- #6 Photo of my favourite oz place what's yours? Great view, gritty place (functioning rear lane with rubbish bins and cobblestones). Doesn't meet classic urban design criteria - no active edges, although the graffiti helps as does Movida restaurant.
- #8 The Nolli plan (in this instance Rome) is a useful urban design tool. It shows buildings in black and the spaces in between in white. Generally the more complex the pattern the more interesting the place. Think of the pattern of your nearest big box shopping centre - box in black surrounded by hectares of white parking! What would the Nolli plan be of your favourite place?

- #15 During the design stage we need to plan (and budget) for the social fabric which will play a large part in place creation.
- #16 This drawing (produced in a design workshop) should deliver good permeability and connectivity. The density is high around the new train station, with a good street network and mix of uses. Walkability – safe and comfortable routes, not too far too walk and something to do when you get there!
- #18 Diversity is a key driver for successful places – part of the reason we enjoy being in the inner city. This resident of affordable housing at the end of Hartop Lane in KGUV maintains the street plants. She is coordinating the construction of a community vege garden in the adjacent park. Because this Brisbane Housing Company site is on the main street it delivers retail and commercial at the front... with an awning!
- #19 The first quality and possibly the hardest to reproduce? A unique Australian Street - the front walk on Rottnest Island. Largely unchanged over the last 150 years of continuous use. Building from local material make a significant contribution to character. Can you spot the quokka?

- #24 This quality replaces robustness in the manual because it refers to fit – including the concept of ‘loose fit’ Where new developments aspire to street level retail uses they provide higher floor to ceiling heights for ground floor apartments in the short term.
- #25 James St is one of the original streets in inner NE Brisbane. When CocaCola retreated to the outer suburbs, the land on either side of the street was redeveloped with retail and commercial uses. Shops, bars and cafes interact with the footpaths and a boutique cinema is a magnet. This is the Cru Bar which (apparently) stays open like this late into the night. Across the street is a small (approx. 30m²) park with a water feature. A small gesture for the kids while mum and dad are having lunch. You can drive here and get a park – but the focus is on pedestrian pleasure. Coincidently, there is public housing around the corner. PS – no one stopped me taking this photo!
- #27 Good urban design introduces, maintains and intensifies human activity within the public realm. An example of an active building: retail use transparent facade interaction with the street a little whimsical?
- #28 We talked about sense of place in the introduction. No doubt Birdsville delivers good built form outcomes. However, people probably travel long distances for the event and the associated festival (and the thrill of getting there!).
- #30 The new residential development at Mawson Lakes is impressive given it’s distance from the city. These footpaths are well overlooked by the buildings. Some people like gritty and grungy places which some of us may describe as being unsafe?
- #31 Urban design is an activity and an end result. The linear park in KGUV looked good on plan, but may be missing a clear function. Could be a really good playground or skate park, or performance space?
