3. OBJECTIVES
• Describe the meaning , philosophy, elements, principles of
administration and its significance.
4. INTRODUCTION
• Management is a systematic way of managing people and things within the
organization. Administration is defined as an act of administering the whole
organization by a group of people
• Management is an activity of business and functional level, whereas
Administration is a high-level activity.
• Management is all about plans and actions, but the administration is
concerned with framing policies and setting objectives.
5. ADMINISTRATION
• “Administer” derived from the Latin word ―ad + ministraire, - to care
for or to look after people to manage affairs.
• Administration is the activities of groups co-operating to accomplish

• Administration may be defined as the management of affairs with the
use of well thought out principles and practices and rationalized
techniques to achieve certain objectives. - Goel
6. MANAGEMENT
• Management may be defined as the art of securing maximum results
with a minimum of effort so as to secure maximum prosperity and
happiness for both employer and employee and give the public the best
possible service. - John Mee
• Management is distinct process consisting of planning, organizing,
actuating, activating and controlling, performed to determine and
accomplish the objectives by the use of people and resources. - George
11. PLANNING: This essentially refers to establishing a broad sketch of the work
to be completed and the procedures incorporated to implement them.
Planning is the first and most important step in POSDCORB as it sets the
overall structure of the process with activities and timelines.
12. • ORGANIZING: Organizing involves formally classifying, defining and
synchronizing the various sub-processes or subdivisions of the work to
be done. It makes sure that the activities and timelines in the first step
of planning are refined and organized further so that right people can
be staffed to execute these tasks.
13. STAFFING: This involves recruiting and selecting the right candidates for the
job and facilitating their orientation and training while maintaining a
favorable work environment.
14. DIRECTING: This entails decision making and delegating structured
instructions and orders to execute them. Directing is an important step in
the POSDCORB cycle as it makes thing happen by giving clear objectives
to teams and individuals
COORDINATING: This basically refers to orchestrating and interlinking
the various components of the work.
15. REPORTING: Reporting involves regularly updating the superior about
the progress or the work related activities. The information
dissemination can be through records or inspection.
BUDGETTING: Budgeting involves all the activities that under Auditing,
Accounting, Fiscal Planning and Control.

HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION
Planning for total patient care.
Essential for supervision.
Selection of personnel and assignment of their activities.
To provide health care efficiently and effectively.
Interpersonal relationship with other department.
To evaluate the quality of nursing care.
