Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Barcode: I have chosen the
barcode to be located on each of
the columns. This is because I want
to be able to have enough room for
the front cover design and make the
barcode less of an eyesore.
Masthead: For the first front cover I
have located the masthead in the top
left so it can be clearly visible by the
reader. Furthermore, similarly to the
second front cover, the logo is near
to/on the main image, effectively
advertising the name of the magazine
so they can distinctively identify it.
Main Image: Both front covers will
feature the front cover in the centre as I
would like the main image to be the
forefront to what the reader initially looks
at. This using the image to be eye
catching.
Strapline: The strapline ‘Music in Common’
will be located in the top left corner in the
first front cover. I would aim to have it under
the logo so people can find out MICs slogan
which they will be able to relate to.
Puff Promotion: Advertisement which
will appeal the reader to purchase the
magazine as it may be exclusive.
Cover Lines: This is where I will highlight the
artists featured within the magazine and the
topics I talk about.
Headline: One of the main features of the
front cover relating to the artist featured
on the main image and what is the type of
topics are about them in the magazine.
Anchorage Text: text supporting the
headline and the main image.
3. Images: I will be using one of the
other images from the ones that I
took for the front cover to be used for
the double page spread. Adding
character to the article.
Drop Capital: Indicates where the
text for the interview starts so the
reader can deduce this by the
large single letter.
Pull Quote: This will be where I mention
about the interview and making the
reader stop the read the interview as it
may include a topic that they have some
or no knowledge about.
Quote Box: like the pull quote however
has evidence of the interview. Is there for
the reader to be enticed to read on.
Text: Where the interview will be located
on the double page spread. For both of my
magazines are found on the second page.
4. MIC
Front Cover- Out of the two that I drew, each of the two
have different features which I would like to combine into
one. For example, the position of the logo to the headline
overlaying the image. Having the masthead and in the top
left corner connotes the ideology that of direct appeal. First
instinctive look at a magazine is from left to right, so would
be beneficial to centre main topics that are within the
magazine and highlight them to the reader.
Double Page- The design in the top left would be the one
that I would like to use as my double page spread as it has
an effective layout that addresses reader attention. Having
a large image on side of the double page spread, will
attract the reader wanting to read the magazine. As well as
the use of the pull quote overlaying it, in addition to the
Quote box within the text. Minor features added to the page
such as titles and vinyl lines adds the sense of
professionalism.
5. The colours of my magazine will be
different to my inspiration cover and
will be more bold and basic. The
colours being more appealing to my
target audience of 16-34 year olds,
Red and White colours to stand out
amongst all of the other magazines on
the newsstand. As well using black
colours to make the magazine be bold.
But as well black and gold possibly for
the front cover to give it that premium
look.
The colours of my magazine will be a
classic premium looking, relating to
the artist that would be featured in the
magazines. I would like to use darker
colours which contrast to the main
image and the logo on the front cover.
Within the magazine, I would like to
have similar colours used on the front
cover so I am able to keep the
magazine professional maintaining the
good first impression I am trying to
achieve.
6. York Whiteletter –
Pilaster Davy
Freshman - William Boyd Primetime – Herofonts
York Whiteletter – Pilaster Davy:
This is the font style I will be using for Music
In Common as it looks familiar to the NME
Logo.
Using the website DaFont, I am able to research font styles that will be specific to
my chosen magazine. In the images above are three fonts that I have an interest
in using as my logo for the MIC magazine. I have collated all three of the fonts so
I am able to see which one suits best and appeals to me the most. I have chosen
the font style, York Whiteletter by Pilaster Davy. The reason why I have chosen
this font style is how similar it is to the NME logo, in addition how it is very bold
using the box border surrounding the text gives an effective contrasting look
which can be distinctively seen out of the three.
7. As you are able to see from the spider
diagram that I have thought of a few
names for the two magazines in mind.
Looking at the names of my magazine of
inspirations being XXL, NME and Q, I
have looked to do the same but unique
to the genre. For my chosen magazine
being MIC, the name MIC is shortened
from the name Music in Common.
Relating to the target audiences as the
magazine will be released weekly
suggesting that the name ‘signifies’ that
the ‘music’ is ‘common’ in society.
Moreover, the name could also suggest
how many people always want to hear
the latest and greatest so they are able
to identify MICs aims before they have
started reading the magazine.

8. The images above are the magazines which I will be trying to use repeat
aspects in both of my front covers. The colour scheme and the house styles
displayed in the images are also what I will be wanting to repeat in my
magazines. For my chosen magazine (MIC), I will be repeating the overlapping
image to the logo of the magazine.
As well as this, repeating the plain gradient background with the puffs
highlighting the important topics within the magazine. The bold heading, I will
also include on my magazines front cover.

10. Afternoon Dimzy, How are you?
Hello Bradley, I’m good thank you! How are you?
I'm very good thank you! So recently you have collabed with New Gen?
That’s right our song ‘Jackets’ recently was released with huge success in the grime scene
I listened to it earlier I sounds very unique away from other music that you have featured in!
New gen wanted something different and out of the ordinary for the start of the new year building up what is yet to come!
What do you mean by yet to come?
From the album that we release in September we are beginning to start recording for a new EP that possibly will be released by July of 2017 and as well
New Gen are said to be releasing an album towards the end of January which you need to be on the look out for.
Sound exciting! On the topic of your recent album, the huge success that you gained in the grime scene of the release of the Lets Lurk album
with big names such as A.S.A.P and Giggs, painted your mark in grime. How in 2 years have you done this?
Growing up in North London where there is many crimes and robberies, music became a norm for many people that wanted to get away from the violence
and wanted to express their anger in the music. Our debut album illustrated our groups process to of our individual lives growing up and relating it to each
other and the era of every youth out there.
Any upcoming shows that we are to know of?
We have done/ featured in many concerts in 2016 and plan to be in even more in 2017. As we know a lot of the North London area, we try to perform more
often in places such as Camden where we hold open events or very cheap door fees for the enjoyment to listen to our music or other grime artists. Really
it’s a reason to get waved on stage.
Before you are performing at shows are there any pre-rituals you do with the group?
We are a very spiritual group and we feel that by praying, which we have been brought up to do, will help us out there on stage by giving us the confidence
and ultimately focusing on entertaining the crowds by putting on a performance for them. We also believe that praying together will bring us harmony and
the bond that the 67 family has is immense and means the world to each and everyone.
Do you have any fears when performing?
At the beginning we all do! But as the performance goes on we settle in and relax. We always try a few cool down activities before the performances like
playing darts and praying. Like I said earlier, we like to take a few minutes to reflect and centre ourselves around God and how his guidance will help us out
there.
What is your life like outside of being an artist?
Well I have always been a family man and associate my life around family. So, there is nothing better than being around my parents and siblings on a
weekly basis. Also gives me time away from the media and the volumes of fans that appreciate our music. One of my close friends growing up, got me into
a few sports mainly being golf. I would count myself as a intrigued golfing fan as well as playing it. I find playing gold Maintains my focus throughout life in
different scenarios and is a good way to also relax outside of Music.
Will we be seeing you on the pro tour anytime soon?
no not at all my handicap is only 24! nothing compared to my friend Timmy T who is around 4. I never play to win, i just find it as a form of therapy for me
as playing around the world in different countries hot or cold, is the life!
Finally, is there anything you want to the mic readers?
13. These two designs one being the front cover and double page spread
are two of my favourite. Moreover, they are similar to what NME lay
their front cover out and the double page spread is influenced by Q
Magazine. For the final design I will be using Photoshop as it includes a
variety of tools that will ultimately make a clean and professional front
cover and double page spread.
14. In the images above are the two things I used for the double page spread and
front cover photos. The price of an iPhone 6s is ~£319.00 (Amazon) and the
LED flashlight is £12.99 (Amazon). I will only be using these two products as at
the time of the photos I did not have a DLSR on-hand. As you can see in the
test photography, the images came out very nicely.

20. The environment where I conducted my pitch was in MS1. I used the smart
board to display my Prezi which I made already prior to the presentation.
Moreover, the camera used was a Nikon DSLR on a Sony tripod situated
near to my presentation. For the fluidity of the presentation I was going to
use a slide changer(clicker) to reduce interruptions, however was not
working at the time.
21. In LO1, I had to produce slides on what I needed to
perform my pitch. I completed some rough sketches and
graphical layouts so I am able to present my front covers
and double page spreads for my chosen magazine MIC.
Also the connoting why I have created them for the
efficiency and how it helps me with my final construction of
my magazine front cover and double page spread on
Photoshop. Furthermore, I have created a photogrpahy
plan and prop list which is required for the images on my
front covers. Finally, displaying my production plan which is
highlighting what I will be aiming to complete daily before
the release of the first issue on 1st January.
