branch
STATE GOVERNMENT
 Each state has its own constitution, similar to the national
Constitution
 Laws cannot conflict with national laws
 Also has three branches:
o Legislative
o Judicial
o Executive
 Instead of a president, each state elects a governor
POLITICAL PROCESS
 Two-Party System:

ELECTORAL COLLEGE
 “Popular vote" -- used to choose the president and vice
president "indirectly" through the Electoral College
 Instruct the electors from states to cast their votes for the
same candidate
 Each state gets a number of electors equal to the state's
number of representatives in the House and Senate
 Candidate winning most popular votes wins all electoral votes
for that state
 538 electoral votes total, win presidency with 270 electoral

Editor's Notes

  1. After the American colonies won their independence from England on July 1776, the thirteen colonies became thirteen sovereign states. They feared a strong central government like the one they lived with under England's rule. Formed a league of friendship so they could work together: Articles of Confederation.
  2. While the Constitution sets up the system of government, the actual way in which the offices of Congress and the Presidency are filled are based upon the American political system.
