Why to upgrade to SQLServer 2012?
- 1. Why Upgrade?
- 2. There is no single feature which takes care of both HA & DR. We need to Configure DR for all Databases individually. Automatic Failover ◦ Not possible in Log Shipping. ◦ Only possible if we have a separate Witness Server in DB Mirroring. (additional Hw) RelatedDependent Databases can’t Failover together by Default (LSDBM both) Application Failover ◦ Not so easy in Log Shipping ◦ In Mirroring we have to add additional Parameter in Connection String (PartnerFailover) No use of MirrorStandby Server (Non-Utilized Resources Hardware) ◦ Can’t Use it for Reporting ◦ Can’t even Offload the Backups.
- 3. Only one Standby DB is possible in DB Mirroring. Either we go for Synchronous or Asynchronous. A common issue of Orphaned Users ◦ Restoring DBRefreshing lower environments. ◦ DB Failover – in Log ShippingDB Mirroring. Have to implement extra steps to Sync logins. Memory Architecture is not much refined – MultiPage allocation is out of the max Cap. TempDB should be on Storage & not on Local Disk – Wasting too much Storage whereas we could use Local Disk. (clusters)
- 4. Configure multiple DBs at once. Single Solution for both HA & DR. Automatic Failover Possible without additional Hardware. Can clubBind the related DBs so they failover together. Application Failover is almost Transparent – no change in Connection String. – once Listner is created & the same name is utilized. InBuilt Load Balancing so actual ActiveActive Implementation. Now we can utilize Standby DB Copies for Reporting. We can also Offload our Backups on Standby DB Servers. (So no need to think before initiating Backups – can be kicked off Anytime.) We may choose to run Integrity checks also on Standby Server(Resource Intensive Task)
- 5. We can now Place the TempDB on local Storage (clusters) We can have upto Four Replica’s of a single DB. Upto 2 can be configured for Automatic Failover and Upto 3 for Synchronous Communication. Mix topology of AsyncSync is possible. We can now Avoid Orphan users by choosing Contained DBs. We can now use Server Core Installation – by using this we can decrease the patching time and downtime by 50%. User-defined server roles are now available – Much Granular Control over Server Security. Multi-subnet failover clusters are possible now. Memory Architecture is much refined.
- 6. Builtin support for Encryption Builtin support for Compression Creates Auto Stats for Secondary – no need to maintain these manually.
- 7. SQL Server 2012 solves many issues and provides inbuilt capabilities to overcome potential problems. If we see the tradeoff – upgrading is going to help us a lot & will be a wise decision.
