BCAT identified a need for an alternative to traditional 12-step programs and started the first SMART Recovery meeting in Ireland in 2013. There are now 5 meetings in Bray. A 3-year development plan was agreed in 2014 to establish SMART meetings across Ireland with funding secured. By the end of 2016, it is hoped that 25 new SMART meetings will be established as part of a pilot program to train addiction services and establish peer-led meetings across Dublin, Cork, Waterford, and other regions. The future goal is to have SMART established as a self-sustaining organization by 2018 with 100 new meetings and a strategic plan for further growth.
