1) The new European standard BS EN 13414-1 for wire rope slings includes two changes that lower the working load limit (WLL) calculation: including the efficiency of rope terminations and restricting the rope grade to 1770.
2) This results in a 10% lower WLL calculation for a given rope diameter compared to the previous British standard BS 1290.
3) Initiatives are being considered to amend the standard to allow higher grade 1960 rope to be used, compensating for the lower efficiency of terminations and maintaining the original WLLs.
Improved Inspection of Composite Wind Turbine Blades with Accessible, Advanc...Olympus IMS
Ultrasonic phased array technology provides an effective way to inspect composite wind turbine blades for flaws during manufacturing. Phased array probes use multiple piezoelectric elements that can be electronically controlled to generate beams for scanning blades. This allows for high resolution inspection and detection of flaws like porosity, disbonds, delaminations, and wrinkles. Automated scanning systems can inspect large areas quickly, generating C-scan images to analyze bond quality and adhesive thickness. Ultrasonic phased array offers productivity advantages over conventional UT for the critical task of ensuring blade integrity.
Documents Governing Welding Inspection and QualificationRandall Stremmel
This document discusses various types of documents that govern welding inspection and qualification, including purchase orders, codes, standards, specifications, drawings, and recommended practices. It provides examples of the information contained in fabrication drawings, welding codes and standards, material specifications, and discusses the requirements for procedure and welder qualification. Key points covered include essential welding variables, position and thickness limitations, and the difference between qualifying a welder versus certifying their qualifications.
1. Structural testing was conducted on screws installed through thick exterior insulation for wall assemblies. Different screw types, insulation thicknesses, fastener arrangements, and cladding weights were tested.
2. The testing showed that screws installed through insulation from 3-12 inches thick can structurally support most cladding weights, with deflections generally under 1/8 inches. Longer screws had higher load capacities.
3. Additional guidance is needed for designers on allowable loads, fastener types and spacing, and installation methods when using screws through thick exterior insulation.
This document discusses solid rivets, including their identification and installation. It provides information on the two main types of rivet heads: countersunk and universal. Countersunk rivets are flush with the skin for a smooth aerodynamic surface, especially important on fighter aircraft. Rivets are identified by codes indicating size, material, and head type, such as AN426 for a countersunk aluminum rivet. The document reviews the steps for solid rivet installation, which involves drilling holes, inserting rivets, and setting them in place using a rivet gun or squeezer.
This document describes and provides specifications for various products used in earthing and lightning protection systems, including: copper bonded earth rods, couplers, clamps, brackets, terminals, and tapes. The products are made from materials like copper, steel, and copper alloys. They come in various sizes and thread diameters to accommodate different conductor diameters and system configurations.

This document provides an overview of the history and principles of phased array ultrasonic testing. It originated in medical ultrasound in the late 1960s with early work focusing on electronically steering ultrasound beams through variable time delays between array elements. Improvements in electronics and understanding of grating lobes and dynamic focusing overcame limitations of early systems. While medical ultrasound continues to drive advances, non-destructive testing applications of phased arrays have grown significantly in recent decades enabled by increased computing power. The document reviews wave mechanics principles and how these apply to both single element probes and phased arrays. It also provides background on mechanized inspection systems and data acquisition typically used with phased array testing.
This document provides instructions and procedures for performing various experiments on electrical machines in a laboratory, including open and short circuit tests on single phase transformers to determine efficiency and regulation, tests on alternators to determine voltage regulation, and experiments on synchronous and asynchronous machines. Safety rules and procedures for the laboratory are outlined. The document serves as a manual for students carrying out hands-on experiments to complement their theoretical learning about electrical machines.
This paper reviews major research developments over the past few years in application of acoustic emission in numerous engineering fields, including manufacturing, civil, aerospace and material engineering.
Acoustic Emission (AE) refers to the generation of transient elastic waves produced by a sudden redistribution of stress in a material. When a structure is subjected to an external stimulus (change in pressure, load, or temperature), localized sources trigger the release of energy, in the form of stress waves, which propagate to the surface and are recorded by sensors. With the right equipment and setup, motions on the order of picometers (10 -12 m) can be identified. Sources of AE vary from natural events like earthquakes and rockbursts to the initiation and growth of cracks, slip and dislocation movements, melting, twinning, and phase transformations in metals. In composites, matrix cracking and fiber breakage and debonding contribute to acoustic emissions. AE’s have also been measured and recorded in polymers, wood, and concrete, among other materials.
