Uses and Gratifications Theory

        Jessica Goldsmith
This theory suggests that the public play and active role in
controlling the media. This is because they public look for media that
supplies their needs instead of the media providing it for them.
Therefore, the public control the media as the media are supplying
for their demands instead of the public going along with the media.

4 Basic Needs:

• Diversion – this is the need to escape their everyday lives and use
the media to relax and calm down.
• Personal Relationships – they use the media to fulfil their needs
and to form a relationship/to be a part of a social group.
• Personal Identity – we use the media to fin ourselves and the way
media presents our genre helps us to discover who we are.
• Surveillance - we use the media to find out what is going on
around us/in the world (e.g. Celebrity Gossip).
