Disadvantages of Written Communication

 Does not save upon the costs.
 If separated by distance, the response is not
spontaneous.
 Time-consuming as the feedback is not immediate.
 The encoding and sending of message takes time.
 Requires great skills and competencies in language
and vocabulary use.
 Poor writing skills and quality have a negative impact
on organization’s reputation.
 Too much paper work and e-mails burden is
involved.

NON – VERBAL COMMUNICATION:
It is the language of body, space,
surroundings etc…
Scientific studies show that the total impact of
a message is formed as follows:
 45% = Vocal part
 55% = Non-verbal (body movements &
gestures)..
Non-verbal communication:

1. It is the most easily visible aspect of
communication.
2. It complements verbal communication.
3. It helps in establishing understanding.
4. It increases process of communication.
5. It can describe the mental status of
person. _

1). KINESICS/BODY LANGUAGE: _ _
We have to derive meanings from body
symbols like- Face, Eyes, Gestures, Posture,
Physical Appearance.
[A] Facial Expression: It includes the
expression of eyes, lips, cheeks, nose etc.
These are associated with happiness,
surprise, fear, anger, sadness etc. _ _
Non-verbal communication: kinesics

[B]. Eye contact: Most important aspect.
Eye contact and eye movements are
important.
It includes expression of eyebrows, eyelids,
size of pupil etc.
Anger & surprise are best reflected here.

It includes physical movements of arms, legs,
hands, fingers etc. eg

[D]. Head, Body shape & Posture:

shape, Way of Sitting, & Standing. eg 

It includes clothing, Hair & Hairstyle,
Jewellery, Cosmetics, Shoes etc.
Every occasion has a particular Dress code,
which must be followed. _

2). PARALANGUAGE: (How to communicate)
It emphasizes on Voice features like: Pitch
Variation, Intensity (speed), Pause, Non-
fluencies, Rhythm, Volume variation* etc._.
It reflects speaker’s education, background, mental
state etc.

3).Proxemics (Space Language), Time
Language & Surroundings:
{Proxemics = study of how we communicate
with the space around us.}
Distance between people tell the relations &
nature of communication.
There are four Proxemics zones.
Public zone, Social zone, Personal zone,
Intimate zone. _
Non-verbal communication: Proxemics

# Proxemics zone:
(Distance between 2 persons)
1) Intimate zone: It includes a distance of 18
inches or less. Family members & closest
friends are included here.
2) Personal zone: 18 inches to 4 ft. Close
relatives & friends are included.
3) Social zone: Distance 4 to 12 ft. Most
business meetings take place in this area.
4) Public zone: Distance of 12 ft. & more.
Suitable for public meetings. _

{Chronemics = study of how we
communicate through use of time.}
We send out signals regarding the
importance of time.
Delay in reply, late arrival may be considered
adversely. _
