What is Universal Design?
Universal design is the one
design that is implemented
to make sure that all
students become expert
learners whether they are
gifted or if they learn
slower. Universal design’s
main goal is that all
students in a single
classroom are able to
discuss the given material
at the same level.

3 Principles for Universal
Design
The three questions that need addressed are: How
does the learner gain the information? How does
the learner express on the information? And, how
are they engaged with the information?
The three principles that answer these questions
are: 1. Provide multiple means of representation so
the learners can make sense of the information. 2.
Provide multiple means of expression. 3. Provide
multiple means of engagement so the learners have
options.

How Can I Implement This Into My
Classroom?
The first thing that teachers
need to do is to get to know
their students and recognize
the different ways they learn.
Then, when planning
lessons, look for the barriers
that may prevent all of the
students from learning.
Find out how you can get the
students over these barriers.

Is This Really Possible?
Yes, yes it is.
If you plan on making your students know about magnetic pulls, why not
give them OPTIONS on how to learn? Allow them hands on experiments
as well as literature for the students who like to read? Teaching in your
students proximal development will allow them to better learn the given
material.

Will This Be Easy To Do In My
Classroom?
Universal design is a scary
thought right off the bat.
But, why not start out by
making a website with your
class expectations that is
accessible to everyone? Even
the student who needs text-to-
speech software? Even the
littlest start can lead to a road
to complete universal design.
