Unit 4: Media Audiences and Products
For this unit you must:
GC1 – Know how a media industry identifies audiences for its products
GC2 – Understand how media products are constructed for specific audiences
GC3 – Understand how audiences can respond to media products
Unit 4 GC 1: Know how a Media Industry Identifies Audiences for its Products
Task 1
Use the table to answer the two questions below
There are several ways we might classify audiences such as in gender, age,
ethnicities, sexual orientations etc.
The Standard Occupations Classification is listed below
A - In media , why might we group or classify audiences in this manner?
So if you have a new product you know who to target it towards.

B - How is audience research used in relation to new media products? (e.g.
rating, BARB, focus groups, questionnaires) they are useful because you
know if the film/game was any good and what would make it better.
Task 2
A - Using the classifications table and the BARB website, what can you tell us about your
chosen industry and your product from Unit 21? (who would like your target audience be?)
Carp-Talk
A weekly published magazine packed with news, reviews and features from top anglers
Carp-Talk has a circulation of 26,000.
Carp-Talk is published by Carp Fishing News Ltd.
The target audience would be for fans of fishing our mag can attacked a large range of people.
Using barb grade
A- Lawyers fishing
To grade
E- unemployed rivers and lakes
Ppc (press complaints commission) handles complaints about the editorial content of
newspapers and magazines (and their websites). My mag would fall into the sport category.
Magazines can be distributed through the mail; through sales by newsstands, bookstores, or
other vendors and they fall into 3 category’s
 Paid circulation – mag sold for a price
 Non paid circulation – no cover price given free
 Controlled circulation – industry based publications to perscific readers.

B – What constraints, codes of practice, and or regulations does your chosen
industry/must your product follow?
The PCC is an independent self-regulatory body which deals with complaints about
the editorial content of newspapers and magazines (and their websites). We keep
industry standards high by training journalists and editors, and work pro-actively
behind the scenes to prevent harassment and media intrusion. We can provide
pre-publication advice to journalists and the public and have published advice on
dealing with media attention after a death.

Unit 4 GC 2: Understand how media products are constructed for specific
audiences
Task 1

Create an avatar of an ‘average audience member’ that your Unit 21 product is
aimed at. Consider age, gender, clothing style, musical tastes, etc.
My guy has a hat because hes out in the cold
He is very tied hes been up al night catching carp
You can tell he likes fishing because he says it hes holding a rod and his top and the
hat and trousers are green for camouflage.

Task 2
Look at your final product and list the ways you have aimed your product at
your target audience. Consider content, genre, language used, narrative,
visual images, graphics, fonts, colours etc. the target audience is people who
fish and it shows this because the pictures are of a lake were you can fish.
they will relate to my mag the text only fishermen will
know what its talking about. The pictures are of fish
and they will relate to it because the size of the fish
and the look of the fish when we were taking the
photos I thought they were the same as what you
would see in a mag.

Task 2
Write a report presenting your results of your survey. Consider the following:
 How have different ages, genders etc responded to your product?
 Were you surprised with the results?
 Do your results show that your product has reached your desired target
audience?
There wasn’t much difference apart from 1 or 2 boys fished and no girls. No I
was surprised with the results because that was what I thought was going to
happen because not everyone likes fishing. It was close but I know it could
have been better the spelling was not good I should have spent more time on
the magazine and then it would have been a lot better and more writing and
information.

  • 1. 1 Unit 4: Media Audiences and Products For this unit you must: GC1 – Know how a media industry identifies audiences for its products GC2 – Understand how media products are constructed for specific audiences GC3 – Understand how audiences can respond to media products Unit 4 GC 1: Know how a Media Industry Identifies Audiences for its Products Task 1 Use the table to answer the two questions below There are several ways we might classify audiences such as in gender, age, ethnicities, sexual orientations etc. The Standard Occupations Classification is listed below A - In media , why might we group or classify audiences in this manner? So if you have a new product you know who to target it towards.
  • 2. 2 B - How is audience research used in relation to new media products? (e.g. rating, BARB, focus groups, questionnaires) they are useful because you know if the film/game was any good and what would make it better. Task 2 A - Using the classifications table and the BARB website, what can you tell us about your chosen industry and your product from Unit 21? (who would like your target audience be?) Carp-Talk A weekly published magazine packed with news, reviews and features from top anglers Carp-Talk has a circulation of 26,000. Carp-Talk is published by Carp Fishing News Ltd. The target audience would be for fans of fishing our mag can attacked a large range of people. Using barb grade A- Lawyers fishing To grade E- unemployed rivers and lakes Ppc (press complaints commission) handles complaints about the editorial content of newspapers and magazines (and their websites). My mag would fall into the sport category. Magazines can be distributed through the mail; through sales by newsstands, bookstores, or other vendors and they fall into 3 category’s  Paid circulation – mag sold for a price  Non paid circulation – no cover price given free  Controlled circulation – industry based publications to perscific readers.
  • 3. 3 B – What constraints, codes of practice, and or regulations does your chosen industry/must your product follow? The PCC is an independent self-regulatory body which deals with complaints about the editorial content of newspapers and magazines (and their websites). We keep industry standards high by training journalists and editors, and work pro-actively behind the scenes to prevent harassment and media intrusion. We can provide pre-publication advice to journalists and the public and have published advice on dealing with media attention after a death.   • 4. 4 Create an avatar of an ‘average audience member’ that your Unit 21 product is aimed at. Consider age, gender, clothing style, musical tastes, etc. My guy has a hat because hes out in the cold He is very tied hes been up al night catching carp You can tell he likes fishing because he says it hes holding a rod and his top and the hat and trousers are green for camouflage.
  • 5. 5 Task 2 Look at your final product and list the ways you have aimed your product at your target audience. Consider content, genre, language used, narrative, visual images, graphics, fonts, colours etc. the target audience is people who fish and it shows this because the pictures are of a lake were you can fish. they will relate to my mag the text only fishermen will know what its talking about. The pictures are of fish and they will relate to it because the size of the fish and the look of the fish when we were taking the photos I thought they were the same as what you would see in a mag. Unit 4 GC 3: Understand how audiences can respond to media products Task 1 Using your product, conduct a survey (of at least 8 people) that aims to gauge audience opinion of your product. No,no,no,no,yes,yes,yes,no Have you ever fished? Yes,yes,no,no,no,no,no,no Task 2 Write a report presenting your results of your survey. Consider the following:  How have different ages, genders etc responded to your product?  Were you surprised with the results?  Do your results show that your product has reached your desired target audience? There wasn’t much difference apart from 1 or 2 boys fished and no girls. No I was surprised with the results because that was what I thought was going to happen because not everyone likes fishing. It was close but I know it could have been better the spelling was not good I should have spent more time on the magazine and then it would have been a lot better and more writing and information.
