets; successful adaptation and acclimatization
of plantlets from sterile to greenhouse conditions, and the breeding process of
obtained androgenetic pepper lines in the plastic tunnel conditions. From 19 pepper
genotypes under investigation, 12 possessed potential for embryo formation in
anther culture. After the acclimatization and adaptation of plantlets, seed material
from four pepper genotypes were collected: Piran, Kurtovska kapija SR, Zlaten medal
SR and Féherözön. From the collected seed material, breeding processes of
androgenetic pepper lines was set up in plastic tunnel (from April

October
2007
-
2010). The pepper genotypes and androgenetic lines as their products differ
among themselves in the length of phonological phases, fruit type and fruit utilization.
Detailed study for characterization of morphological and production parameters of
the fruits was established that indicate to sort out lines with positive characteristics.

, have a variety of uses
such as providing nutrition and medical remedies. The mushroom
G. lucidum
has
been used for a long time to cure liver problems, heart condition, asthma, cancer,
high blood pressure and arthritis. Recently, it has been associated with boosting
immune systems in HIV infected persons. It is for these reasons that the mushroom
has attracted a lot of attention leading to proposals of cultivating to increase supply
to the Southern African market. This study was initiated with the objective of
determining the uses of
Ganoderma
species and other mushrooms by local
communities in Oshana and Ohangwena Regions of northern Namibia. A survey was
conducted in the 10% households of each of the two northern regions of Namibia.
A questionnaire for face

face interviews was designed and applied to the two
Regions. The information survey has revealed that
Ganoderma
species have a variety
of other traditional uses including veterinary applications, while other five species of
mushrooms are used as nerve calming tonics and as treatment of skin infections. The
study found out that those interviewed in Ohangwena Region use more mushrooms
for medicinal purposes than those interviewed in Oshana Region.
Biodiversity of Butterflies at Ambasamudram Taluk, Tirunelveli District, Tam...researchagriculture
The present study has been aimed to explore the existing diversity of
butterflies from Ambasamudram Taluk, Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu. A total of
19 genera and 23 species belonging to eight families were recorded. Out of these,
Nymphalidae were dominant with 7 species, followed by Papilionidae (5 species),
Pieridae (5 species), Danaidae (3 species), Acraeidae (1 species), Hesperiidae
(1 species), Lycaenidae (1 species), and Satyridae (1 species). Nymphalidae was found
to be the most dominant members with 30.43% followed by Papilionidae (21.74%),
Pieridae (17.39%) and Danaidae (13.04%). The minimum number of species found in
this habitat was from the families such as Acraeidae (4.35%), Hesperiidae (4.35%),
Lycaenidae (4.35%) and Satyridae (4.35%).

The importance of soybean as a high protein, primary input in vegetable oil,
diary and feed industries is not in doubt. The technical efficiency and
resource
-
productivity of smallholder soybean farmers in Benue State, Nigeria were
estimated using cross sectional data obtained on 96 soybean farmers in the empirical
analysis. Results obtained with transcendental logarithmic (translog) stochastic
frontier model showed that the technical efficiencies varied widely from
0.254 to 0.999 with a mean of 0.718. This indicates that smallholder soybean
production was in the irrational stage of production (stage III) as depicted by the
returns

to
-
scale (RTS) of
-
2.848. Land and fertilizer were effectively allocated and
used, as confirmed by each variable having estimated coefficient value between zero
and unity, depicting stage II in the production curve. The productivity of the factors
can be enhanced by expanding the farm size at the existing level of labour so that the
variable of labour used could move from stage III to stage II in the production curve.
Labour saving resource and/or practices should be encouraged for productivity and
technical efficiency to be enhanced.
Effect of seaweed liquid fertilizer (SLF) prepared from Sargassum wightii an...researchagriculture
The effect of Seaweed Liquid Fertilizer (SLF) of
Sargassum wightii
and
Hypnea
musciformis
were evaluated on the seedling growth and biochemical parameters of
the pulse,
Cyamopsis tetragonoloba
(L). The seeds of
C. tetragonoloba
soaked in SLF
performed better when compared to the water soaked controls in terms of growth
and certain biochemical attributes. The seeds were sown in soil and SLF were added
to soil bed in four different concentrations separately (0.5%, 1%, 2% and 5% w/v).

tetragonoloba
seedlings showed positive response at 0.5% concentration of aqueous
seaweed extracts in almost all the growth parameters studied. Similarly, a significant
increase in the content of photosynthetic pigments and biochemical constituents such
as soluble protein and starch was noted. The use of

proved to be effective.
Analysis of the effects of monetary and fiscal policy indicators on agricult...researchagriculture
The research was conducted to determine the effect of monetary and fiscal
policy indicators on Nigeria’s agricultural output. The output considered were mainly
cereals such as maize, sorghum, rice, millet and wheat while the monetary policy
indicators studied were inflation, money supply, interest rate and savings. Budgetary
allocation represents the fiscal component while inflation, savings, interest rate,
money supply represented monetary policy indicators. One of the fundamental
objectives was to examine the relationship between monetary and fiscal policy
indicators on agricultural output. Multiple regression was used as the main analytical
tool, and the result showed that money supply, budgetary allocation, interest rate
were 94%, 54% and 82% significant in the order above i.e. they had significant
relationship with output, while inflation and savings were not significant. The result
also revealed that within the period of study, agriculture contributed 28% to 35% of
the gross domestic product. Forestry and fisheries contributed the least, while crop
and animal sub sectors contributed the highest.

The simultaneous presence of the various elements as well induces an
increasing toxicity on the flora as on fauna and consequently on the local population.
Biodegradation of insecticidal compounds of Clausena anisata and Plectrant...researchagriculture
Essential oils of some aromatic plants are suggested in Northern Cameroon
as alternatives to hazardous pesticides having harmful effects on the consumer and
the environment. The active compounds of these essential oils are very volatile, easily
biodegradable. To be effective, treatments should be made with short interval and
regular time. This mode of use generates the accumulation of constituents of these
essential oils on the treated food and could limit food security and safety. The present
study aimed at evaluating the variation of the constituent’s quality of
Clausena
anisata
(Rutaceae)
and
Plectranthus glandulosus
(Lamiaceae)
essential oils and their
levels on food products according to time. In this way, samples of corn grains and
flour were treated with these essential oils and stored during 150 days. During this
storage, the persistent compounds present in these samples were extracted by
hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC/FID. The obtained
results showed that, essential
oils concentration decreases on food products according to the duration of storage,
with half
-
life times (IT50) of 24.16 and 34.61 days for
C. anisata
, and 25 and 38.75
days for
P. glandulosus
, respectively on grains and flour. At 150 days after the
treatment, there is no more that six constituents of
C. anaisata
and 3 of
P.
glandulosus
on the grains, and 10 and seven constituents on the flour respectively for
these two essential oils. The rates of these persistent constituents are more than 62.5
times lower than the toxic concentration observed from the day of treatment. At
these used doses, these constituents are not toxic to consumers.
Extension of grid soil sampling technology: application of extended Technolog...researchagriculture
Grid soil sampling technology is one of the most important information
technologies in agriculture. Application of these technologies is a way to understand
the extent of needed nutrient elements of soil. The purpose of this research is to
investigate the attitude and intention to the extension of grid soil sampling
technologies among agricultural specialists in Iran. A survey was used to collect data
from 249 specialists. The results using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) showed
that attitude to use is the most important determinant of intention to extension.
Attitude of confidence, observability and triability positively affect intention to
extension of these technologies. Perceived ease of use indirectly influences the
intention to extension through attitude to use.
Uptake and translocation of copper by mycorrhized seedlings Sterculia setige...researchagriculture
Pot culture experiments were established to determine the effects of
arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) (
Glomus fasciculatum
) on tropical gum tree
(
Sterculia setigera
Del.) grown in Copper contaminated soils. AMF and non
-
AMF
inoculated plants were grown in sterilized substrates and subjected to different
copper level (0, 200, 400,600, 800 mg kg
-
1
) concentrations. Root and shoot biomasses
of inoculated plants were significantly higher than those of non
-
inoculated. Copper
concentrations in roots were significantly higher than those in shoots in both the
inoculated and non
-
inoculated plants, indicating this heavy metal mostly accumulated
in the roots of plants. Copper translocation efficiency from root to shoot was lower in
mycorrhizal plants than in nonmycorrhizal ones at any Copper addition levels.
However, at high soil Copper concentrations, shoot Copper concentration of
inoculated plant were significantly reduced by about 50% compared to non
-
inoculated plants. These results indicated that AMF could promote tropical gum tree
growth and decrease the uptake of Cu at higher soil concentrations, thus protecting
their hosts from the toxicity of Copper contaminated soils.
Effect of elements of communication on effectiveness of poultry technology m...researchagriculture
This study was carried out to ascertain the effect of elements of
communications on effectiveness of poultry technology messages in Delta State,
Nigeria. A sample size of 180 poultry farmers and 46 extension agents were randomly
selected and used for the study. The findings showed that the poultry technology
messages communicated to farmers included climate change adaptation measures,
poultry waste management, bird flu prevention, prevention of predators and exotic
breeds of broiler and layer birds. All the elements of communication such as source
(sender), message, channel, and receiver had positive correlation with effectiveness
of poultry technology messages. There is a need to sustain the use of a combination
of channels, various elements in the communication process should be seriously
considered in message designs, its execution and extension agents. Poultry farmers
should be encouraged to improve on their role performance.
Seed morphometric studies of some Kenaf ( Hibiscus canabinus ) accessions researchagriculture
Fifteen kenaf lines collected from kenaf and Jute Improvement Programme
of Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (I.A.R.& T.) were subjected to digital
imaging analysis using USB microscope with digital imaging software (Veho™ UK) and
Vernier caliper to study the seed morphometric of available kenaf accession and the
possibility of using the morphometric data to determine variations between the
accessions. Ten seeds in four replicates of each seed lot were randomly selected and
measurement of the seed length, seed width, seed angle and seed thickness were
taken. The measurements were inputted and saved into Microsoft excel from where
the mean value of each parameters were calculated for each replicates. Data were
subjected to Analysis of variance, correlation analysis, principal component analysis
and clustering analysis. Variation exit among seed of kenaf accessions though they
had similar microscopic appearance features. Seed area, which was a function of seed
length and seed width contributed largely to the variation that exist between the seed

of this seed morphometrics trait in taxonomic description of kenaf is recommended to

Analysis of adaptation and extent of adaptation to climate variability among ...researchagriculture
The performance of agriculture is influenced by many factors including
climate variability. This factor is gradually being recognized as a key element in
shaping the form, scale, size and time
-
frame of agricultural productivity. Climate
variability is expected to have significant economic, environmental and social impacts
on various sectors of the Kenyan economy. In particular, rural farmers who depend on
major crops like maize and wheat for their livelihoods are likely to bear the brunt of
adverse impacts. The extent to which these impacts are felt depends in large part on
the extent of adaptation in response to climate variability. The key question here is,
“Why are wheat farmers in Rongai district facing continued decline in wheat output
despite evidence from both national and continental perspective that farmers have
adapted to climatic variability”. This study seeks to find out whether wheat farmers in
Rongai District have adapted to climate variability, and if that is the case, to what
extent. The study used multistage sampling procedure to select 150 wheat farmers in
Rongai district informed by both primary and secondary data sources. Data analysis
was done using descriptive statistics. The results indicated that indeed, farmers in the
area were able to recognize that temperatures have increased and there has been a
reduction in the volume of rainfall as well the vegetation cover. They were also able
to note changes in disease occurrence and pest infestation. The percentage of
farmers who perceived the changes was 62% while those who did not were 38%. The
percentage of farmers who perceived changes in temperature, precipitation and
vegetation cover were all equal. This indicates that the farmers were able to relate all
the three indicators of climate variability similarly.
Rice is one of the most important cereal crops of developing countries and
the staple food of about 65% of the world’s population. The rice crops have been
greatly disturbed by the heavy metals. The present study deals with the toxic effect of
sodium arsenate on morphological and molecular variation through SDS
-
PAGE in 10
rice (
Oryza sativa
L.) varieties. Ten varieties of rice were grown under different
concentration (25 ppm, 50 ppm and 100 ppm) of sodium arsenate against control.
Morphological parameters like shoot length, root length, leaf area and biomass
showed marked differences among ten rice varieties. The proteins were separated
through SDS

PAGE gel electrophoresis and calculated their molecular weight. The
morphological and molecular variations induced in rice varieties by arsenic stress
provide a new insight leading to a better understanding of the heavy metal response
in plants.
Postharvest status of plantains in some selected markets in Ghanaresearchagriculture
Plantain production and marketing has been done traditionally, as the problem of
food
production shortage during the last decade in Ghana has temporarily been solved
with
import substitute staple like rice.
A survey of marketing and utilisation of plantain in
twenty
-
two urban markets from five regions of Ghana revealed that fruit maturity has
important criteria to all players in the plantain postharvest system.
Unavailable, improper
infrastructure and facilities coupled with unreliable transportation system and poor road
network shorten the shelf
-
life thus causing rapid ripening with subsequent increase in
postharvest losses.
The practiced technology for enhancing ripening of fruits, though
low, was appropriate
and cost effective. The role of market queens in the retailing of
the product had a
negative effect on the rate of returns of the retailers, which
contributed to about 45% of
the traders being seasonal sellers. However with about 60%
of respondents had basic education and their level of record and book keeping was
impressive.
Postharvest systems of selected vegetables in the upper east and west regio...researchagriculture
Every Ghanaian household uses eggplant, okra, onion, pepper and tomato as well
as other leafy vegetables. Its widespread usage had led to wide cultivation using different
soil types. Pockets of spoilage predominate during favourable seasons. Postharvest losses
up to about 50% have been documented for some of these perishables. Interventions in
the postharvest subsector were in the past oriented
towards isolated technical solutions
with subsequent dissemination. In this
survey using a structured questionnaire, the
whole set of operations within the chain from production to consumption was studied
for the two upper regions of
Ghana. Production was basically during the dry season when
there was no major
farming active for the main staples. Tomato and onions had high
premium thus
were the main vegetables grown. Cultivation was done near dams,
waterbeds or
dugout for source of irrigation. The drudgery involved in cultivation
restricted
production to lower acreage and basically men.

Red rot disease is the major constraint for sugarcane production in India and the pathogen has gained virulence in recent years. About 33 % reduction in yield was observed and loss in sucrose and commercial cane sugar was estimated upto 32 to 50 % in average infections. The present investigation was carried out in sugarcane breeding institute, Coimbatore to study the effect of Psoralea corylifolia hairy root extract against high intensity Colletotrichum falcatum spore suspension (106 spores ml-1) causing red rot disease reaction in canes under Controlled Condition Treatment (CCT) Chamber. Nodal infection, green top, internodal discoloration and internal discoloration of the canes in CCT chamber were taken as the parameters for fixing the disease evaluation after 10 days of incubation. The results of CCT method authenticated the results obtained under laboratory conditions. The study revealed 100 per cent effectiveness of two per cent P. corylifolia hairy root extract over red rot pathogen infection when compared to canes treated only with spore suspension of C. falcatum.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MARTIAN ATMOSPHERE SAMPLE RETURN.Sérgio Sacani
The return of a sample of near-surface atmosphere from Mars would facilitate answers to several first-order science questions surrounding the formation and evolution of the planet. One of the important aspects of terrestrial planet formation in general is the role that primary atmospheres played in influencing the chemistry and structure of the planets and their antecedents. Studies of the martian atmosphere can be used to investigate the role of a primary atmosphere in its history. Atmosphere samples would also inform our understanding of the near-surface chemistry of the planet, and ultimately the prospects for life. High-precision isotopic analyses of constituent gases are needed to address these questions, requiring that the analyses are made on returned samples rather than in situ.

Observation of Io’s Resurfacing via Plume Deposition Using Ground-based Adapt...Sérgio Sacani
Since volcanic activity was first discovered on Io from Voyager images in 1979, changes
on Io’s surface have been monitored from both spacecraft and ground-based telescopes.
Here, we present the highest spatial resolution images of Io ever obtained from a groundbased telescope. These images, acquired by the SHARK-VIS instrument on the Large
Binocular Telescope, show evidence of a major resurfacing event on Io’s trailing hemisphere. When compared to the most recent spacecraft images, the SHARK-VIS images
show that a plume deposit from a powerful eruption at Pillan Patera has covered part
of the long-lived Pele plume deposit. Although this type of resurfacing event may be common on Io, few have been detected due to the rarity of spacecraft visits and the previously low spatial resolution available from Earth-based telescopes. The SHARK-VIS instrument ushers in a new era of high resolution imaging of Io’s surface using adaptive
optics at visible wavelengths.

I will discuss some other recent disproofs of Bell's theorem using the language of causality based on causal graphs. Causal thinking is also central to law and justice. I will mention surprising connections to my work on serial killer nurse cases, in particular the Dutch case of Lucia de Berk and the current UK case of Lucy Letby.
Deep Behavioral Phenotyping in Systems Neuroscience for Functional Atlasing a...Ana Luísa Pinho
Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) provides means to characterize brain activations in response to behavior. However, cognitive neuroscience has been limited to group-level effects referring to the performance of specific tasks. To obtain the functional profile of elementary cognitive mechanisms, the combination of brain responses to many tasks is required. Yet, to date, both structural atlases and parcellation-based activations do not fully account for cognitive function and still present several limitations. Further, they do not adapt overall to individual characteristics. In this talk, I will give an account of deep-behavioral phenotyping strategies, namely data-driven methods in large task-fMRI datasets, to optimize functional brain-data collection and improve inference of effects-of-interest related to mental processes. Key to this approach is the employment of fast multi-functional paradigms rich on features that can be well parametrized and, consequently, facilitate the creation of psycho-physiological constructs to be modelled with imaging data. Particular emphasis will be given to music stimuli when studying high-order cognitive mechanisms, due to their ecological nature and quality to enable complex behavior compounded by discrete entities. I will also discuss how deep-behavioral phenotyping and individualized models applied to neuroimaging data can better account for the subject-specific organization of domain-general cognitive systems in the human brain. Finally, the accumulation of functional brain signatures brings the possibility to clarify relationships among tasks and create a univocal link between brain systems and mental functions through: (1) the development of ontologies proposing an organization of cognitive processes; and (2) brain-network taxonomies describing functional specialization. To this end, tools to improve commensurability in cognitive science are necessary, such as public repositories, ontology-based platforms and automated meta-analysis tools. I will thus discuss some brain-atlasing resources currently under development, and their applicability in cognitive as well as clinical neuroscience.

Multi-source connectivity as the driver of solar wind variability in the heli...Sérgio Sacani
The ambient solar wind that flls the heliosphere originates from multiple
sources in the solar corona and is highly structured. It is often described
as high-speed, relatively homogeneous, plasma streams from coronal
holes and slow-speed, highly variable, streams whose source regions are
under debate. A key goal of ESA/NASA’s Solar Orbiter mission is to identify
solar wind sources and understand what drives the complexity seen in the
heliosphere. By combining magnetic feld modelling and spectroscopic
techniques with high-resolution observations and measurements, we show
that the solar wind variability detected in situ by Solar Orbiter in March
2022 is driven by spatio-temporal changes in the magnetic connectivity to
multiple sources in the solar atmosphere. The magnetic feld footpoints
connected to the spacecraft moved from the boundaries of a coronal hole
to one active region (12961) and then across to another region (12957). This
is refected in the in situ measurements, which show the transition from fast
to highly Alfvénic then to slow solar wind that is disrupted by the arrival of
a coronal mass ejection. Our results describe solar wind variability at 0.5 au
but are applicable to near-Earth observatories.

Normal Cell Metabolism:
Cellular respiration describes the series of steps that cells use to break down sugar and other chemicals to get the energy we need to function.
Energy is stored in the bonds of glucose and when glucose is broken down, much of that energy is released.
Cell utilize energy in the form of ATP.
The first step of respiration is called glycolysis. In a series of steps, glycolysis breaks glucose into two smaller molecules - a chemical called pyruvate. A small amount of ATP is formed during this process.
Most healthy cells continue the breakdown in a second process, called the Kreb's cycle. The Kreb's cycle allows cells to “burn” the pyruvates made in glycolysis to get more ATP.
The last step in the breakdown of glucose is called oxidative phosphorylation (Ox-Phos).
It takes place in specialized cell structures called mitochondria. This process produces a large amount of ATP. Importantly, cells need oxygen to complete oxidative phosphorylation.
If a cell completes only glycolysis, only 2 molecules of ATP are made per glucose. However, if the cell completes the entire respiration process (glycolysis - Kreb's - oxidative phosphorylation), about 36 molecules of ATP are created, giving it much more energy to use.
IN CANCER CELL:

ABSTRACT:
Basidiomycetes fungi, including Ganoderma lucidum, have a variety of uses
such as providing nutrition and medical remedies. The mushroom G. lucidum has
been used for a long time to cure liver problems, heart condition, asthma, cancer,
high blood pressure and arthritis. Recently, it has been associated with boosting
immune systems in HIV infected persons. It is for these reasons that the mushroom
has attracted a lot of attention leading to proposals of cultivating to increase supply
to the Southern African market. This study was initiated with the objective of
determining the uses of Ganoderma species and other mushrooms by local
communities in Oshana and Ohangwena Regions of northern Namibia. A survey was
conducted in the 10% households of each of the two northern regions of Namibia.
A questionnaire for face-to-face interviews was designed and applied to the two
Regions. The information survey has revealed that Ganoderma species have a variety
of other traditional uses including veterinary applications, while other five species of
mushrooms are used as nerve calming tonics and as treatment of skin infections. The
study found out that those interviewed in Ohangwena Region use more mushrooms
for medicinal purposes than those interviewed in Oshana Region.

2. INTRODUCTION
Mushrooms have long been valued as tasty,
nutritious food by different societies throughout the
world. In the developing world, including Africa,
mushrooms are used as food and medicine in many
societies. Mushrooms offer tremendous applications as
they can be used as food and medicines besides their key
ecological roles. They represent as one of the world’s
greatest untapped resources of nutrition and palatable
food of the future. Mushrooms as functional foods are
used as nutrient supplements to enhance immunity in the
form of tablets, (Wani et al., 2010). In addition, some
mushrooms promote good health and vitality and have
been tried with some success in the therapy of
cancer, viral diseases, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia,
impaired blood platelet aggregation and hypertension,
(Ambali et al., 2008). In Africa, however, the medicinal
and nutritional importance of mushrooms has not been
adequately studied and documented, (Munyanziza and
Oldeman, 1996). In the developed world, mushrooms
now occupy a central position in natural products
research such as medicine and food. For instance, there is
now an increasing evidence that mushrooms have a wide
range of medicinally important compounds that have
anticancer and antiviral activity; offering great hope for
the development of new drugs for ailments like
HIV/AIDS, Avian influenza and the many cancers that
afflict humanity today (Chang and Miles, 2004).
Indigenous peoples around the world have
sought knowledge of physical reality throughout the
ages. Their understanding of the physical universe is
codified in their indigenous knowledge systems. A major
component of these systems is ethnobotanical
knowledge, which refers to a cumulative body of
traditional knowledge about the interaction between
human societies and the plant kingdom, and, more
specifically, how indigenous people perceive, manage,
and utilize the plants around them (Suminguit, 2005).
Ethnobotanical knowledge can serve as an effective
development tool to improve the living conditions of
indigenous communities without degrading the
environment. It can be used to increase and enhance
livelihood options, revitalize agriculture, increase food
security, improve health and promote a sense of cultural
pride within the community.
In Namibia, the utilization of wild mushrooms as
food is very common, wild edible fungi provide two
main benefits to the people, as a source of food and
income. It is very common to see people, particularly
young women selling mushrooms by the roadside
just after the start of the rainy season.
Termitomyces schimperi, Terfezia pfeilii (Kalahari
Desert truffles) are some of the most hunted wild
mushrooms in rural areas of Namibia (Mshigeni and
Chang, 2000). The awareness on wild edible mushrooms
and their importance to people is generally poor and
many of the collections done are for personal use
(Mshigeni and Chang, 2000).
Ganoderma (Basidiomycota: Ganodermatales) is
a genus of wood-inhabiting fungus on monocots, dicots,
and gymnosperms. Some species are saprophytic, but
several are pathogens that cause decay in roots, butts,
and trunks of living trees. Ganoderma species contain
protein-bound polysaccharides known to have medicinal
properties (Dupler, 2001). In the last 20 years,

3. Ganoderma has been tested in human clinical studies and
is thought to be beneficial for a wide variety of disorders,
including neurasthenia, insomnia, rhinitis, and duodenal
ulcers (Ying, 1987).
MATERIALS AND METHODS
All the two regions are situated in the northern
part of Namibia. They share the borders, but the
vegetation types, soil types and the annual rainfall differ
(Mendelsohn et al., 2000). Ohangwena region has an
area of about 10,582 km2
and a population of 227,728;
while Oshana region is about 5,290 km2
and a population
of 161,977 (Central Bureau of Statistic and National
Planning Commission of Namibia, 2003). The people
living in Oshana and Ohangwena region speak the same
dialect which is Oshiwambo.
A questionnaire was used to get information on
indigenous knowledge on the uses of Ganoderma
mushrooms. This questionnaire was administered
face-to-face to community members from 10% of
households in the selected villages. This means, if there
are 100 households in the village, only 10 of these
households were interviewed. The face-to face method
was used because of illiteracy and communication gap
within the targeted communities, the questions needed to
be explained clearly to the respondents. In each
interview, direct questions were used and, on several
occasions, fresh or dry Ganoderma mushrooms were
shown as stimuli. At the household level only elders
were asked, this is done to make sure that the
information collected will be trustworthy. The interviews
were done in Oshiwambo, the language which is spoken
in both Ohangwena and Oshana regions. The
questionnaire was meant to get information on the uses
of Ganoderma species only, but any other information on
the use of other mushrooms was also recorded.
RESULTS
The above figure shows that male respondents
were more than females and this demonstrates that men
know more about the medicinal use of mushrooms than
their female counterparts.
According to the people interviewed in this
study, more than six mushroom species are used for
medicinal purposes in Oshana and Ohangwena regions as
shown in the figure above. Ganoderma is at the third
position and the Amanita species which are poisonous
mushrooms, used on arrows when hunting.
In total, 51 questionnaires were completed during
the study, 26 in Oshana and 25 in Ohangwena. The
interviews were done in the villages whose field’s
samples for Ganoderma species were collected. In both
the regions, interviews were also done in some villages
which were not sampled but accessible. All the people

4. interviewed in both the regions know mushrooms
especially the most edibles ones, but knew less about the
medicinal value of the mushrooms.
In Oshana, only the people who relocated from
Ohangwena to Oshana knew the medicinal value of
mushrooms, including the Ganoderma species, while in
Ohangwena most people interviewed during the study
knew the medicinal value of more than one mushroom.
Among all the people interviewed in Oshana, only 34%
use mushrooms for medicinal purposes compared to 62%
in Ohangwena region. In most of the households, only
men were willing to respond, as a result most of the
answers were given by men. The questionnaire also
revealed some of the mushrooms which were not known
or considered to be of medicinal value by the researcher
as shown on figure 3.
DISCUSSION
Indigenous knowledge of medicinal mushroom
use is linked to local culture and history. It should
therefore be regarded as a body of knowledge that has
continually developed without the outside interference of
formal science (Opige et al., 2006).
The main component of this study was to
determine the use of Ganoderma species as a medicinal
mushroom in Ohangwena and Oshana regions of
Northern Namibia. No studies have been conducted to
measure the cultural significance of fungi in Namibia.
For this reason this study was carried out to learn more
on the traditional mushroom knowledge of the people
living in Ohangwena and Oshana regions. Mushroom
knowledge in both the regions was extensive.
This study was designed to document the
traditional knowledge on the use of Ganoderma
mushrooms but it also generated more information on the
uses of other mushroom species. The study obtained
detailed information about several aspects of traditional
mushroom knowledge as can be seen on table-1.
According to the information obtained from the
questionnaire, it can be said that Ganoderma mushrooms
have been playing a role in the daily lives of the local
communities for a very long time, because it is reported

5. to have been used in relieving stress when sniffed as ash
mixed with tobacco, calming of nerves when put in
water, used as a drink and healing of cold and flu
symptoms when its smoke is inhaled and applied to
infected skin to treat the wounds on children’s heads.
The latter has also been confirmed in another study
in Cameroon where they mix the crushed
Ganoderma lucidum with oil to be used as ointment to
treat skin infections (Yongabi et al., 2004).
This mushroom is also said to have history in
treating animal diseases, especially cattle when suffering
from lung diseases and goats when having skin rush. It is
said that the cattle herders crush the fruiting bodies of
these mushrooms, add water and mix well before giving
the animals to drink. The animals are said to stop
coughing after taking the mixture for some days of which
the caretaker could not specify as to how many.
Unfortunately, no previous studies were done to confirm
this information.
Opige et al., 2006 reported that most of the
mushrooms for medicinal use in Uganda are identified
localy with their association to particular tree species
were they grow from, this was not the case in this study
here in Namibia, the local people here refere to them
according to how they look like “omapakululu”
something looking like the elephant ear. They also
reported that it is normally found growing on either the
roots or tree stumps which is the same case in the two
regions. They stated that the patients are treated by
inhaling the smoke or steam in a boiled mixture of water
and the mushrooms are used to treat measeles and body
pain, our finding was the same in Ohangwena region
where people inhale smoke for the relief of flu and body
aches.
Traditional knowledge from Oshana and
Ohangwena regions show that until today, in different
places of the country, the indigenous people in these
regions use other mushrooms also both for food and for
medicinal purposes. It is not known how important
mushrooms use as medicine is, as it appears to be
important and known by the people included in this study
from Ohangwena region, and not known how important
to those included in this study from Oshana region
(figure 3).
Although Ganoderma mushrooms did not make
it to the top of the six listed mushrooms used for
medicinal purposes in the two regions as expected
(figure 4), this study confirmed that it is used for
medicinal purposes in Namibia as reported by previous
authors in other countries (Munyanziza and Oldeman
1996, Mshigeni and Chang, 2000; Stamets and Wu Yao,
1999). These findings prove that there is a need for more
research to be done on all indigenous mushrooms in
order to document all essential information about
mushrooms found in Namibia, something not done to
date.
CONCLUSION
The documentation of medicinal mushrooms and
the social as well as cultural practices associated with
their use as medicine practice is a necessity. It is from
such fundamental information where applied research
can be carried out to develop the cultivation and improve
on the use of both the medicinal and edible mushrooms
in Namibia. This study revealed that Ganoderma species
are used for medicinal purposes in Oshana and
Ohangwena regions. These mushrooms are not only used

6. in treating human ailments, but also used in treating
animals, for example in cattle, goats and chickens. To
unleash the potential of their ethnobotanical knowledge
as a tool for development with some sense of ownership
and self-identity, there is a need to enhance the
communities’ skills educating them about mushrooms to
create employment opportunities in their communities.
They need both short-term and long-term skills
enhancement.
