Interim recommendations for UK universities - students
Students
1. Consider recurring pulse surveys of
attitudes and expectations.
2. Conduct a skills audit of students and build
appropriate digital skills training into
curricula.
3. Adopt accessible and inclusive approaches
to technology-enabled learning from the
outset of learning design.
4. Physical and mental wellbeing issues and
should be carefully considered throughout
university projects.
“Sadly, the narrative about the digital
fluency of students is frankly, a load of
nonsense. It's just not true. It's all very
well to use your thumbs very quickly to
type a message or to use three apps to
death. That does not translate into a
focused, effective approach to learning
using digital tools.”
Alejandro Armellini, dean of learning
and teaching, University of
Northampton
Interim recommendations for UK universities - staff
Staff
1. Invest in building staff digital skills and reward
and recognition frameworks as part of
professional development
2. Respond to changing needs of staff
3. Consider the role of students in shaping the
learning experience, specifically students as co-
creators
4. Adopt Jisc’s five principles for technology
enhanced assessment.
"It's really important at this
time that we spend time
supporting our colleagues and
give them permission to fail.
Allow people to take chances
and experiment."
Lucy Meredith, vice principal,
PVC learning, teaching and
students, University of West
of Scotland
Emerging view: seven challenges for UK higher education
1. How to heighten the appeal of online learning for students?
2. How to ensure we are supporting the conditions for learning?
3. How to strengthen the digital skills and confidence of students
and staff?
4. How to increase high quality learning and teaching at scale?
5. How to embrace blended learning as part of curriculum re-
design?
6. How to bring digital into the heart of university culture?
7. How to invest wisely?
