Working at a Technology conglomerate for over 9 years
has provided me valuable lessons not just in how to code
and make things works efficiently, it has also made me
understand the design of everyday products better.
The value add an efficient design can provide goes to
great lengths in more acceptability of your product. Users
not only want to see things work, they want to appreciate
the product, love their purchase and can go to any length
in explaining to the world - WHY they love it!!! (think
Apple!)
Provided a target segment, this is how you can make your
App-design simple and efficient by following these few steps:
• Design for big fingers - Not everybody uses a stylus (actually
very few do) and ordinary people will just feel a little more
comfortable if they don't have to press their fingers again
and again to make things work.
• Less action means faster output - Making users go through
a number of steps to achieve an output might put your app
at risk! With reducing attention spans and increasing
notifications, more than 2-to-4 actions will lead user to
some think more, which will reduce the intuitiveness and
charm for your app.
• Interruption is a given - Ultimately it's a smartphone. A
user gets calls, texts, and other notifications every few
seconds. The user will return to your app again and
again, so reduce the loading time of your app, save the
states the user got stuck on last visit and reduce
approximation.
• Don't Clutter - It's a smartphone not a tablet. The users
need only few things/actions 90% of the time, the rest
needs to be contextual. Don't expect the user to know
everything about the app in first few visits.
Given the right information and actions, users
will fall in love with your app and will love to
discover more on every subsequent visit.
