Patrick is Senior Vice President at Interface Inc., the global market leader in modular floor coverings, and acknowledged visionaries in the application of sustainable business and manufacturing processes. Patrick assumed this role in July of 2008, with the goal of planning and executing the development of a new manufacturing base for the company, in China. In addition to the new plant, Interface has well-established sales and design teams operating from studios in Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong along with a marketing group also based in Shanghai. After a modest academic start in life, his own desire to continue learning led him to complete a degree in Marketing early in his career, whilst working. Having benefited from such opportunities himself, Patrick is now actively committed to the training and development of others. In this presentation, Patrick would be giving the first China exposure to a piece of research work Interface has commissioned, titled Human Spaces. It looks at the proven results from the use of Biophilic Design in terms of human well being, and has been prepared by a distinguished team including renowned architects.

Matt graduated from Auburn University’s School of Architecture in 2008. For his thesis project, he was selected to attend the Rural Studio where he spent 18 months designing and building innovative housing for the underprivileged in rural Alabama. After his time at Rural Studio, Matt lived in Green River, Utah where his oversaw the design and construction of a new Community Center.
In 2010 Matt came to China to work for ATKINS Global. During his time at ATKINS, he was chosen to oversee the companies volunteer campaign with INCLUDED. Eventually Matt left Atkins to return to the world of social design. In January 2012 Matt joined INCLUDED full time as the resident architect and Design Director. Matt draws from his design experience with social design in America as he pursues the goal of designing innovative, affordable, and dignified solutions for migrant families.
Matt discusses his work with this organization, INCLUDED. His presentation reviews the evolution of different community center designs for migrant children and their families that attempt to address various problems of informality and instability inherent within migrant slums. He will discusses design’s roll in the context of his organization.
Climate Change and Water Risk
Edward Baker leads the FCO’s work on green finance in china. He has been head of the British Consulate in Shanghai’s climate change & energy section for the past three years. Edward has initiated and led UK – East China collaborations on carbon trading, industrial up cycling, green finance and climate risks. Prior to joining the consulate he worked as consultant and project managers for companies in the energy and clean tech sectors. Edward graduated from Sheffield University in the UK.
The joy of sharing－Wanjuzuzu
Lisa Feng graduated from Fudan University with a BS degree in Chemistry in 2009 and obtained a MS of Water Resources Management and a certificate of Energy Analysis and Policy from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2011. She worked as a senior consultant in Frost & Sullivan between 2011-14, focusing on industrial analysis of energy and power. Meanwhile, she led several maternal and infant projects and got deep understanding of China’s maternal and infant market. In the end of 2014, she has founded Wanjuzuzu, an online Lego rental and sharing platform, in the hope of children having access to more and better toys by means of sharing economy.
In this presentation, she will talk about Wanjuzuzu, and also the opportunity.

An earthship is a type of passive solar house made of natural and recycled materials. Designed and marketed by Earthship Biotecture of Taos, New Mexico, the homes are primarily constructed to work as autonomous buildings and are generally made of earth-filled tires, using thermal mass construction to naturally regulate indoor temperature.

Xenia Sidorenka is a Russian designer and the founder of the UseDem project. Her company's motto is: used denim jeans, use them. Xenia has over 10 years of experience in the fast fashion industry, and is continuoulsy working to change the corporate mindset from a throwaway culture to one of durability, quality and recylability. After the Nepal earthquake, Xenia also launched a project to collect used clothes from the community and provide them to children while raising funds to build a school in the area most heavily effected by the earthquake. Xenia has also been running workshops to teach kids and adults on how to recycle old jeans and make useful things out of them.
In this presentation, Xenia will talk about her company UseDem, which to her is also a project about healthy relationships - with the community and with the environment.

Andrea Liu is a Shanghai-based social entrepreneur. She is the co-founder of LOHAUS – The lifestyle of Health and Urban Sustainability. A social enterprise established in June 2013. Each year we try to make an impact on urban sustainability with a major initiative. In 2013 it was our promotion of LED lighting for energy efficiency and home cost savings. In 2014, it was the Solar Shanghai Initiative. Around April 2014, LOHAUS became the first building in downtown Shanghai to have grid-connected solar panels installed on its rooftop. In 2015, We were the partner with “THE VENTURE” - A global social enterprise competition. 2016, 《LOHAUS》will be published in June.

Ma Lie is Founder and President of Greenment Environment with nearly 25 years experience in environmental engineering and management consulting. Prior to the establishment of Greenment Environment, Mr. Ma had worked as Vice President/China Country Manager for CH2M and Director of Corporate Risk Management for ERM China. As a pioneer in the field contaminated land management in China, Mr. Ma has been involved in many of major remediation projects in China. Mr. Ma is a member of contaminated site management expert panel of Shanghai Government. Ma Lie obtained BS degree in Environmental Engineer from Tongji University and MBA degree from CEIBS.

In 2014, the Internet Society launched a project to address the perceived gap between Operators and the IETF. The objective of this project is ultimately to facilitate communications between the operator community and the IETF to help ensure that operational realities inform the development of key standards. The first phase of this project was a survey of the operator community that was conducted over the first half of 2014. This talk aims to synthesize the survey results, along with information we collected directly from operators during the survey window. The primary purpose of doing this is to start a conversation which we hope will lead to increases in the level of operational input and feedback to the IETF standards making process. We understand the problems, now let’s start finding solutions!

But when robots and algorithms diminish individual agency by making decisions on our behalf, when the liability of their actions becomes too complex to assess or when Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics are transforming our jobs, we must question if this will increase or decrease our well-being. Humans can’t thrive unless metrics prioritizing positive mental and emotional health are elevated as key indicators of a flourishing society.
Heartificial Intelligence - the Intersection of Emerging Technology Beyond GDP features John C. ION Cape Town - IETF, Operational Experience, and Africa
ION Cape Town, 8 September 2015: The Internet Society is working toward fostering a larger and more engaged network operator community around the IETF and protocol development work. Part of that work was a survey of network operators in 2014 and an Internet-Draft about its results. We’re also interested specifically in bringing more African engineers with operational experience into the IETF, and perhaps even bringing a physical IETF meeting to the continent of Africa within the next few years. We’ll outline some of our recent work and hope to make this an interactive session to learn from the local community how to encourage more IETF participation.

The London Black Cab driver's exam, "The Knowledge of the Streets and Monuments of London," is one of the most difficult exams in the world, requiring drivers to become a human GPS. With today's tools, the smartphone and the right app turns anyone into the equivalent of a human GPS. Bio-Based Material Applications by Daniel Gao, DSM
Daniel's talk will cover the myths of bioplastics and degradation, how bioplastics can allevieate the problem of plastic pollution, and how they can be best used to not cause harm to the environment.
Daniel Gao majored in Biomass Science and Technology at South China University of Technology, where his research focused on applications of bio-based materials. He has had three papers published internationally and issued two patents (one pending). He currently works as an Account Manager in the DSM engineering plastic department, and is in charge of business maintenance and development in South China and Zhejiang province. As a member of DSM Sustainability Ambassadors, he joined One Young World Summit in Bogota in 2017, focusing on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, participates in DSM sustainability activities and is responsible for promoting sustainable product portfolio solutions.
Bioplastics: Myth or Solution by Dr Jim Jem
What are the underlying biases and preconceived notions that we have about the products labelled "bio" or "green"? Are there other “bio”s that we need to be wary of?
Dr Jem's talk will cover bioplastics from a holistic perspective, with a focus on: types of bioplastics, pro's and con's of PLA, how is PLA 'industrially' recycled or composted, innovations in the bioplastics world, other plant-based packaging alternatives, etc.
Dr. Jem received his Ph.D. and 2 Masters degrees in biochemical engineering, and numerous awards in the USA, and worked 15 years in engineering, biotech, and pharmaceutical companies such as Ratheon, Serono, Diversa, with excellent track record with multiple awards. In 2000, he moved back to China to work for biotech and bioplastic companies such as Cargill and NatureWorks PLA. He has served as the China General Manager for Total Corbion PLA JV and previously for Corbion Purac since 2007, and serves as a Visiting Professor for several local Universities.

In this presentation, Kyle presents us the results from three years of research that he and his team conducted to discover how to address air quality both indoors and outdoors through the way we design buildings. Their studies included the efficiency of Living Walls, the effectivity of particulates at various altitudes, and conceptualization of a prototype lung to passively clean air.
Kyle is the Founder and Research Director for Gensler’s “Design for Polluted and Toxic Environments”. His research seeks to use design as a way to problem solve issues related to indoor and outdoor air quality. He has received awards for his work as a designer from AIA, IIDA, US Green Building Council, ID Best of the Year Award, FX International Interior Design Award, Blue Print Design Award, Surface Design Award, and A2asia Award. Additionally, Kyle is a Lecturer at Tongji University’s Design Innovation School & FabO Maker Space, and recently joined forces with the Climate Reality Project, led by former US Vice President Al Gore as a “Global Climate Leader” and Mentor.

Shangbai has over 20 years of experience in Farmer Field School where he has been responsible for adult education with a participatory approach, research, and management. His work has provided significant opportunities to enhance the sustainability of agriculture and forestry, and reduce the negative environmental and health impact of pesticide use in agriculture and forestry. Shangbai holds a Bachelors degree in Plant Protection and a Masters degree in Entomology from the Huazhong Agriculture University in Wuhan, China. He also received his PhD in Systematic Ecology from Beijing Normal University.

She began as a volunteer but soon became a devoted activist promoting both domestic as well as international organic movements, often teaming up with biofarmers with distinct backgrounds. Jane has further actively promoted various grassroots projects including, school organic gardens, social service with CSR partners, biofarmers’ training, slow food, community-supported agriculture (CSA)-based farmers’ market promotion, etc.

Andrew Sigfrids is a American designer and is the founder of ASIG Design, a multi-discipline boutique design studio based in Shanghai. ASIG Design designs a range of projects and works with a range of clients primarily focusing on architecture, interior design and furniture design. Andrew started the studio in 2010 as a furniture retailer with a store located in the French Concession that gave customers a unique experience of designing bespoke in-store and seeing the results within a month after being manufactured in Shanghai. From there, ASIG Design has spun off the retail sector and now focuses on project work doing architecture and interior design projects for Chinese and international clients like Yershari, Starbucks and ABInbev. In addition, a team within the studio focuses soley on industrial and furniture design for domestic and international companies that are seeking marketable products manufactured in China, which reinforces the notion of 'designed in China'.

The beginning of colonial policy in the area was signaled by the British annexation of the Cachar district in southern Assam in 1832. The region became an alluring investment opportunity for Europeans after British rule over Cachar, especially after the accidental discovery of wild tea in 1855. Within this historical context, this study explores three major stages that characterize the evolution of nature. First, it examines the distribution and growth of tea plantations, examining their size and rate of expansion. The second aspect of the study examines the consequences of land concessions, which led to the initial loss of native forests. Finally, the study investigates the increased strain on forests caused by migrant workers' demands. It also highlights the crucial role that the Forest Department plays in protecting these natural habitats from the invasion of tea planters. This study aims to analyze the intricate relationship between colonialism and the altered landscape of Cachar, Assam, by means of a thorough investigation, shedding light on the environmental, economic, and societal aspects of this historical transformation.
