Violent Video Games Benefits
In 2013, President Obama requested congress to allocate ten million dollars for the research of the
effects violent video games pose towards adolescents. Although many studies exist on the impact of
video games, few have focused on the benefits. News stations are so quick to spread information on
the negative effects that no one has taken into consideration that video games might have positive
effects. I believe that taking a balanced perspective is essential to discovering the truth, especially with
video games. While true that little research has been devoted to the benefits of video games, it is the
opposite for the functions of play. Erikson (1977) thought that children, by simulating different
occasions, as well as alternative emotional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is especially true with shooter video games, such as Halo 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV. A 2012
study took naive gamers that rarely or never played shooter games, and randomly assigned them to
play either a shooter game or another type of video game. The gamers playing shooter games showed
faster and more accurate attention allocation, high spatial resolution in visual processing, and
enhanced mental rotation abilities. A meta analysis concluded that these spatial skills improvements
are comparable to formal (high school and university level) courses designed to improve these same
skills. This same meta analysis found that these spatial skills trained can be trained by video games in
a relatively short amount of time and last for an extended period of time. Of course, these skills
transfer to other spatial tasks outside of game. Preliminary research has also shown that these
cognitive advantages manifest in neural processing and efficiency. An fMRI study found that the areas
that control attention allocation were less active during a challenging pattern finding puzzle in gamers
than in non gamers, leading the researchers to believe that shooter game players are more efficient in
attention allocation and more effective at filtering out unneeded information. Cognitive neuroscientists
have begun to send requests to video game companies asking to develope games designed to test
hypotheses and the specific mechanisms that provide different cognitive benefits. In addition to spatial
skills, some scholars believe that videogames are important in developing problem solving skills. This
growth is shown between all genres. The game puzzles range from finding the quickest route from A
to B, to using memorization and analytical skills to learn complicated action sequences. Also, game
developers often provide very little

Dumping Subsidy and Trade Disputes Essay
Dumping Subsidy and Trade Disputes Too many questions have been asked if dumping implies unfair
trade practices. Recently, disputes over dumping make it difficult to decide whether or not we should
allow this activity to enter our country. Many of us are equally familiar that more foreign imports
mean more jobs are being destroyed in American industries. Because of this particular reason, WTO
and GATT members have worked together to see if there is a relationship between dumping and unjust
trades. In their study, some have discovered that dumping benefits the economy and helps increase
competitions among various industries in the U.S. However, there were also some others who took the
opposite side by arguing that dumping is an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, if dumping is introduced, trade may emerge. Each firm will limit the quantity that it sells in
its home market, recognizing that if it tries to sell more it will drive down the price on its existing
domestic sales. If a firm can sell a little bit in the other market, however, it will add to its profit even if
the price is lower than in domestic market, because the negative effect on the price of existing sales
will fall on the other firm, not on itself. So each firm has an incentive to raid the other market, selling
a few units at a price that is lower than the home market, but still above marginal cost ( krugman
p.146). Thus trade between the two countries emerges but in a way that is unclear if it is beneficial to
our domestic economy. To explain how dumping affects trade, let s look at its mathematical structure
given by Professor Steve Beckman from University of Colorado at Denver. Firms with monopoly
power have marginal revenue MR = P + P Q where P is the slope of the demand curve, the change in
the price divided by the change in quantity sold dP/dQ . All firms profit maximize by choosing output
such that marginal cost equals marginal revenue which is MR=MC=P + P Q. So, the firm s markup
over price is P Q = P MC. Monopoly power is commonly defined as (P Q)/P = (P MC)/P or the
percentage markup over cost (Beckman). Professor Beckman reasoned that

The Rampage of Polio
During the twentieth century Americans were afraid. They were afraid of the Russians, they were
afraid of the economy, they were afraid of Hitler, and they were afraid of polio. A disease as
indiscriminate as a nuclear bomb, it struck young and old, rich and poor, white and black. It caused
fear and hysteria, confusion and anger, paralysis, and even death. By this time the United States had
endured smallpox, cholera, yellow fever, and tuberculosis; but it had never experienced a wide spread
epidemic of a disease that seemed to specifically target children before the twentieth century.
Although polio effects people of all ages, children are the most susceptible due to their weak immune
systems. Many victims of polio were partially or completely paralyzed, and thousands died. The
summer plague would run rampant in the United States for nearly four decades. Before the 1890 s
polio was fairly common but largely unknown. The disease was very common in early history due to a
lack of sanitation but because many people contracted the disease they developed immunity to that
strain at an early age. If the infected persons lived through the early infection they were then immune
to that particular strain of polio. This meant that in excess of 90% of some populations were immune,
while less than 0.5% were paralyzed due to polio. Evidence has been found of polio in the ancient
world. Some scientists believe hieroglyph depictions of people

The Vietnam War And The Effects Of The Vietnam War
Until today, the Vietnam War is still remembered as one of the most memorable war throughout
history. In this war, the United States played a very big part in the war. Since the war took place in
Vietnam, a lot of Vietnamese people got affected from the war. In this paper we will discuss about the
effects from the Vietnam War. And further on explain on how did it affect the United States soldiers,
Vietnamese people, and the massive deadly weapons that are used in the Vietnam War. Viet Minh is a
Vietnamese communist whose forces fought against the Japanese and against the French in Indochina.
On May 7, 1954 Viet Minh won the war of Bien Phu and ended the French involvement in Indochina.

things/equipments to support the military. It also caused increase in taxes because the country has lost
an enormous amount of money to the war. It had caused 2 millions soldiers who were sent to the war
either wounded, missing in action, or dead. Even though America was scarred from the war, Vietnam
left the war more affected than America. The American military dropped Agent Orange, which was
exposed to 4 million people and 3 million people suffered from it. It has caused people in North
Vietnam to migrate in large populations to South Vietnam, tripling the population from 2 million to 8
million. Deadly weapons and equipments are used in the war, which both sides were affected from it:
Vietnamese soldiers and the American soldiers. Napalm for example was dropped by the Americans,
which burned down the Vietnam s forest, exposing the Vietnamese hiding place, and killing innocent
civilians. Booby traps that were made by the Vietnamese caused a lot of American soldier to be
wounded or dead. Booby traps like the camouflaging spikes under the leaves, punji pit, rope trap,
hidden ropes to set of grenades, shoot off arrows, or even send a log slamming were responsible for
many American casualties. The Vietnam War has influenced the US economically, socially,
environmentally, and and morality of US citizens. Today, decades after the war ended,

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks Essay
Henrietta Lacks is not a common household name, yet in the scientific and medical world it has
become one of the most important and talked names of the century. Up until the time that this book
was written, very few people knew of Henrietta Lacks and how her cells contributed to modern
science, but Rebecca Skloot aimed to change this. Eventually Skloot was able to reach Henrietta s
remaining family and through them she was able to tell the story of not only the importance of the
HeLa cells but also Henrietta s life. Although she was taken from the world too soon, Henrietta Lacks
was a warm hearted woman, and though unbeknownst to her, she would pave the way for the medical
field and greatly expand our understanding of one of the nation s ... Show more content on

Then it was transferred to George Gey s lab, where they would cultivate it and attempt to grow new
cells from the sample, however, there was not much hope for the sample, as they all eventually died
within days, sometimes even hours. Henrietta s cells changed this, after multiple days of being
cultivated and still living, Gey began to realize that he had discovered something amazing, and he
slowly started to share his discovery with the world. When the cells finally began growing in Gey s
lab it was seen as a huge advance in the world of science, seeing as no one had succeeded beforehand,
this was a great accomplishment on his part. However, Henrietta was never told of this or how
important her cells had become, she simply continued living without knowing that the cancerous cells
inside her were continuing to grow despite receiving treatment from the doctors. Her only treatment
was a small patch of radiation sewn directly into her cervix on the area where the tumor had appeared,
after some tests showed that the tumor had disappeared she continued with her normal life of farming,
raising her children, and enjoying life. Henrietta never complained about any side effects of the
radiation, however, it eventually would make her infertile and cause her skin on her torso to turn
black. Dr. Gey announced his discovery of the immortal cells to the world, yet many people did not
believe him at first considering there

West England White Terrier Research Paper
The West Highland White Terrier is an adorable, hardy small dog that is relatively easy to train. This
breed has gained an enormous popularity over the recent years due to its attractive overall appearance,
particularly his coat which is one of the breed s most striking features. His cute and handy size, along
with his superb sporting instinct makes him suitable for town or country living. He gets along very
well with children as well as other dogs which makes him a wonderful family dog.
Size: The average size for a healthy adult West Highland White Terrier is about 11in. There is no

Exercise: He can easily get used to town or country living and be satisfied either indoors or in a
kennel. However, he will be happiest as an indoor pet that is allowed to run around inside the house
and gets enough chance to be taken out for a walk. Keep in mind that this breed was originally used as
a working dog with the job to hunt badger and fox. He is also a good ratter and enjoys a lively game of
ball.
Grooming: The West Highland White Terrier is a great choice for a family who wants an active and
healthy dog. But if you have a busy lifestyle and do not have the time to spend on regular grooming,
perhaps you should think twice about getting this breed. His coat needs to be brushed and combed
everyday. In addition, he needs his coat trimmed twice a year, particularly in the neckline. Straggly
hairs need to be removed from ears and tail. Ideally, his coat should be more or less 2in long with the
neck and throat hair

you to marry me in then tilts his head quizzically to the side trying to gauge her expression. She does
not respond. The audience are, wondering why she isn t responding to him. The shot is still an over the
shoulder shot, Dr Crowe sits down mouthing the work ok . This illustrates to the audience that he has
accepted her being in a mood. They can see that Dr Crowe is still upset about Anna not replying. Then
Dr Crowe tries again I m sorry I just don t seem to be able to keep track of time He is tired and I didn t

Science And Christianity Similarities
Religion and science are two subjects most would choose not to discuss in the same vicinity. History
has shown how quarrelsome doing so can be. However, as history has progressed into the modern
world both science and religion have become more accepted by their somewhat rival. Might this
suggest, after the centuries of debate and controversy, that science and religion have somehow grown
to be congruent? Perhaps not all religions, for not all religions can agree with one another, let alone
science. Despite past differences, the more science and Christianity are studied and compared, some
might see similarities. Ultimately, both science and Christianity very well could be attributed to one

This Source Is Very Closely Related To My Research Question
This source is very closely related to my research question regarding age and attitudes towards
cyberbullying. The study broke down the participants into five age groups and examined their
cyberbullying attitudes, perpetrations, and technology time. It determined that there is a negative
correlation between age and these variables, showing that generally, those who are younger are more
likely to believe that cyberbullying is a major concern for school going minors. That being said, the
youngest and oldest groups generally are less likely to have this attitude since they are not likely to
have experienced cyberbullying. The middle groups most likely have direct or indirect experience
with this problem. However, it was found that overall, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This study looked at a number of different factors related to cyberbullying, particularly focusing on
the victims themselves. The section on age and grade level most relates to my research topic. They
found that in their research on students in fifth, eight, and tenth grades, cyberbullying victimization
rates started low, rose in middle school, and sank again in high school. It appears that there is a
curvilinear relationship between age and frequency of victimization and according to this study, the
worst cyberbullying occurs in middle school. Therefore, this would imply that attitudes towards
cyberbullying and its threat to school going minors would be low at young ages, increase through
puberty and adolescence, and decrease again after around ninth grade. While it relates topically to the
two previous sources, the findings of this study are slightly different than them. This one highlights
that the relationship takes a parabolic or curved shape compared to a straight negative slope.

Food Insecurity Essay
Listening to conversations about food on campus, I found that there was a common theme last year: it
was difficult to find healthy food on campus. I think we ll find that to be less of the case this year,
especially with N Rich recently opening in the Union, and a new service called Instacart that will
deliver groceries to campus. However, despite an expanded variety of options to purchase fresh fruits
and vegetables, the problem of food insecurity has hardly been addressed. Food insecurity is the state
of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food, according to the
Oxford Dictionary. It is a widespread problem on college campuses across the nation. While food
insecurity only impacts 14% of households, 48% of college students claim to be food insecure. This
problem disproportionately impacts first generation college students, students of color, and students
who need financial aid, as noted by the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and
Homelessness. Today, these students still have few resources to address this problem. Last year, I was
excited to see N Rich open. I toured inside and out, and saw that it increased my options to buy
healthy food on campus. Though there s valid argument that N Rich s variety is small, for the first
time in my college career, I did not have to travel over a mile to buy an onion. N Rich opens up
options for students with more meal plan money than they need. But for students who need to ration

Class Differences in the Novel Rebecca Essay
In the book, Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, there exist a big emphasis on social class and position
during the time of this story. When we are introduced to the main character of the story, the narrator,
we are right away exposed to a society in which different privileges are bestowed upon various
groups. Social place, along with the ever present factor of power and money are evident throughout
the story to show how lower to middle class groups were treated and mislead by people on a higher

When you look at an example like this one, you start to think whether or not these upper class people
believed in their own morals and if they even had any. But one thing is for sure, such arrogant actions
only go a short way until they come back to haunt you. Because Mrs. Van Hopper was so blinded by
her own self and worried so much about what was going on in other people s lives, she had lost her
attention from her companion friend, which let to a love affair between the narrator and Mr. Maxim de
Winter.
Maxim de Winter was a culture, intelligent old man, and the proud carrier of the de Winter name and
estate of Manderley. He exemplifies all the traits of a rich upper class gentleman and goes out of his
way to take Mrs. Van Hopper s companion out for a little fun. He sees the crude and vulgar treatment
that the narrator is going through and tries to compensate for her and treat her in a more appropriate
manner. With her modest frame, the narrator accepts such an offer because she knows that her stay in
Monte Carlo was only for someone else s benefits and not hers. As in all stories, the poor, young
beautiful woman, falls for a rich and sophisticated man who shows her that even though society is
segmented into different classes, love can bind any two people. For this you begin to see the other side
of the rich and aristocratic world. In Maxim de Winter you begin to realize that to him, all the money

Mich Masala Analysis
In the film Mirch Masala, the movie brings to light a critical point in Indian feminism. The film takes
place in the 1940s in a small village of colonial India. It acknowledges the interactions of the
protagonists struggle due to the power relations in the village. The subedar is a (tax collector) who
travels to villages with his soldiers and order payment of land taxes. Due to their power, they
intimidate the villages and seize women. The subedar who is lustful for women, is fascinated by
Sonbai, whose husband left the village due to his new job. Sonbai is a woman who works in a spice
factory. The subedar is intrigued by her confidence, beauty, and intelligence which, makes him pursue
her. Sonbai encounters the oppressive realities of life for a woman in India. Rejecting the advances of
the subedar, Sonbai is forced to take safety in a pepper factory. I will analyze the use of the spice red
chili pepper as it serves as a powerful image in the film. Red chili peppers are used as a metaphor that
can be can invoke many meanings. Chili pepper in the movie is used as a symbol of resistance against
the patriarchal oppression that the Indian women face in the movie.
In the beginning of the film, the director makes a point to show red chili peppers that are grown and
are ready to be plucked. Furthermore, a man plucks the chili pepper and shucks it a vase on top of a
scarecrows head breaking the vase. This scene symbolizes that women are seen as a hot spice . Shroff
s writing about the importance of the scene states This image of the luscious chili, red on the outside,
spicy and explosive on the inside, prefigures its role as the chief ingredient in this narrative and
emphasizes from the outset its double meaning the sexual power of the women and their ability to use
their power to resist oppression within the family and society (249). The chili pepper symbolizes the
effect of sexual desires and the portrayal of women.
In the film, the subedar gives an obscene offer of sex to Sonbai. She is so offended that she slaps him
in the face and flees away. Shroff states her power is perceived by the Subedar as an act of
transgression that violates his honor, and takes away from his role of playing God (251). Sonbai is a

Stanford Prison Experiment Essay
When put into an authoritative position over others, is it possible to claim that with this new power
individual(s) would be fair and ethical or could it be said that ones true colors would show? A group of
researchers, headed by Stanford University psychologist Philip G. Zimbardo, designed and executed
an unusual experiment that used a mock prison setting, with college students role playing either as
prisoners or guards to test the power of the social situation to determine psychological effects and
behavior (1971). The experiment simulated a real life scenario of William Golding s novel, Lord of the

To ensure to have satisfactory results in his study, Zimbardo required some preconditions. One of
which was the period of time for the experiment to be conducted. He believed that one to two weeks
would be essential in providing our research participants with sufficient time for them to become fully
engaged in their experimentally assigned roles of either guards or prisoners. Having [our] participants
live in that setting day and night, if prisoners, or work for long eight hour shifts, if guards, would also
allow sufficient time for situational norms to develop and patters of social interaction to emerge,
change and become crystallized (Zimbardo, 2013). Other preconditions he had were the mentalities of
his volunteers; are they normal, healthy mentally and physically, are they without any prior history of
conviction or drug usage? Some other preconditions were to make the experimental setting bear a
resemblance as closely to a functional simulation of the psychology of imprisonment as humanly
possible. He also wanted to make sure that there was the absence of any earlier indoctrination in how
to play the randomly assigned roles; to leave that up to each participant s prior societal teachings of
the meaning of prisons and the behavioral scripts associated with the oppositional roles (Zambardo,
2005). Although he had a significantly large abundance

No Universally Accepted Theory Of Management
No Universally Accepted Theory of Management
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
We can safely state that no single theory of management is universally accepted today. To provide a
useful historical perspective that will guide our study of modern management, we shall discuss five
different approaches to management : (1) the universal process approach, (2) the operational approach,
(3) the behavioral approach, (4) the systems approach, and (5) the contingency approach.
Understanding these general approaches to the theory and practice of management can help you
appreciate how management has evolved, where it is today, and where it appears to be headed. Each
of the five approaches to management represents a different conceptual framework for better
understanding the practice of management.
THE UNIVERSAL PROCESS APPROACH

The universal process approach is the oldest and one of the most popular approaches to management
thought. It is also known as the universalist or functional approach. According to the universal process
approach, the administration of all organizations, public or private and large or small, requires the

The best they can offer is the much abused commerce clause and even that falls short given that refers
to commerce between the states, not between neighbours and friends.
This is a very important, but rarely discussed issue that goes to the central tenets of liberty.
Our civil rights are based upon the control of private property. In fact one could argue that it s not
even private property if it s under government edict. While some would like to cite the adage that
possession is nine tenths of the law the reality is that ownership is vested in the entity that controls an
item s storage, use and transference. If the government controls those parameters it is the true owner
of that property with the people being it s temporary possessors.
There are those desirous of control who want people to think that firearms as somehow different than
other items of property, simply because those items are a constraint over governmental power. While
lorries and other motorised vehicles can be deadly, they don t serve as a constraint on tyranny so they
are no concern of the Left. The plain fact is that firearms aren t any different than other types of
property. As it is with the government, the slippery slope will see them try to control other types of
property if it can get people to accept it with firearms.

What Is The Theme Of The Country Husband By John Cheever
1. Introduction Literary scholars and critics have often commented upon the structural complexity of
John Cheever s short story The Country Husband . For example, George W. Hunt argues that it is a
long story, so rich in accident and in emotional colorations that it reads more like a novella (273).
Often cited is also Vladimir Nabokov s expression that the story under discussion is [a] miniature
novel (qtd. in Dessner 58). Hence, it is quite safe to assert that the body of this work of literature is
rich in imagery, various motifs and symbols. The war imagery is just the one of the most discussed
issues (e.g., Hipkiss 577 579). According to Lawrence Jay Dessner, [n]ot a page in The Country

Imagery In Batman
A giant hole is ripped in the side of a skyscraper. Smoke and flames pour out and debris tumbles into
the street. Clouds of smoke billow upwards and burning embers rain down. Plumes of dust and smoke
blot out the sun, darkening the city skyline. In the foreground, a figure stands defiantly, his
confrontational gaze burning with dark intensity.
This imagery is hauntingly familiar. The flaming wing shaped hole in the side of the building, the

Likewise, the previous Batman film, Batman Begins (2005), displays an overt preoccupation with
terrorism. From the use of fear as a weapon, to the plot to destroy Gotham s most iconic skyscraper,
the film allegorizes 9/11 in a way that is jarring in its bluntness.
These films, both co written and directed by Christopher Nolan, are not alone in their engagement
with modern day anxieties about terrorism. In the seven years following September 11th, 2001,
numerous novels, films, poems, plays, paintings and photographs have engaged the events in an
attempt to transmute emotional responses and historical fact into a cohesive narrative. Some, such as
Oliver Stone s World Trade Center, have celebrated heroes of the tragedy. Others, such as Don DeLillo
s Falling Man, have endeavored to extract cultural meaning from these traumatic

Materials Of A Rocket Or Space Shuttle
Abstract: Many people think that going to the outer space is not that complex when talking about the
materials of a rocket or space shuttle. Most people believe that metal is all that is needed and that in
fact that is all it has. The truth is that it required a lot of research and procedures to come up with the
right materials to people to withstand rigorous conditions. In other words, materials had to be
engineered to work with extreme heat, cold and pressure changes. Due to some other issues such as
collision from debris and unforeseen events the space shuttle had to be cancelled. The risks were too
high even with all the engineering of materials.
During the 1955 the race to see who would send the first astronaut to space began between the United
States and the Soviet Union. At that time, they were using rockets without the thought of being reused.
All they really want was to win the race of who would send the first astronaut to space. As time went
by, they decided that the rockets should be able to be reused. The problem with the first designs is that
they were disposable and expensive. So in 1972 the space shuttle program officially began. The
shuttle were a way to lower the costs by having an aircraft connected with a rocket that would boost it
out of space and then be able to land on earth. Therefore, the aircraft would be reused and just have a
new rocket and external tank. The problem was to come up with a material that could be reused

Stereotypes In American Teen
Video games, card collections, hopeless romanticism, and a hint of social awkwardness. These are the
stereotypes of the average geek. The 2008 movie American Teen displays the storyline of Jake Tusing,
the senior who is portrayed as the geek in the Warsaw Community High School. Jake is a introverted
and awkward video game lover, who, in his story, goes through the process of finding a relationship
that would last last forever. His first ever girlfriend, who was a girl that just moved to the school, was
like the video game princess to him. He fell in love with her, but she never reciprocated his love. She

Crvical Cancer Essay
With more than 500,000 new cases being detected each year, cervical cancer is one of the leading
causes of cancer affecting women worldwide.1, 2 A very high burden of cervical cancer mortality is
found in developing countries, where nearly 9 out of 10 cases result in cervical cancer related
mortality among women.3, 4 These healthcare disparities can be largely explained by the lack of
access to effective cervical cancer screening programs in low resource settings, such as Sub Saharan
Africa (SSA), that allow for early detection and treatment.5 African women have an extremely high
incidence of cervical cancer, with approximately 420,000 new cases, half of which die per year.6

Squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL) or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), the HPV mediated

women.20, 21 HIV leads to an increased prevalence of HPV and incidence of CIN in HIV infected
women. This maybe due to immune suppression seen with HIV.22 Moreover, cervical lesions are
twice as likely to progress to high grade cervical intra epithelial neoplasia (HGCIN) in HIV infected
women as compared to HIV negative women.23 This could be due to the inability of the immune
system to clear HPV in advanced precancerous and cancerous lesions.21, 24, 25 However, studies
have found that the rates of invasive cervical cancer (ICC) do not increase with decreasing CD4+
counts.26 Researchers attribute this finding to the long latency period prior to the development of
invasive cervical disease, during which, HIV infected women end up dying of other complications of
their HIV before ICC affects

Workplace Diversity Essay
Corporate America is seeing a shift in workforce demographics, with the terms workplace diversity
being thrown around in meetings across many large organizations. There are many definitions and
interpretations of workplace diversity, but the this paper will define workplace diversity as an
environment that maximizes the potential of all employees by not discriminating against age,
ethnicity, gender, physical abilities/qualities, race, sexual orientation, educational background,
geographic location, income, marital or partner status, military experience, parental status, religious
beliefs, work experience or job classification (Futon). Managers of this era have to work alongside
individuals who not only come from different ages and educational backgrounds, but also individuals
who are of different origins and have roots in many parts of the world. Organizational leaders are
convinced that diversity efforts need to be an organization wide effort in order for it to succeed
(Roosevelt 23). The reality is that the American workforce is changing very rapidly and steps have to
be taken to adapt to this new environment. This paper will focus on (1) the growing importance of
workplace diversity, (2) the benefits associated with having a diversified work environment, (3)
methods of increasing workplace diversity and (4) effective strategies for managing a diverse
workforce.

Moneyball Movie Analysis
The movie Moneyball , released in 2011, contains several negotiations that exhibit techniques we
discussed and practiced in class. To provide brief context, the movie is based on the Oakland Athletics
baseball team. The film begins by showing a 2001 Playoff Series featuring the Athletics playing the
Yankees, and highlights the difference between the salaries each team has. The Yankees boast a salary
of $114 million, whereas the Athletics salary is $39 million. Despite the efforts of the Athletics, they
eventually lose the series. This foreshadows the movie s main plotline that the Athletics suffer from a
lack of funds, making it difficult for them to compete professionally. In the off season, the Athletics
realize that they will not have the payroll to resign their two best players Jason Giambi and Johnny
Damon. This leads to the first major negotiation in the film, between the Athletics scouts and their
General Manager, Billy Beane. Both sides took several weeks to prepare for the major scouting
meeting. The scouts analyzed and watched hundreds of young players, in the hopes that they would
find players to sign. Generally, this is the typical process teams will take to prepare for scouting
meetings like this. The General Manager, Beane, decided that the organization was ignoring the big
picture and needed to change their traditional methodology. He analyzed the organization s situation,
and determined that the team had major constraints. Primarily, these

Pros And Cons Of Stereotyping
The topic pertaining to stereotypes and their kinship with human impulse has been an issue, as well as
a solution to society for a long time. A stereotype can be defined as a regular cognitive process,
usually automatic, that saves time and effort on making decisions about an individual or group
(Devine Monteith, 1999; Operario Fiske, 2001). Stereotyping gives insight about human decision
making abilities, as well as impulsive thoughts and ideas about groups and people. In society they are
seen as a problem, but the question is can we ever truly eliminate them? The solution to such a
question comes from researching to see if stereotypes are hardwired into our brain as a first response
or something that we have control over. Therefore, can the primary impulse, which is stereotypical, be
overcome, or is it out of our control? Stereotyping is acquired throughout an individual s life by
learning from society. This concept is shown by the experiment of Bargh et al. (1996). Bargh created
three groups, and had each of them individually complete word puzzles. The first groups work puzzles
had words that evoked rude feelings, such as bother and disturb. The second group had a word puzzle
with politeness such as courtesy and behaved. The third group had neutral words in their puzzle. When
they were finished the puzzle, they were instructed to find the researcher. However, the researcher was
intentionally in a conversation, which he stayed in for ten minutes. The

On the other hand enemies such as the Space Pirates, Kraid, Ridley and the Mother Brain are
programed to perform a small selection of up, down and side to side to movements with the exception
of some basic skills and animations. Kraid for example, is a muscular, slow moving hybrid with
animations that signify a tank. The spinning claws and projectiles are launched from his back and
stomach area which replicate the barrel of a tank. Ridley is a slim and slippery space dragon which has
the ability to fly and to propel a burst of fireballs. In the original Metroid he is capable of dodging
attacks from Samus with the use of flying. In contrast to this, the Mother Brain displays the animation
of a pulsating mechanical brain with an immense amount of flowing energy without the access of
limbs. This indicates that it has imposing authority. To summarises this, many of the characters in
Metroid have the ability to convey an emotion with the use of different animations. The way they are

In February and March of 2009, there had been some evidence of improvement in financial and
economic conditions. Wholesale inventories were in decline. New home sales were beginning to rise.
The equity market had experienced a rally of over 20% in recent weeks. Yet many money managers

Kneeling to the National Anthem On September 21st, Christine Brennan reported Colin Kaepernick s

portal (www.npr.org). All through the National Football League s preseason matches, Colin
Kaepernick, a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, refused to stand for the national anthem. He
clarified that he took this stance to point out what he sees as wrongdoings against African Americans
and different minorities, especially with regards to certain atrocities in police activities. Kaepernick
has stated he is showing support for the Black Lives Matter movement, which was sparked by a
number of police killing innocent black people. When addressed by journalists after the first occasion
when he did not stand for the national anthem, Kaepernick stated that, he would not show respect or
pride in a flag for a country that continues to oppress African Americans and people of color. He
added that this was much bigger than any game and that it would be selfish on his part to look away.
He also claims that there were bodies lying on the streets and people were getting away with murder. I
don t think Brennan understands why he chose not to stand fully. I think this also could have led to
more attacks from other writers and reporters that have been inform of his true reasoning. I do not

What drives Peter s obsession with gardens? During his narrative, Peter interlaces an approximately

As a result, I originally passed off old Peter s reflections on constructing a garden as merely the

[every] time I was punished I was made to read that passage, as if repeating it would rid me of the
bitterness of my name, my self... it didn t work: I remember the words, but all my bitterness is still
there (page 325). While the constant punishment failed to remove Peter s bitterness and in fact, I think
that it contributed to it, I believe that this mental and physical abuse left Peter with no sense of control
over himself. Furthermore, I see evidence of the effect of this abuse in Peter s detailed description of a
childhood gardening failure. While writing about his childhood home, Peter reflects on this specific
incident, stating that when I began to dig... the earth was hard as bedrock but still I persevered... I dug
until the skin on my palms became thin and raw; a splinter pierced my thumb... I looked at where I
had dug and saw that I had only succeeded in scraping away a thin layer of soil... I remained like this,
crouching and defeated (page 279). Sadly, despite his utmost effort, pain, and perseverance, Peter s
impact is negligible. Furthermore, his lengthy reflection indicates to me that this event holds
considerable significance far beyond the mere frustration of a child.

African American Oppression Between 1865 And 1905
Oppression is a common theme in history. Whether it is based on race or gender the oppressed are
inevitably strengthened by the oppression through commitment and perseverance. African Americans
were one of the most significant examples of oppression in American history. The emancipation of
slavery in 1865 signified the slow fight for freedom and equality for African Americans. Between
1865 and 1905 they suffered extreme oppression, but remained united in their fight to gain
independence.
In 1865 all slaves were emancipated which declared them free, but racism was far from over. In the
South, freed African Americans continued to be killed as an act of racial violence. Between the period
of 1865 1905 African Americans fought to defeat their oppression. By the year 1905, freedmen were
still fighting for the same rights they were fighting for in 1865. African Americans were oppressed in
many regards, a great example of this is the black codes. These codes were written into Louisiana law

Comfortably Neumb Poem Analysis
Are drugs really the answer to anyone s problems? Comfortably Numb, a song, written by Roger

They write about a person who focuses on escaping his own mind because he can t bear what is going
on in the outside world. The band mate retreats to his inner self and is having conflict with the
physical world. Comfortably Numb is a song (in it s generation) that most people, who were having

mate is conclusively depressed. He has lost touch with reality and is trying to be awoken by the

  • 3. Violent Video Games Benefits In 2013, President Obama requested congress to allocate ten million dollars for the research of the effects violent video games pose towards adolescents. Although many studies exist on the impact of video games, few have focused on the benefits. News stations are so quick to spread information on the negative effects that no one has taken into consideration that video games might have positive effects. I believe that taking a balanced perspective is essential to discovering the truth, especially with video games. While true that little research has been devoted to the benefits of video games, it is the opposite for the functions of play. Erikson (1977) thought that children, by simulating different occasions, as well as alternative emotional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is especially true with shooter video games, such as Halo 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV. A 2012 study took naive gamers that rarely or never played shooter games, and randomly assigned them to play either a shooter game or another type of video game. The gamers playing shooter games showed faster and more accurate attention allocation, high spatial resolution in visual processing, and enhanced mental rotation abilities. A meta analysis concluded that these spatial skills improvements are comparable to formal (high school and university level) courses designed to improve these same skills. This same meta analysis found that these spatial skills trained can be trained by video games in a relatively short amount of time and last for an extended period of time. Of course, these skills transfer to other spatial tasks outside of game. Preliminary research has also shown that these cognitive advantages manifest in neural processing and efficiency. An fMRI study found that the areas that control attention allocation were less active during a challenging pattern finding puzzle in gamers than in non gamers, leading the researchers to believe that shooter game players are more efficient in attention allocation and more effective at filtering out unneeded information. Cognitive neuroscientists have begun to send requests to video game companies asking to develope games designed to test hypotheses and the specific mechanisms that provide different cognitive benefits. In addition to spatial skills, some scholars believe that videogames are important in developing problem solving skills. This growth is shown between all genres. The game puzzles range from finding the quickest route from A to B, to using memorization and analytical skills to learn complicated action sequences. Also, game developers often provide very little ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Dumping Subsidy and Trade Disputes Essay Dumping Subsidy and Trade Disputes Too many questions have been asked if dumping implies unfair trade practices. Recently, disputes over dumping make it difficult to decide whether or not we should allow this activity to enter our country. Many of us are equally familiar that more foreign imports mean more jobs are being destroyed in American industries. Because of this particular reason, WTO and GATT members have worked together to see if there is a relationship between dumping and unjust trades. In their study, some have discovered that dumping benefits the economy and helps increase competitions among various industries in the U.S. However, there were also some others who took the opposite side by arguing that dumping is an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, if dumping is introduced, trade may emerge. Each firm will limit the quantity that it sells in its home market, recognizing that if it tries to sell more it will drive down the price on its existing domestic sales. If a firm can sell a little bit in the other market, however, it will add to its profit even if the price is lower than in domestic market, because the negative effect on the price of existing sales will fall on the other firm, not on itself. So each firm has an incentive to raid the other market, selling a few units at a price that is lower than the home market, but still above marginal cost ( krugman p.146). Thus trade between the two countries emerges but in a way that is unclear if it is beneficial to our domestic economy. To explain how dumping affects trade, let s look at its mathematical structure given by Professor Steve Beckman from University of Colorado at Denver. Firms with monopoly power have marginal revenue MR = P + P Q where P is the slope of the demand curve, the change in the price divided by the change in quantity sold dP/dQ . All firms profit maximize by choosing output such that marginal cost equals marginal revenue which is MR=MC=P + P Q. So, the firm s markup over price is P Q = P MC. Monopoly power is commonly defined as (P Q)/P = (P MC)/P or the percentage markup over cost (Beckman). Professor Beckman reasoned that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Rampage of Polio During the twentieth century Americans were afraid. They were afraid of the Russians, they were afraid of the economy, they were afraid of Hitler, and they were afraid of polio. A disease as indiscriminate as a nuclear bomb, it struck young and old, rich and poor, white and black. It caused fear and hysteria, confusion and anger, paralysis, and even death. By this time the United States had endured smallpox, cholera, yellow fever, and tuberculosis; but it had never experienced a wide spread epidemic of a disease that seemed to specifically target children before the twentieth century. Although polio effects people of all ages, children are the most susceptible due to their weak immune systems. Many victims of polio were partially or completely paralyzed, and thousands died. The summer plague would run rampant in the United States for nearly four decades. Before the 1890 s polio was fairly common but largely unknown. The disease was very common in early history due to a lack of sanitation but because many people contracted the disease they developed immunity to that strain at an early age. If the infected persons lived through the early infection they were then immune to that particular strain of polio. This meant that in excess of 90% of some populations were immune, while less than 0.5% were paralyzed due to polio. Evidence has been found of polio in the ancient world. Some scientists believe hieroglyph depictions of people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An effect was imbalance in the industrial sector, factories in America are forced to make things/equipments to support the military. It also caused increase in taxes because the country has lost an enormous amount of money to the war. It had caused 2 millions soldiers who were sent to the war either wounded, missing in action, or dead. Even though America was scarred from the war, Vietnam left the war more affected than America. The American military dropped Agent Orange, which was exposed to 4 million people and 3 million people suffered from it. It has caused people in North Vietnam to migrate in large populations to South Vietnam, tripling the population from 2 million to 8 million. Deadly weapons and equipments are used in the war, which both sides were affected from it: Vietnamese soldiers and the American soldiers. Napalm for example was dropped by the Americans, which burned down the Vietnam s forest, exposing the Vietnamese hiding place, and killing innocent civilians. Booby traps that were made by the Vietnamese caused a lot of American soldier to be wounded or dead. Booby traps like the camouflaging spikes under the leaves, punji pit, rope trap, hidden ropes to set of grenades, shoot off arrows, or even send a log slamming were responsible for many American casualties. • 7. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks Essay Henrietta Lacks is not a common household name, yet in the scientific and medical world it has become one of the most important and talked names of the century. Up until the time that this book was written, very few people knew of Henrietta Lacks and how her cells contributed to modern science, but Rebecca Skloot aimed to change this. Eventually Skloot was able to reach Henrietta s remaining family and through them she was able to tell the story of not only the importance of the HeLa cells but also Henrietta s life. It appears that there is a curvilinear relationship between age and frequency of victimization and according to this study, the worst cyberbullying occurs in middle school. However, despite an expanded variety of options to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, the problem of food insecurity has hardly been addressed. It is a widespread problem on college campuses across the nation. While food insecurity only impacts 14% of households, 48% of college students claim to be food insecure. This problem disproportionately impacts first generation college students, students of color, and students who need financial aid, as noted by the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness. The subedar who is lustful for women, is fascinated by Sonbai, whose husband left the village due to his new job. Sonbai is a woman who works in a spice factory. Rejecting the advances of the subedar, Sonbai is forced to take safety in a pepper factory. I will analyze the use of the spice red chili pepper as it serves as a powerful image in the film. Red chili peppers are used as a metaphor that can be can invoke many meanings. Chili pepper in the movie is used as a symbol of resistance against the patriarchal oppression that the Indian women face in the movie. In the beginning of the film, the director makes a point to show red chili peppers that are grown and are ready to be plucked. Furthermore, a man plucks the chili pepper and shucks it a vase on top of a scarecrows head breaking the vase. This scene symbolizes that women are seen as a hot spice . Shroff s writing about the importance of the scene states This image of the luscious chili, red on the outside, spicy and explosive on the inside, prefigures its role as the chief ingredient in this narrative and emphasizes from the outset its double meaning the sexual power of the women and their ability to use their power to resist oppression within the family and society (249). The chili pepper symbolizes the effect of sexual desires and the portrayal of women. In the film, the subedar gives an obscene offer of sex to Sonbai. She is so offended that she slaps him in the face and flees away. Having [our] participants live in that setting day and night, if prisoners, or work for long eight hour shifts, if guards, would also allow sufficient time for situational norms to develop and patters of social interaction to emerge, change and become crystallized (Zimbardo, 2013). Some other preconditions were to make the experimental setting bear a resemblance as closely to a functional simulation of the psychology of imprisonment as humanly possible. Introduction Literary scholars and critics have often commented upon the structural complexity of John Cheever s short story The Country Husband . For example, George W. Most people believe that metal is all that is needed and that in fact that is all it has. The truth is that it required a lot of research and procedures to come up with the right materials to people to withstand rigorous conditions. In other words, materials had to be engineered to work with extreme heat, cold and pressure changes. Due to some other issues such as collision from debris and unforeseen events the space shuttle had to be cancelled. The risks were too high even with all the engineering of materials. During the 1955 the race to see who would send the first astronaut to space began between the United States and the Soviet Union. At that time, they were using rockets without the thought of being reused. All they really want was to win the race of who would send the first astronaut to space. • 27. Pros And Cons Of Stereotyping The topic pertaining to stereotypes and their kinship with human impulse has been an issue, as well as a solution to society for a long time. A stereotype can be defined as a regular cognitive process, usually automatic, that saves time and effort on making decisions about an individual or group (Devine Monteith, 1999; Operario Fiske, 2001). Stereotyping gives insight about human decision making abilities, as well as impulsive thoughts and ideas about groups and people. In society they are seen as a problem, but the question is can we ever truly eliminate them? The solution to such a question comes from researching to see if stereotypes are hardwired into our brain as a first response or something that we have control over. Therefore, can the primary impulse, which is stereotypical, be overcome, or is it out of our control? Stereotyping is acquired throughout an individual s life by learning from society. On the other hand enemies such as the Space Pirates, Kraid, Ridley and the Mother Brain are programed to perform a small selection of up, down and side to side to movements with the exception of some basic skills and animations. Kraid for example, is a muscular, slow moving hybrid with animations that signify a tank. The spinning claws and projectiles are launched from his back and stomach area which replicate the barrel of a tank. Ridley is a slim and slippery space dragon which has the ability to fly and to propel a burst of fireballs. In the original Metroid he is capable of dodging attacks from Samus with the use of flying. In contrast to this, the Mother Brain displays the animation of a pulsating mechanical brain with an immense amount of flowing energy without the access of limbs. This indicates that it has imposing authority. To summarises this, many of the characters in Metroid have the ability to convey an emotion with the use of different animations. The way they are presented resembles the identity of realistic objects. In conclusion, the art style of Metroid embodies the futuristic and sci fi theory of outer world life. Tom Adams, president and CEO of Rosetta Stone, Inc. (Rosetta Stone), the language learning software company, reached for his iPhone to contact Phil Clough of private equity fund ABS Capital. Adams and Clough had been discussing plans to take Rosetta Stone public for some time. The wait was finally over. With the crisis in full swing, investors had flocked to U.S. Treasuries for security, pushing down yields on these instruments to historic lows (see Exhibit 4). In February and March of 2009, there had been some evidence of improvement in financial and economic conditions. Wholesale inventories were in decline. New home sales were beginning to rise. The equity market had experienced a rally of over 20% in recent weeks. Yet many money managers and analysts worried that such economic green shoots were only a temporary rally in a longer running bear market. There was strong concern that the magnitude of government spending would spur inflation in the U.S. dollar. GDP growth was still negative, corporate bankruptcy rates and unemployment were at historic highs, and many believed the economic void was just too big for a quick recovery to be feasible. A Wall Street Journal survey of U.S. economists suggested that the economy was expected to generate positive growth in the last half of 2009.1 In contrast, a survey of U.S. corporate executives stated that less than a third of respondents expected to see an economic upturn in 2009.2 The ... • 32. Essay On Kneeling And The National Anthem Kneeling to the National Anthem On September 21st, Christine Brennan reported Colin Kaepernick s refusal to stand while the national anthem was being played in National Public Radio s (NPR) online portal (www.npr.org). All through the National Football League s preseason matches, Colin Kaepernick, a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, refused to stand for the national anthem. He clarified that he took this stance to point out what he sees as wrongdoings against African Americans and different minorities, especially with regards to certain atrocities in police activities. Kaepernick has stated he is showing support for the Black Lives Matter movement, which was sparked by a number of police killing innocent black people. When addressed by journalists after the first occasion when he did not stand for the national anthem, Kaepernick stated that, he would not show respect or pride in a flag for a country that continues to oppress African Americans and people of color. He added that this was much bigger than any game and that it would be selfish on his part to look away. He also claims that there were bodies lying on the streets and people were getting away with murder. I don t think Brennan understands why he chose not to stand fully. I think this also could have led to more attacks from other writers and reporters that have been inform of his true reasoning. I do not think he was disrespecting the flag or people that fight for it, but just making a stance to get ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mao had devised a plan; he needed to remove his political rivals as well as high officials in the communist party who were not sufficiently zealous. In a move of pure genius, Mao recruited his most loyal followers: the young people who had grown up under his reign who were eager to stir up trouble, and launched The Cultural Revolution. They were called the Red Guards and they were told to smash up the four olds defined as old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits. Heeding the call, the revolutionary teenagers vandalised and destroyed antiques, paintings, and books, and burned historic buildings and temples to the ground. The Red Guards raided houses and severely beat the people living there, and long hair, jewelry, high heeled shoes, and tight fitting pants were not allowed. Artists, writers, and scholars were abused and attacked under the law for being bourgeois authorities and teachers were punished and even tortured by their students. Analytical Essay Bicycle Safety On Essex Bicycle safety on Essex The following analytical essay will analyze and interpret issues that are interesting, puzzling and controversial in the short story Bicycle Safety on Essex . The essay will mainly deal with issues such as racism and racial prejudice, which are either interesting, puzzling and controversial. First, there s the interesting issue with Cleve. According to Noah, the humiliating event in Essex was not the first time Cleve was questioned by the authorities. This can be seen in the following quote If you fucking assholes arrest him again one more time just because he s black and I m not, I m going to kill myself! . This shows that Noah, at such a young age, knows that Cleve is being detained and questioned by officers based only on his skin color, which in fact can be called racial prejudice. • 35. Peter s Obsession To The Garden What drives Peter s obsession with gardens? During his narrative, Peter interlaces an approximately present day account of his experience in an elderly home attempting to construct a garden with an explanation of his fateful trip to the Seven Maidens. On the surface, I find his story of the elderly home to be inconsequential ostensibly only his gift to Jasper at the end advances the novel s storyline. As a result, I originally passed off old Peter s reflections on constructing a garden as merely the creative outlet of a possibly senile old man. However, Peter s outright passion for gardens invited me to examine his writing in further depth. During Peter s childhood, his teachers subject him to intense beatings while forcing him to quote a personally belittling Biblical passage that targets his very name as poisonous. Indeed, he asserts that [every] time I was punished I was made to read that passage, as if repeating it would rid me of the bitterness of my name, my self... it didn t work: I remember the words, but all my bitterness is still there (page 325). While the constant punishment failed to remove Peter s bitterness and in fact, I think that it contributed to it, I believe that this mental and physical abuse left Peter with no sense of control over himself. Furthermore, I see evidence of the effect of this abuse in Peter s detailed description of a childhood gardening failure. While writing about his childhood home, Peter reflects on this specific incident, stating that when I began to dig... the earth was hard as bedrock but still I persevered... I dug until the skin on my palms became thin and raw; a splinter pierced my thumb... I looked at where I had dug and saw that I had only succeeded in scraping away a thin layer of soil... I remained like this, crouching and defeated (page 279). Sadly, despite his utmost effort, pain, and perseverance, Peter s impact is negligible. Furthermore, his lengthy reflection indicates to me that this event holds considerable significance far beyond the mere frustration of a child. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. African American Oppression Between 1865 And 1905 Oppression is a common theme in history. Whether it is based on race or gender the oppressed are inevitably strengthened by the oppression through commitment and perseverance. African Americans were one of the most significant examples of oppression in American history. The emancipation of slavery in 1865 signified the slow fight for freedom and equality for African Americans. Between 1865 and 1905 they suffered extreme oppression, but remained united in their fight to gain independence. In 1865 all slaves were emancipated which declared them free, but racism was far from over. In the South, freed African Americans continued to be killed as an act of racial violence. Between the period of 1865 1905 African Americans fought to defeat their oppression. By the year 1905, freedmen were still fighting for the same rights they were fighting for in 1865. African Americans were oppressed in many regards, a great example of this is the black codes.
