Universal design is an approach to designing products and environments to be usable by all people without needing adaptation or specialized design. It values diversity and inclusion. The universal design process involves identifying the application, defining the intended users and their diverse characteristics, involving consumers, adopting and integrating design guidelines, applying the guidelines, planning for accommodations, training and support, and evaluating the application. Universal design principles include equitable use for all people, flexibility in use, simple and intuitive use, perceptible information, tolerance for error, low physical effort, and appropriate size and space for approach and use. Examples of universal design applications include school curriculum, career service offices, tutoring centers, museums, and computer labs.
